Hellow! Uhm...no one has posted on here in almost a year x.x...

I'm Lissa, Lissa Jurenka. My real name is Alissa, but srsly if you call me that I'll kill you >_>
Anyways, I'm a flautist. Been playing 3 years, and I lovvvee it. I'm really passionate about music. ^_^ I live in Louisiana, and I'm uberly excited about going. I've been to Michigan before, family and such, but I've never really gone anywhere other than Ludington...So it should be a nice experience =D Me and my friend I met via internet are going to Session 3. We're hopefully going to be in the same cabin... We sent our letters together (I sent mine to her, and she forwarded it to Blue Lake) sooo does anyone know the chances of us -not- being in the same cabin? x.x I was so happy to get accepted lol. Still haven't gotten my information packet thing yet, though. Anyone know when those come in?

Don't be a stranger~

Hello everyone!

I'm not sure if this is allowed or not, but it's relevant, so I figure it'd okay.

A friend of mine is selling a lot of instruments. I mean, a lot of instruments, and of almost every variety. There's woodwinds, brass, strings, and electrionics and recording equipment up for sale. He's a senior music major and takes great care of all of his instruments; I assure you everything is in good repair and condition (he's very good with instruments). So, if any of you are looking to buy something, it's probably on there.

Here's the website that lists everything.

Thanks, everyone!

x-posted everywhere.

Hey there, I have a somewhat difficult question. I really have my heart set on being a counselor at Blue Lake this coming summer. I need to get a job, and I can't imagine one better suited to me; I'm going into music ed, I love connecting with people, and Blue Lake is my second home.

The problem is that I haven't had a year of college yet. I just turned 18 (which is the age requirement) and I'm about to graduate high school.

I am close with three conductors who have spent/spend their summers at Blue Lake, and in talking with one of them, this came up. She told me that as summer approaches, they tend to get desperate if they don't have all the positions filled and might consider applications that don't necessarily meet all the "requirements."

...So a week ago, I e-mailed BLFAC at the "employment" address and asked if they would ever consider an application like this. I haven't gotten a response. I'm starting to think that it's a question they can't really answer definitively.

What do you think? I know this isn't an easy question, but -- has anybody by chance had or heard of a slightly younger counselor? Do you think it would be worth making a tape, asking for recommendations, and sending in an application? Or should I forget it and wait until next year?

And The Results are in. [24 Mar 2007|04:41pm]

Heylo,my lovely friends in Blue.

Well tryouts came up at our school this monday,I was sure I wasn't gonna do well for choir,I made up words and messed up some notes. But I tried out for Theatre too and I did really well,The whole thing was to truly find out what I would got for.
The results were:
Theatre:$400(same as last year)
Choir:$430

So,I'm going for choir,It totally lifted a load off my shoulders.

so my question is to you...
(actually more than one)
How hard is the sighreading you auditon with?
what kind of music do sing?
solos?
Do sopranos hit like...sweeney todd high notes?
and the most basic question ever....

did you have fun?

love y'all
Courtney.

Hey all,

I was just hired as a counselor for this year! All I have to do is accept the job. I'm really excited, but I'm not from Michigan nor have I ever attended Blue Lake. I'm from Virginia and I go to school in South Carolina and I've gone to other arts camps. Oh, and I'm a flutist.

I don't want to step into this blindly, so tell me: Is it worth it? Is it worth living in a cabin for 9 weeks? I can tell you all really LOVE the place and I want to love it too! If you've worked there, what were your best and worst experiences, and is there anything I should know that I wouldn't find out from the interview. What have you gotten out of Blue Lake. If you are a camper tell me what you think too.

Also, do the showers have hot water? :)

Email me if you desire: maryr16 at bellsouth dot net.

Thanks!!
Mary

hey there, blue lakers. [18 Jan 2007|07:44pm]

thechronopolis
hello!

