Series Editor Role and Responsibilities

Role

When the Books@Atla Open Press Editorial Board accepts a proposal to establish a scholarly monograph series, a Series Editor is named from information provided in the proposal. The Series Editor provides vision and direction for the series under the guidance of the Editorial Board. The Series Editor works in tandem with the Editorial Board Liaison, who works directly with authors (or volume editors in the case of multi-author works) once a book proposal is accepted. Should the Series Editor vacate the role in a continuing monograph series, the Editorial Board will appoint a new individual to fill the role. 

Responsibilities

• Work with the Editorial Board to recruit book proposals for the scholarly monograph series, attending quarterly Editorial Board meetings when appropriate
• Review book proposals for the series alongside the Editorial Board
• Complete the proposal review form provided in OMP
• Meet with the Editorial Board to arrive at a decision
• Advise in selection of a volume editor, if needed
• For multi-author works, help draft the call for proposals
• Review chapter proposals alongside the volume editor
• Correspond with Volume Editor and Editorial Board liaison to recommend acceptance, substantial revisions, or rejection
• Advise Volume Editor and Editorial Board regarding developmental editing recommendations when needed
• Monitor the volume discussion boards and support the Volume Editor and chapter authors as necessary
• Participate in the cover design process
• Monograph series will have a single cover design template that is established with the first volume of the series
• Subsequent volumes will likely not need series editor involvement in the cover design process
• Participate in the Editorial Board’s review of page proofs
• Prepare a draft announcement of publication in collaboration with the volume editor and editorial board liaison
