Up until now I haven't considered posting about it, though. But this one made me pause. Link in case the embed doesn't work. I can't help but notice it specifically targets Catholics.
We've seen this before. And we all know how that turned out.
Link in case the embed doesn't work. Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea?
Those of you who thought that maybe he was celebrating solving all of our economic, socioeconomic, crime and infrastructure woes and was moving on to more frivolous legislation will be disappointed. Nope. All that boring stuff was pushed aside in favor of "emergency legislation" forcing women seeking abortions to have government-mandated sonograms (in addition to the medically mandated ones they already would get) and allowing college students to carry guns on campus.
Source.
I have no real opinions on this and am just watching, along with much of the rest of the world, to see what happens.
Oh, for those of you who are also from the US of A following events in Egypt, please be aware that anything you perceive as anti-American isn't about you. There's something else at play here and the US is a convenient scapegoat. Even among a revolution, politics are still in play.
*facepalm*
Please tell me I don't have to link to it. It's just too...breathtakingly painful. The thought that she mulled over it, probably editing and re-editing, for days makes it even worse.
Please, for the love of God, do not run for President. I promise, you'll make more money on the "speaking" circuit.
ETA (~5pm, locally): some Jewish groups have responded. Simon Greer of Jewish Funds for Justice wins, imo, with this:
"We are deeply disturbed by Fox News commentator Sarah Palin's decision to characterize as a 'blood libel' the criticism directed at her following the terrorist attack in Tucson. The term 'blood libel' is not a synonym for 'false accusation.' It refers to a specific falsehood perpetuated by Christians about Jews for centuries, a falsehood that motivated a good deal of anti-Jewish violence and discrimination. Unless someone has been accusing Ms. Palin of killing Christian babies and making matzoh from their blood, her use of the term is totally out-of-line. [...]
"Ms. Palin clearly took some time to reflect before putting out her statement today. Despite that time, her primary conclusion was that she is the victim and Rep. Giffords is the perpetrator. As a powerful rhetorical advocate for personal responsibility, Ms. Palin has failed to live up to her own standards with this statement."
[emphasis mine]
Oh, and the timing is absolutely perfect. Right after all those Tea Partiers voted people into office those same people are going to cut their benefits. Will they still chant about personal responsibility and an end to "Obamacare" when they no longer receive SS or medicare? HuffPo has a link to an August article where the GOP pandered to the grey haired set by saying SS and Medicare are doing just fine. Beautiful. Let's see what happens to the unemployment rate after sending all of our retirees back to work.
Norman Goldman's take on this.
Paul Krugman's take on it.
Lord help me I agree with both of them.
Ezra Klein has a further more detailed explanation of what today's announcement/report means. And shows in very clear numbers that much of the pain will be felt after the current crop of politicians is out of office.
Not a single damned person I voted for made it into office. And I'm grumpy about it. So, yea, I have every right to complain about where we're all heading in this handbasket.
ETA: Wait...what is this? Someone's starting to talk about ending the occupation of Afghanistan in political and fiscal terms. Let's hope it goes further than just some guy's article submission to an online newspaper. Of course I also have my own selfish reasons for wanting all of my friends over there to come home sooner rather than later.
From the same author: a call out on cissexism in the feminist community. I'll admit I've been trying to wrap my head around the concepts of cis vs trans involved in the spectrum of gender. Therefore I've been looking for sources to attempt to...I don't know...understand in order to not be a complete jackass when challenged by any biases I may or may not have. You know it helps to be able to identify what something is before being able to identify and perhaps correct a bias. The more research I do, the more I think that people can't be classified because they happen to go into so many boxes that the concept of putting them in one category or another loses meaning and perhaps an attempt at it is futile.
Same author on pseudoallies and Liberal Points. Very interesting food for thought rant.
On that note, I'm not exactly sure what a hipster is. I keep hearing the term and think "yuppie" but people keep correcting me. And, yes, I googled and wikipedia'd the definition. But I'm pretty sure that at present I couldn't pick one out in a lineup.
My analysis is far less elegant.
Poll: Public school curriculum should be left to educators, from the Houston Chronicle. And Texans want reform to state board of education, from the Texas Tribune. Same topic, slightly different reporting.
The Tribune article is fairly straightforward in reporting the poll results. The Chronicle tried to report "all sides of the argument" and ended up with this little piece of hilarity (to which I actually LOL'd): "If public school curriculum were left to Texas Freedom Network and their hand-picked list of academics and bureaucrats, we would have censorship in our science classroom and Christmas and Rosh Hashanah would have been cut out of our social studies teaching, while other religious holidays are taught...." Oh the irony! THEY are crying about censorship in science and social studies???? Not to mention the irony of an attorney being unable to say his main talking point with correct English to the Press while discussing education.
"Live steady. Don't fuck around. Give anything weird a wide berth - including people. It's not worth it."
So far the book chronicles everything I remember from Washington, DC "back in a day." My how things have changed...at least as far as safety in the city is concerned. Politics is still....well, you all know.