I stumbled upon this after looking through a friend's friend page... and it's pretty awesome...

so, I suppose I should introduce myself [which seems to be almost customary after looking through old entries].  my name's sana, I'm from grosse pointe, and I play the alto and tenor saxophone [but mainly the alto].  I used to play the clarinet... started playing the alto somewhere around three years ago.  I'm currently a sophomore.  I love band.  a friend of mine went there and her talking about blue lake and the international exchange sounded like fun, so here I am.  I'm going second session as a band major.

and I'm pretty excited... !

but ANYWAY... I'm sending in my application in a day or two and I just had this one question that's been bothering me.  I've seen the old entries about electives, but I suppose I'm still a bit skeptical on whether or not I should take one.  I really want to go and have fun and meet new people, but I also really, really want to sharpen my skills a bit.  I was planning on taking jazz band [does it focus on improvisation as much as people say it does?  that's my primary focus apart from normal, per se, band].  if that's not available, then jazz history.

they never really tell you in the tiny booklet that includes the application what a sample day would be like.  you know, when you get up and basically what you do everyday, how much of it is actual practice time, and how detrimental to one's free time an elective would be.  is it that time-consuming?  is the jazz band elective that beneficial, or is it just simple techniques that I could teach myself?  I already know the basics that they describe in the elective description, in terms of styles unique to jazz and whatnot.

AND OH! the masterworks orchestra winds and percussion sounds great... private lessons would be cool.

ahhh... why is summer camp being stressful...

stupid tiny, ambiguous program booklet.

I really appreciate this group and all of the advice that you all tend to lend [unintentional rhyming].

thanks!

I'm feeling blue. [13 Jan 2007|02:33pm]

[ mood | blue ]

Hey y'all in the blue.

I miss camp soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much...I'm going make a tip/packing list thingiefor those new lil' campers....ADD ON.It might be a little girl oriented...but that's what I am.

Stuff I wish I'd brought.
~Febreeze.(Something WILL cause your cabin to smell bad...especially if your a girl)
~Water, bottled or jugs...or plan to go to the healthlodge every morning(don't pass out from dehyradration like me:)
~An alarm  or something...sometimes the counsolers wake you up but you ignore.
~more rubberbands for my hair.
~A foolproff hairsyle that ensures that you don't look like a homeless person by rec time.
~knee highs as opposed to tights for girls, they are so sweaty.

Stuff I am soooo glad I brought.
~Watch.
~rain STUFF
~light PJs
~A light blanket for those hot nights
~my 20 questions ball.
~CDs
~Pins for my shirt.
~jewelery.
~flashlight

TIPS.
~BRING WATER EVERYWHERE!!!! I passed out during a concert from dehyrdation...then had to walk home ALONE in the rain during a full blown thunderstorm from the healthlodge.
~Clean up....no one likes a pig at blue lake.
~make friends with everyone.
~don't stereotype people by thier art or appearence.
~don't put your feet on the back of someone's chair during a concert.
~try to get along with counsolers....they have it hard too.
~REMEMBER YOUR PIN!

Other stuff.
Coming with a buddy-On your form it says  you can send in your app. with a friends and get in thier cabin.Having someone you know in your cabin can be fun,but it can also be a drag.If they are really close to you outside of camp they may be clingy and not leave ya alone(not my case...but i've heard junk) So if you plan on meeting tons of people tyou might not want a cabin buddy.

ELECTIVES-If you don't want any extra free time(besides normal rec time),go for an elective. If you want a good work out,TAKE DANCE....If you want stuff to show for yourself..take art...my friends had a blast.Theatre was like an easier, abridged theatre program so I f ya feel like it,go for it.I have no idea about any of the music ones...except for music appreciation...my friend took it and HATED it.

Food-By the second day of camp,i was almost totally vegetarian, the meat..kinda sucks so alot of things like the cheese ravoli and soy burgers, really rocked...so even if you like meat be a veggie, get you friends to get you meat if you seriosusy NEED IT.

The Dance-don't get worked up,if you get a date, you get a date,DON'T LET IT RUIN YOU DAYS OF CAMP UP UNTIL THAT POINT.Girls...there are 3 girls to every guy at blue lake,so not everyone gets a date.IT'S ARTS CAMP...NOT DATE CAMP!

First day-Some schedules say come at like 2...your audition is a 2:30....come at 12...seriously if you want a top bunk or a special place or whatever...get there early..I came at 12 and I was last in my cabin to get there...my friends said 9...so COME EARLY!

concerts-concerts can be long....and hot..and boring.Try not to sit to close to counsolers during one..therefore maybe you could whisper... AND DON'T GIVE STANDING OvATIONS!!!!EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!unless you like being there all night.

