8:05 pm - Site Update.

darthmollusc
I've spruced up the website over the last week or so. Gave it a little facelift. Broke out Adobe CS and took it for a little spin. Hunted down a bunch of dead links. Check it out:

    http://www.badmoonbooks.ca/

Also I've reestablished some affiliate action; links can be found off the Ottawa Author page. I've hooked up with abebooks.com and chapters.ca. Between the two of them there should not be a book on the planet (either in print or out) that you can't get your hands on. And of course at chapters you can also get movies and music and ipods and candles and all sort of other crap. The folks that are handling the chapters affiliate program are pretty slick and have a utility that allows me to build my own custom affilite links. All the title specific links were custom jobs.

Take a surf on through. If you find anything annoying or amiss feel free to drop me an email at editor@badmoonbooks.ca
If you're the first person to point out something big and embarrassing I'll probably mail you a chapbook.

And if you want to help Bad Moon Books (and maybe you're not interested in buying a chapbook) then make sure if you're buying anything from abebooks.com or chapters.ca that you go through one of the affiliate links first. Here endeth the sales pitch.

Not A Surrender

MORE OF A STRATEGIC WITHDRAWAL - February 25th, 2005

This is not an easy decision for me but it is, I know, the right one. Until further notice I am officially suspending all three Bad Moon Books contests: Blood and Guts, Cold Steel, and New Cat Tattoos. I am not ruling out the possibility of perhaps starting them up again sometime in the future, but right now they are simply not tenable.

What it comes down to is this. I just don't have the time. These contests demand, and indeed deserve, a good deal of attention, and I have very little to spare. I am raising an unpublished novel of my own with a second on the way and that is on top of a full time job. I am finding that I am simply unable to hit deadlines and to me that is unacceptable. As it is I have yet to bring my last contest winner into print ... and while there are many reasons for this none of them excuse the fact that I'm failing to meet my commitments.

So here are my new commitments

• I have not (to the best of my knowledge) cashed any of the cheques for the 2005 Cold Steel Crime and Mystery contest. Any cash or money orders will be refunded.

• Non-disposable manuscripts will be returned.

• I WILL live up to all my commitments to my last three winners as quickly as possible.

• ALL participants of Cold Steel 2005, Blood and Guts 2004, & New Cat Tattoos 2004 will receive free copies of the next three Bad Moon Book publications.

I want to stress here that Bad Moon Books is NOT folding or going out of business. I will continue to publish at my own pace. I am stepping back from my beloved contests not because I don't enjoy them but because I feel that if I am charging an entry fee I need to be a position to hit the deadlines as advertised. I am not in that position and it is time I recognized that.

5:06 pm - Blood & Guts 2004 - and the winner is...

darthmollusc
I always forget how hard the judging of these writing contests can be. After the first couple of rounds of reading I invariably end up with a handful of eclectic stories, that strive for very different ends, using vastly dissimilar means and devices. Comparisons as a result are not simple.

I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in this year's Blood & Guts competition. A venture such as this is only as strong as those you choose to take part. This year nineteen participants (some of whom were carried forward from other BMB contests) provided 26 compelling stories.

( And the winner of the 2004 Blood & Guts Horror Story Contest is...Collapse )

1:32 pm - October!

darthmollusc
Well, it's October and I am back at work (read: the job that pays all my bills). It was a good September. I'm feeling pleased about what I accomplished. This is what's on the plate for this weekend.

• Go over my Blood & Guts finalists (there are six of them) and make a final decision. It's been a VERY strong group this year. The best yet.

• Start the contributor mail outs for Cold Steel & New Cats.

• Get Cold Steel & New Cats to the National Library of Canada.

5:12 pm - Dope & Son

darthmollusc
The two chapbooks (Killer Dope and Prodigal Son) are now both at Staples (Business Depot) being copied. I've done half runs (75 copies) on both of them for now as that's all I can afford to produce. Even a half run of the two chapbooks together is enough copies (2,400) to afford me the best rate. I'll be picking them up tomorrow morning and spending a good portion of my day tomorrow folding and stapling. This all assumes of course that there will be no mix ups at Staples (last time was a bit of a nightmare). I am crossing my fingers.

This means that early next week once I have the financing all worked out I'll be bringing them to the printers. If I have one or both of the minichaps done by then, great. If not I'm not going to hold either of these chaps up any longer than necessary.

No rest for the wicked.

Killer Dope is now all but done.
I'm waiting on a short bio and a pic from the author.

Tomorrow I start on the two minichaps.

10:42 am - Killer Dope

I managed to produce the final masters for Prodigal Son yesterday. I'm quite pleased with the results. I wish I had a postscript printer but there is not a lot I can do about that. The cover turned out very well I think; a subtle photoshop filter can sometimes make all the difference in the world.

this is the FULL cover ie front and back

I'll post a preview of the Killer Dope cover once I hear back from Christian. My plan is to get Killer Dope salted away in the next couple of days and then do a combined printjob on both chapbooks.

Okay, back to work!

The most grievously overdue of the Bad Moon Books projects is now all but done.

2004 Cold Steel Crime and Mystery contest winning chapbook
Prodigal Son by Leo Brent Robillard ISBN 1-896634-17-6
95% done

Tomorrow (with a little luck) I'll be able to straighten away the last few details and move on to the next project.

2:54 pm - Mea Culpa!

darthmollusc
Damn. I am way behind. My apologies to all those waiting on news and or results. The problem with being a one man operation is that you have no one to hand off to.

Two weeks ago my plan was to get all caught up on my Bad Moon Book commitments prior to my vacation (Sept 5-27). The plan is now to come OUT of my vacation all caught up. My plan is to update this blog every couple of days.

• 2004 Cold Steel Crime and Mystery contest winning chapbook
Prodigal Son by Leo Brent Robillard ISBN 1-896634-17-6
Very overdue! 75% done. Top Priority.

• 2004 New Cat Tattoos winning chapbook
Killer Dope by Christian McPherson ISBN 1-896634-18-4
Overdue. High Priority.

• Minichapbook Macabre by Julita Wolanska ISBN 1-896634-19-2

• Untitled Minichapbook by Lacy Lake

• 2004 Blood & Guts Horror Story Competition
Judged, winner selected and announced.
By September 30th.
