12:08 am - Graduation
chswrestling264 Well Senior Finals are history. I am really coming to the realization that we are going to be gone in less then a month. after 4 years of working towards graduation it is finally here. This, a time where you want to spend as much time as possible with friends before you all separate into your own colleges. Sure, you say that you are going to keep in touch but how many of those actually last. If you can keep up High School friendships awesome. But back to the main point. Central was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I saw everybody with their ups and downs and i had mine. All the drama, the fun, the good days, and the bad. I saw the strength in people rise when they overcame things. I saw people collapse under the pressure of grades. Friends come and go, leave the school, people talk about suicide. It just goes to show how it takes all of your friends to help you overcome these obstacles.

In closing, this goes out to 265,266,267, and 268. If you ever feel that you are going to break, find a friend that you can talk to and do just that. Talk it out. Don't do anything stupid like killing yourself. Keep the reputation of this fine school in tact. Remember also that many men and women have walked the halls and were proud to be a part of CHS history. You may walk into a bank or supermarket and see a CHS t-shirt and find one of the people you met freshmen year. You may find that the old guy in the corner of the nursing home that never talks under any circumstance went to CHS and when you tell him this, he talks with you for hours. Always cherish the days you walked the halls of Central. You will miss them.

Chuck C.~264~Always on top.

7:57 pm - Whhhhhhhhy do the gods of finance hate me?

Before I rant, to all the people still at CHS, especially the seniors, here's a heads up: There is a scholarship available called the James Hughs Memorial Scholarship. The only requirements are that you graduate from a Phila. public High school and go on to a Pa. State unveristy. Other than that, it's an essay (which any CHSer can rock) and a reccomendation from a non-family member (which any CHSer can also probably rock). It's worth 1,500 per year, good for about four years. And yes, it is the scholarship mentioned below in my rant...but whatever. I don't think this kind of thing happens a lot. So don't let my situation discourage you. But this is ot there.

Okay, so I should be studying, but because I cannot afford to be this stressed out over something relatively small, I am about to vent. Big time. Beware, you've been warned.

WHAT the FUCK??? Why is it that even when I work hard for something, I still get screwed over, huh? God, I can’t stand this. And I seriously usually hate writing entries like this, where is all bitch, bitch, bitch, and not realizing what I do have, blah, blah, blah. Okay, I do realize that in this big freaking college scheme, I am luckier than many people financially. I also realize that other people are way luckier than I. But still, not even looking at other people, because really you shouldn’t compare yourself to other people, I’m like wtf mate? I just can’t believe this. So, the situation? Waaaay back in senior year, I applied for a scholarship. All you have to do is write an essay, get a recommendation or two, and send in the application. And graduate from a Philadelphia public high school (that was my plan) and go on to attend a Pennsylvania State University (also part of my plan, though I wasn’t sure which if the two universities I was going to decide on). So I think, great, a scholarship that I’m actually eligible for and might possibly win, yay! So I applied. Then, I waited.
And waited.
And waited.
And waited.
I never heard back anything about the scholarship, which I applied for through Cal U. I was still torn between which school to go to, Cal U, or Millersville. Cal U was a bit cheaper, nicer dorms, and it had the scholarship. I leaned towards it for a long time. But when I didn’t hear back about the scholarship, I rethought my college decisions, and ended up picking Millersville.
Fast forward to November. I’m home for the weekend on business, a funeral, when I get the mail, and find a letter for me. Wow. State Rep, very official looking. Open it; it’s a letter inviting me to a reception for recipients for the scholarship I had applied to before I even graduated Central. ???!!!??? Whaaaat? I couldn’t even remember how much the thing was worth.
So I do some research. Turns out, I did win the thing, that’s worth 1,500 per year, but they awarded it to me at Cal U. Somehow though, someone just never let me know. And now, I’m being told the money can’t transfer, it has to stay within the university!
!! Why does it matter? I mean, to some extent, I can see wanting to spread it equally among the state schools, but they goofed. They messed up, and I’m out a total of 6,000 over the period of four years?!? !! Come on! I’m just like arrrrrrgh. I’m not even so much pissed off as just upset or sad. There’s no box to check on the FAFSA that says “My Dad screwed my family’s finances so bad in years past that it’s still affecting me and it’s not like my mom makes enough to take care of this by herself because my dad still can’t afford to help me out.” And I am so not being racial here, but it can be very hard to get scholarships and grants when you're "middle class" and there's nothing special about you. It’s so unfair…for once I thought my white “middle class” self finally caught a bit of help here, a bit of a much appreciated break. But no. Noooooo, nonononono. No. And my mom can’t keep doing this. I have no more savings, I have nothing else. My mom has got nothing more to give, physically, mentally, or financially. I fucking let her down again. God. I hate this so, so much. She works so hard, gives all that she can, and more, to my brother and I, and I fuck it up. I don’t even know what I did this time, ugh.

