Welcome to BARFF! The Boston Area Rotten Film Festival. A Live Journal Community dedicated to the spreading of Bad Movies both online and coming soon to a theatre near you! BARFF is an idea whos time has come! In this journal we will discuss bad movies. You do not need to live in the Boston area. If your local, you may have the oportunity to help bring Bad Movies to Boston. If you just want a place to share your love of cinema cheese online, the more the merrier.
In a nut shell I have several phases and objectives for BARFF:
We are currently in phase 1: Gathering the charter members of BARFF. In other words, the word is out for like-minded lovers of the B-movie. There is a twist - we will make a difference by loving movies that do not make a difference. BARFF will be formed as a non-profit philanthropic and social organization. We will aim to spread the love of bad movies, while raising money for such organizations as food kitchens and the Home for Little Wanderers. Once we have established a member base and determine what role key members will take, phase two will begin: in which we will establish a place in the film/scifi communities of Boston. We will plan Bad Film gatherings at BARFF members' homes or other small venues. These will be movie nights during which bad movies will be watched. Good food will be provided by potluck and we will begin the process of raising the money the group will need to thrive, as well as begin raising money and canned goods for the organizations we will support. By Arisia 2004 and perhaps even sooner, we will establish a tradition at local conventions, a BARFF space on the party floor: A room rented for the weekend by BARFF members which is open for all interested parties to come visit. We will show a wealth of cheesy movies, short films, talk back at the TV and have a blast! Prior to doing a con, we will will need to research which movies are public domain or covered under the umbrella of films within the convention's licensing. Since we will be in a party room, we will not be charging to show these movies. One evening of the convention we will also host a party. Ultimately, the big annual event that we will set up is a film festival. It will be a one day, all day, marathon of bad movie shorts and some surprises. We will need to find a venue for this. We plan on contacting a few of the local colleges. (We have some connections with a few of them.) We will also speak with some of the independent film houses about hosting a big-screen, low-budget, movie fundraiser there. The definition of "bad movie" encompasses a great deal. For the purposes of BARFF it will fit into several categories. It's the movies we love to hate. It's the movies made on a shoe string budget. It's the scripts with the campy, badly written dialog. We will champion the cause of both the classic b-movie and many bad films which we've yet to imagine!
