megandjim: Hanson is NOT just for teenaged girls. (and gay guys)

I know nobody has posted here in awhile and you all probably don't like Hanson but I want you to download this stuff anyway. I'm going to see Hanson in concert tomorrow and I'm so pumped I can barely contain myself, and I'm not one to be outwardly excited that often. These are a few choice Hanson cuts of mine just to show you they've grown up and they're WAY more than just MMMBop (although, the brilliance of that song is lost in the chorus) I hope these songs will at least give you an appreciation for Hanson, if not make you a fan. (even if you choose to remain in the Hanson closet):

If Only, This Time Around 2000. John Popper from Blues Traveler guests on harmonica. Brilliance!

This Time Around, This Time Around 2000. This was the first Single from the album. They're "comeback" hit, although, as far as I'm concerned, they never left.

A Song To Sing, This Time Around 2000. This song makes me cry. Hanson is amazing with angsty introspective ballads. If you don't download anything else, download this song.

Strong Enough to Break, Underneath 2004. Oooh guitars. They're "second comeback" album, opening track.

Penny and Me, Underneath 2004. The perfect summer song for joyriding at the beach. Trust me.

When You're Gone, Underneath 2004. This is one of the tracks that I always repeat once it's over. It's really sad and beautiful. There's even a Jesus reference, which usually pisses me off, but it doesn't here.

Crazy Beautiful, Underneath 2004. I just love this one. They've got a good brass section playing with them on this one and it's just awesome.

Okay, now for Middle of Nowhere. Yes, it's the MMMBop record, but it's so much more. I'll give you a couple tracks of there that I think are brilliant and I'll throw in an MMMBop for good measure. It blows me away that these kids wrote all these songs themselves, especially at 11, 14, and 16.

Weird, Middle of Nowhere 1997. I love this song, I also loved the video. You don't stand out, but you don't fit in. Who doesn't feel a little bit weird sometimes?

Look At You, Middle Of Nowhere 1997. A song about feeling alienated at some sort of dance, and a hot girl, and dancing. Oh Taylor, how I love thee.

A Minute Without You, Middle Of Nowhere 1997. An Isaac song. He has such a smooth voice and I love him so much.

Madeline, Middle Of Nowhere 1997. Another song about some girl that doesn't exist. I love it! The beat is amazing. Here we go around again....

With You In Your Dreams, Middle Of Nowhere 1997. A song about dying but living on through memories of loved ones. These kids are deep, seriously. Also, gotta love that whole gospel choir thing they got going on during the chorus. This song is awesome live.

MMMBop, Middle Of Nowhere 1997. Yep here it is, a song about all kinds of relationships and how they fade over time, and how you should treasure your loved ones and all people can do is sing the damn chorus. I love how people react when I tell them I'm going to see Hanson... "Oooh MMMBop, heh." Dude, that was almost 10 years ago! Get over yourself and check them out already!! You're missing some good stuff!

In closing, I spent a lot of time putting this together for you all so the least you could do is give them a listen. Please? Pleeeease?

aivilo_18: Dude!

Okay, so it's been a while since someone posted a theme so I'm gonna go ahead and post one now...

Seeing as it's that time of year again where shows are starting premiere, I'm gonna go ahead and make this week's (month's? :)) theme about television. It's a lot like our very first theme, which was songs that make you think about SVU. Only broader. Any show. Any pairing. Any single character. Even if the show isn't airing anymore. What. Ever.

What are your favourite shows and what songs make you think about them or their characters?

Go.

aivilo_18: Songs that make you go...[thud]

Okay, so I'm gonna go ahead and take some initiative here because I need some new tunes on my MP3 player. The other stuff is getting old and my MP3 player is the only thing saving me from shooting myself at work these days because factory labour really is *that* depressing.

Anyway, baby_sis mentioned love songs as a possible theme so I'm gonna build on that. Post the love songs (or any song, for that matter) that has you reaching for the nearest warm, breathing, living body.

That's right people. This week's theme is...

Songs That Make You Go...[thud].

I'm expecting some hotness here people! Hotness!

Happy Song Hunting!

P.S. I'll shoot, on sight, anyone that posts "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye. That's *mine*, Bitches!

megandjim: Cover Songs!

Love's In Need Of Love Today - Joan Osborne (originally by Stevie Wonder)
I love Joan Osborne so much it hurts. I love this cover too. In fact, I just love this song. Love is in need of love today. I couldn't find my Joan CD so I just downloaded this off iTunes. I'm not sure if it will work if you don't have iTunes but you can try anyway. I hope it works!