Badge meaning thingies-At camp, everyone gets a badge...it's white for mostly everyone now, counselors have a colored name tag that's different. If you're a vegetarian..it has green sticker it  you've passed the swim test you have blue sticker on the back.If you've been to the international outpost you have a little world sticker on it. Name tag colors are White for first years,Yellow for second.....um and red for 5th...Kaylan's guide has it all so I fyou wanna know 'em all looks at hers.

stuffs for your feets-You'll wanna bring some type of walking shoes.Don't bring toeless or heels and expect to get around campin em,,,I like converse or adidas because they have good wear..you'll also want a pair of flips flops or slippers for  being around your unit...BRING TONS OF SOCKS it get yuck...like YUCK.. just bring about 20+ pairs....you'll thank me later...i promise.

Bottoms-For daily wear you have to wear jeans or a navy blue that's darker than the uniform shirt...I don't think there is a height requiremnt but no one wants to see short shorts... NO ONE!and you have to tuck in you shirt anyway so guys, don't try to leave the cabin in baggy butt-bearing pants...you won't get very far...

Other guides:look on the the memories for more(and better) tips

happy blue laking!

question: are you still eligible for scholarships once in high school?

i am talking the ones that a BL representative would come to the middle schools for and offer. im sure they mainly did it to bring kids in (which it worked on me), but if i were to go to the middle school the day he/she shows, would i be able to get one, even though im in high school?

also, generally when do the camp applications start showing up in mail boxes?

Wikipedia Article [06 Jan 2007|10:58pm]

[ mood | calm ]

Hey guys,

Hope everythings well. Been awhile since theres been a post on here. Anyway, I was reading some articles on Wikipedia and for whatever reason thought of Blue Lake. It had a pretty sad article before, but someone must've gone in and added a few things, and now its actually pretty full of useful information.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Lake_Fine_Arts_Camp

Nothing that most of us don't know, but this could be a good reference. Also, since its Wikipedia, any of us can edit it to add more information and links. This could prove useful to make it a good article, although I have to admit its leaps and bounds of what it was before.

Anyway, check it out and post your comments! Hope all is well with everyone and I hope you're all looking forward to another summer. I'll be in the International Jazz Band this year. Anyone have any ideas of what they're doing this year?

Take care everyone.

Counselor next summer? [21 Sep 2006|07:09pm]
kissmybrass88
Hey! I was a BLFAC attendee for Session 2 in 2003 and Session 3 in 2004. I played my French horn in the Symphony Band my first year and in the Symphony and Concert Orchestras my second year (heck yes 1st chair). Anywho, I made it into the IYSO for their 2005 tour, but I didn't end up going because I felt like getting off my butt and finally marching drum corps. The past two summers I marched mellophone with Magic (2005) and Spirit (2006). This year I may take a year off from marching if I don't make it into this one corps I absolutely love. A friend got me thinking...I could come back and be a Blue Lake Counselor next summer :-) This will probably be my only year not marching until I age out (2010). I'm currently a freshman music ed. major at Florida State University.

Has anyone else here ever been a counselor before? Would I stand a good chance getting hired? I'd love to do it for the experience as a teacher. I plan on teaching high school after I graduate.

I was accepted to play in the international youth symphony orchestra for 2007. My dad lost the letter in the mail, and I JUST found it today. I worked really hard to get into the program too. The letter said that someone would contact me by phone, but no one did. And the letter said that they would replace me if I didn't reply back by August 22nd. Is it still possible for me to play? I worked REALLY hard to get into the program too..and I would hate to see me not get reaccepted because NO ONE contacted me. =/

Deposit & the aftermath (cross-post) [21 Aug 2006|03:28pm]

link00seven
Note: I also posted this in the BLFAC International Community.

Hello,

So I got my acceptance letter for the BLFAC International Jazz Band (w00t), and I am pretty happy about that. I have a question regarding payments after the deposit...if I can somehow wiggle $750 by Aug. 31...which I still don't know how I'm going to pull that one off, but anyway...if I am able to make the initial deposit, do you have to pay a set monthly fee for so many months, or can you take your time and pay it however you want over the course of the few months until its all due (which I believe is April or May). If I don't have to make monthly payments to BLFAC, it'll give me more time to come up with the rest of the money throughout whatever means neccisary.

Thanks for the help! You might see more of me asking questions...heh.