I’m trying so hard to take this well, and so far today I haven’t done a very good job. But then, I only found out today. So yeah, I feel better after just writing this entry. So sorry to anyone that had the displeasure of reading it. But I warned ye! Lol. :-)

P.S.-Go Central! I saw that! Way to grind NEHS into their pansy astroturf on homecoming! The horse is ours again!!

5:23 am - Incessant Philosophical Ramblings...

pammydepengin
(Not completely sure why I'm posting this to the CHS log, but I figured hey, why not, chs is filled with random ass crazies such as myself...fitting, seeing as that was my high school...lol, it's past 5am, cut me some slack. This is def. the 3rd night I've stayed up this late...early...whatever. But I'll sure as hell be impressed if there's any comphrensible thoughts in this entry...)
"Hey, girl ... I was just thinking ...
Where the fuck did 8 years go? Mr.s Rothermel and Sharp, the SAM room, the fucking MG room (Mrs. Petty ... ) and even the lunch room with its $1 bags of Laffy Taffy ... and absolutely terrifying free tater tots ...
Where is my shining pre-pubescent purity, damn it?
And what the fuck happened to my country?"
So the above comment that the lovely Amy left for me got me thinking. In my weird state of mind (Combine lack of sleep, caffeine, partaking in some choice beverage, not really feeling the effects of said beverage, officially being unable to feels any kind of effects from the beverage, getting some weird/bad news, seeing someone I haven’t seen in a while (unrelated to the weird/bad news), not being able to sleep, feeling as though I'm not in control of ANYTHING and that a lot of stuff is falling apart, and having the weird urge that I should be doing something other than sleeping thus me wandering around the campus aimlessly in the freezing cold at about 2 or 3am and you've got my general mood this evening. Morning. Whatever.
So I realized a lot of things tonight/this morning. I realized again that I miss Central in many ways. I realized again that it turned into home and that it was the right place for me. I would so not be who I am today without it. I now understand why the alums that can give so much money do...it's the best way they can think of to give back to the school. It's a concept that I could comprehend before, but now I actually understand it...because there really is a difference between the two.
I'm realizing that I like it here, a realization I've been having since orientation, maybe even the first open house I attended when I was in my junior year at chs. I've become more aware of what I do and do not like about my university. I've come to realize how I've been getting along with and interacting with the people here, as well as how they react to me. The fact that college is more or less everything I expected it to be is somewhat disappointing, because what I expected it to be and what I hoped it to be are two somewhat different things. And I don't know what to do about that. I suppose that all I can do is just work through it. There's really nothing else for me to do anyway.
I think I'm realizing, too, like many other first year college students that just because we've moved away, the things at home still affect us. I thought that being more removed from the stress that plagued me when I lived at home would improve my general outlook on things. To some extent, I was right. And because I factored in the fact that I would be living in a residence hall and that that in and of itself has it's own kind of stressors, that didn't hit me too hard, or take me by much surprise. However, it somehow didn't occur to me that the "at home stress" would find its way back to me here. Sure, it's more removed, which can dull some of the stress/pain. But it's more acute in other ways, especially for someone with a personality such as mine. Now when something major happens to my family, I'm not there to help them deal, or watch over them and make sure they're okay. This is the hard part: while I'm less stressed because the stressor isn't directly hitting me, I can become stressed because I know it's hitting my family and there's not a thing I can do about it, even if it's merely just being there to listen or comfort them. The same thing goes for the friends who stayed local, and even the friends who went away to school, near or far. It's hard to be so removed from the lives of people you care about.