When The Stars Go Blue - The Corrs and Bono (originally by Ryan Adams)
The Corrs are an amazing band and while their own songs kick ass, they've also done quite a few covers. I love this one because OMGBONOYAY! Andrea's voice is just so sweet I could listen to it all day, and I have. I believe this song made me cry the first time I heard it.

Ruby Tuesday - The Corrs feat. Ron Wood (originally by The Rolling Stones)
Yay! The Rolling Stones! I love how The Corrs can make pretty much any song sound adorable.

Everybody Hurts - The Corrs (originally by R.E.M.)
This song definitely made me cry the first time I heard it. It still does. This is off their Unplugged CD/DVD. It's a good show. Rent it if you can. Aside from being genetically perfect The Corrs are also incredibly talented. I'd whine about how unfair it is but I enjoy them far too much.

Ahh The Commitments, where do I begin? The Commitments is a movie from the 90's about a 10 piece irish band of working class people that play soul songs from the 60's. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it. All the actors really played and sang and the lead singer Andrew Strong has the most amazing voice. I believe he was only 16 when he made this movie. Anyway, the whole soundtrack is basically awesome covers. I'll just put a few of my favorites here...

Chain Of Fools - Angeline Ball, Maria Doyle (originally by Aretha Franklin)
I Can't Stand The Rain - Angeline Ball (originally by Ann Peebles)
Try A Little Tenderness - Andrew Strong (originally by Otis Redding) The build up is amazing
I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) - Maria Doyle (originally by Aretha Franklin)

Wild Horses - The Sundays (originally by The Rolling Stones)
What can I say that hasn't been said already? And yes, I got it off my Buffy soundtrack. Man Buffy used to be great. I miss the days when it was just about killing the undead.

Paint It Black - Vanessa Carlton (originally by The Rolling Stones)
While this may not be an awesome cover (I love it) I do appreciate the fact that Vanessa didn't change the lyrics to make it gender specific ::COUGHCOUGHBRITNEYSPEARSCOUGH::

Emotion - Destiny's Child (originally by the Bee Gees)
This is a gorgeous song but I cannot stand it when the Bee Gees sing it so I was happy that Destiny's Child did a remake. Destiny's Child is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Dirty Laundry - Lisa Marie Presley (originally by Don Henley)
I love Lisa Marie Presley. I love everything about her. Dude, she touched my monkey. This song is so her. I love the message in it too. Also, I love it when she sings "we got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie" because that's hot. (she is totally bisexual, I just know it)

Oy! Sorry, that was a lot of songs!

A little late yes I know but I have been busy so forgive me.

Soundtrack Music

Woo Hoo - The 5 6 7 8's Kill Bill Vol. 1
It's one of those songs you can't get out of your head for a few days... Also, what's not to love about The 5 6 7 8's? They're an all girl japanese surf-rock band! I wish they're CD had more than6 songs on it. I really like the one "I walk like Jayne Mansfield" that they performed on the DVD extras.

Goodnight Moon - Shivaree Kill Bill Vol. 2
I really don't know why I like this song so much. There's just something about it... It's kinda sexy and once I hear it I have to repeat it a few times before listening to something else.

Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon - Urge Overkill Pulp Fiction
Yes, I realize these are all Tarantino films but he's The Man so you're just going to have to deal. I love how in the movie, when Uma is dancing and singing along to this song, she sings, "Girl, you'll be a woman soon. Soon you'll need a womannnn." Heee I love you Uma Thurman.

Flowers on the Wall - The Statler Brothers Pulp Fiction
This song it actually my own personal theme song. I hear it in my head when I'm walking down the street and I squee with delight when it comes up on my iPod Shuffle. It's an anthem for any loner with ADD.

This Poem Sucks - Mike Myers ...So I Married An Axe Murderer
I think this is actually my favorite Mike Myers movie. My favorite line... "I'm afraid you're going to k.... leave me." "That I'm going to cleave you?? What does that mean Charlie?" "No no LEAVE me." Nancy Travis... Mmmmmm.

I'm Super - Big Gay Al South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
I'm Super!! Thanks for asking! All things considered I couldn't be better I must say. I'm Super! No nothing bugs me. Everything is super when you're..don't you think I look cute in this hat?

Uncle Fucka - Terrence & Phillip South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
Because, why not?

Eyes of a Child - Michael McDonald South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
It seems like a nice inspirational song about the innocence of children but listen to the lyrics....

Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me - Susan Sarandon Rocky Horror Picture Show
Had to throw this one in there. Because I love Rocky Horror and I love Susan Sarandon. Damnit, Janet, I love love love love you.

I'll post my cover songs tomorrow sometime.

kelbelle: Soundtrack songs....

Right, so I easily could've had 25 songs for this, but I cut out (almost all) of the showtunes. Can we put that in the hopper for a future exchange?

You Can't Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones --from The Big Chill and more recently House.

As the philosopher Jagger once said, "You can't always get what you want." - House

Then, later...

I looked up that philosopher Jagger you mentioned, and it turns out, that if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you need. - Dr. Lisa Cuddy (his boss)

Ooh La La - The Faces off the Rushmore soundtrack. Ask softeranswer, she'll tell you this is one of my very favorite songs. It makes me ridiculously happy. They also have used it in a Volkswagon commercial and more recently in the NIKE commercials with babyTiger at the British Open...I wish that I knew what I know now...when I was younger...

Vertigogo (Opening Theme) and Sentimental Journey both by Combustible Edison on the Four Rooms soundtrack. I love this ENTIRE soundtrack, but these are my two favorite tracks. The "Sentimental Journey" especially. It's the whistleing. (sp?)

Love Is In The Air - John Paul Young from Strictly Ballroom This is Baz Luhrman before he went completely and totally balls-out crazy.

Love Is All Around (Mary Tyler Moore Theme) - Joan Jett a shortened version, but from the awesome, awesome black comedy Drop Dead Gorgeous If you have seen Allison Janney playing trailerfabulous White Trash...well, then you just haven't lived.

all right, fine...three showtunes...

At the Ballet - Carole Bishop et al from A Chorus Line Carole Bishop is really Kelly Bishop of Gilmore Girls fame. I had the chance to meet her this past spring and she was lovely enough to sign my CD insert. She's a classy, classy lady with a strong set of pipes and dancer's legs that I'd kill for.

Guys and Dolls - J.K. Simmons and Walter Bobbie from the 1992 Guys and Dolls revival, Vern Schillinger sings! (And he's pretty damned good!)

Luck Be A Lady - Peter Gallagher. Also from the 1992 Guys and Dolls revival, Sandy Cohen Peter Gallagher proves he can belt them out with the best of them. He's a fantastic Sky Masterson. I could've put any of his songs up here.

Some of these are mp3's and some are m4a's, but both lostingeekdom and baby_sis assured me that they'd be playable on WMP or Quicktime....

Enjoy!

sravenk: Week #5: Soundtracks

lostingeekdom: Roadtrip songs

Roadtrip songs .. and as I've just come back from one .. I guess it's not too hard to come up with some numbers. So here are my choices. Its a bit bollywood heavy this time, and I couldn't find one of the songs that I wanted to put in .. but might try and put it in later today.

1. Dil Chahata Hai
From the movie of the same name. Its all about long roadtrips and the joys of friendship... hoyay much? I love the music video of the song, as it showcases the beautiful western coast of India.

2. Chaiyya Chaiyya
From the movie 'Dil Se'. Another Rahman classic. And singing on trains is love. Kinda reminds me of all the long train trips I went on up and down India. The part I loved best was opening the compartment door, holdinng on to the sidebars and leaning out when the train in going at full speed. Fucking awesome!
Jinke Sar Ho Ishq Ki Chaaon
(who ever has the shade of love on their head)
Paaon Ke Neeche Jannat Hogi
(will feel like they are walking in heaven)
Sare Ishq Ki Chaon Chal Chhaiyaan Chhaiyaan
(le'ts all walk towards the shade of love)

3. Roop Tera Mastana
This song is a classic, From the movie 'Aradhana', released in 1969. Actually, this song is about some serious UST, and giving into the temptation. An instant classic, this is one song that is guaranteed to come up in singalongs on roadtrips. Must be all that repressed sensuality that makes us want to belt it out all the time.

4. Riders On The Storm
Perfect song to listen to on dark empty roads in the dead of the night. And Jim Morrison's voice .. mmm hmmm.

5. Chicku Pukku Raile
This is a Tamil song. One of the early Rahman works (can you tell that I'm obsessed with it :-)). Dancing on the trains ... again. We indians have a unique relationship with our railways. Love to hate it and bitch and moan about it, but we can't live without it. Its the lifeline that has been connecting the nation.. and flirting on the trains are always fun ;-)
