I should be working on my [livejournal.com profile] ficfinishing goal fics, but instead I'm trying to vid a documentary. IDEK. Sometimes I feel like I'm doing the whole vidding thing wrong, all of it, and my brain is made of coleslaw -- unlikely, since I no longer eat cabbage or other brassicas, and you are what you eat, yadda yadda. Other times I think, well, I'm making it up, but at least I occasionally finish something.

The documentary is Inside Job, which is about the financial crisis. I've finished clipping, so I have about 20 min of mostly static shots, which is fine. But I'm not sure yet whether I can make it hang together, and when I started, I was toying with the idea of incorporating external source (not something I've done before) by using the Wall St episode of White Collar.

Advantages: some dynamic footage and a nice metaphor (the whole boxing thing)

Disadvantages: that would need to be a critique of the show/episode too (in that they go after an individual as if years of rampant systemic abuses and fraudulent behaviour are less important than a few guys insider trading) and might dilute the point of the thing. It's not like I'm trying to be particularly highbrow about it -- it's really just a venting vid -- but I want to be as respectful as I can, because so many people got hurt and are still hurting/getting hurt.

Also, using WC footage would introduce fictional faces into a non-fiction vid. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that, without some marker to identify them.

And, really, I don't know if I could make it work. My confidence is at a low ebb.

If I were more dedicated, I could seek out Capitalism: A Love Story and cannibalise that for clips, but yeah. IDK. Different aesthetics. Effort required. I really should be writing my goal fics.

Or maybe I could intercut some wildlife documentary footage. Ha! Except no. See above re effort required and coleslaw brain.

*returns to futzing with existing clips to see what I can come up with*

If there's some text or voice commentary that sets up the WC footage as a fictional analogy, as another way of explaining things so people can get it easier, that might allow it to be used nicely. Something simple could work, something like, "Here's our story guys, X, Y, and Z. We just made them up. Now, imagine if these guys were insider trading..."
On some of the political vids shooting around, I'm seeing plenty of outrageous or exaggerated things used to help explain, too, so the general public as an audience is pretty sophisticated.
Every time you use one of those bits, you ID it as such--that'll tend to cut down on how quick or how often you can use it, but it does allow bigger chunks to be used.

I know you don't want to know anything about the actors so disregard and delete and all that if this isn't helpful, but Tim DeKay did make a PSA for the FBI and mortgage fraud in which he introduces himself and whatnot, so that could be used to sort of set up the premise for the WC bits?

IDK... just a thought...

Haha, yes. I believe he's in wardrobe? Which, makes the PSA super weird, but *shrug* what ya gonna do? :))

A documentary vid sounds really cool.

As for adding White Collar footage, you could set it off with a border and have a bottom banner saying "From 'White Collar'" or something similar. Besides that Wall Street episode there were scenes in other eps that illustrate fraud nicely.

I don't know about the optics of it, but other shows also referenced the crash.

Would video clips of Occupy Wall Street protests fit in and make the vid more "active"?