I miss the "pre-pubescent purity" that Amy spoke of in her comment. I know the feeling. However, I also now understand the true meaning of the phrase "you can't go home again." At one time, I thought it to be a dumb statement. If you can't go home, where can you go? I've come to realize over the years that there are different kinds of home. There's my actual house, my neighborhood and city, my schools (Jane Munn, then Shawmont, then Central, now Millersville), my friends and family...anything that serves as a comfort zone. Well, as I said at orientation for college, the only thing truly constant in life is change and that it will happen...there is no such thing as control, because control is a way of keeping change in check...the one and only thing people can control is how they react to the one true constant: change. This is why one can never go home again. It will always be changed. You may find what you're looking for when you go there, but other times you may not. This is why you can never go home again. It will always be changed from what it once was, whether or not you're right there with it. It may even be something as simple as a physical thing, like walking down the halls of your elementary school, realizing that they are no longer cavernous and huge, as they once seemed. It is all just a matter of perspective.
To be honest, perspective scares the living daylights out of me sometimes. I never really was a very naive person about most things; even as a young girl I was usually pretty mature/smart for my age. I generally preferred to take it straight up and get the truth, even if it's harsh, rather than live with my head in the clouds, not having a clue about what's going on and staying happy. I never really was much of a fan of the "ignorance is bliss" philosophy. I even wished sometimes I was, because I knew how much easier life would be in so many ways. Yet I preferred the facts. Now I realize how easy everything was in elementary school, largely because I have bigger things to compare it with. I remember my mom always telling me "Pam it's not the end of the world...there are much worse things to have to deal with...you'll look back one day and it will all seem silly and trivial." I remember understanding that this was all true, yet still responding with "I know that what you're saying is true...but since I have nothing to personally compare this with, it does seem like the end of the world, because right now my world is so small that this more or less IS my world." I remember thinking these thoughts over and over in all the different stages of my life. Now I've gotten to the point where I'm 18; I'm a legal adult, I voted in this crazy election, and I can do just about everything but drink alcohol. And on some level I realize that our worlds are ever-changing, but somehow I still wonder what I can experience to make my problems of today seem smaller. This is what scares me. But I suppose maybe some concerns will stay relatively the same and not become dwarfed by others, such as politics and world affairs, while others will, in time and with experience, be proved trivial, at least in the long run of things.
Just remember...never, much like forever, is a promise...and you can't afford to lie. Change is the only constant, which eliminates all forms of control except for one: how you react to the world's only constant: change. That's the key to happiness. That's the key to love, and the key to home and perspective. That's the key to life.

Advice to current CHSers that are currently checking out colleges:
People say the upside to sharing bathrooms is that you don't have to clean them because the university does. Well, I'm here to tell you, if they're even clean, great, that's a plus. But a minus? A broken heater that the university said it would fix like 3 days ago and never has, that sets off the fire alarms. Yeah, so my only thought was "You're shitting me, right? Fuck no." I'll leave you all with this bit of anger:

"FIRE DRILLS CAN KISS MY SORRY HALF-SHOWERED ASS!!!"****

Thanks you guys,
~Pamela, 263

****Disclaimer: Always leave. No matter how pissed off you are. Or wet, as it were. But always leave. Because if I hadn't, and the firefighters had come in to check the room, I'd be getting a huge fine. And that's the best case secenario. Worst? You die. In flames. Not pleasent. So always leave.
