1. I bounced off the new Connie Willis, The Road to Roswell.
Grumbling. Mostly thematic spoilers. Minor reference to Some Desperate Glory. It continues Willis's theme of communication fail, which okay, fine, I could have dealt with that. But a) the POV character was someone who gave equal weight to "I'm being abducted by an alien" and "I'm missing my friend's wedding." There was no sense of existential "whaaaaat, aliens exist?! the universe is not what I thought!" crisis. b) Despite the alien being completely non-humanoid and not even having a face, everyone refers to it as "he". This bugged me so much, especially after Some Desperate Glory addressed the confusing personhood of aliens so well. c) I just didn't like anyone.

I really enjoyed Willis's earlier work. Bellwether was a revelation for me. But I haven't kept up with her more recent stuff and yeah, this one just feels like it's not in conversation with modern sci-fi or, really, anything much.

2. I've watched a few more episodes of Kdrama No Gain, No Love, and
glee re representation (spoilers)in one of the recent episodes, a supporting character, who I was already primed to love because she's played by Joo Min Kyung, is revealed to be poly. Her long-term boyfriend is seen dating another woman, and her foster sisters assume he's cheating, and she tells them, no, she knows and is fine with it. That they have a polyamorous relationship. When she tells her sisters, one of them, Hae-young, is shocked, but they talk it through and Hae-young eventually realises her disapproval is really societally constructed concern and then she comes around. It was great! (The poly character is marriage-hesitant, too, which I also appreciate a lot.)

3. We watched Making Waves, a documentary about movie sound: dialogue, effects (SFX, foley, ambience), and music. I enjoyed it very much. (I'd seen it in a film festival some years ago, and recently borrowed the DVD from my sister.) The creativity! The impact of A Star is Born and Star Wars! The ordinary lived-in faces of sound designers and engineers! It's such an amazing set of creative skills, all these people who can look at footage, read the emotion, and then figure out how to reflect or heighten or manipulate it with sound. So cool. :-)

  1. Chromecast/Prime keeps recommending me LotR:RotK like this:

Summary: Humans & creatures unite to battle Sauron & his army

Yup, everyone who isn't human is lumped together under "creatures". I'm outraged every time I see it, which is often. (Andrew thinks it might as well read "Nerd stuff.") (Sorry for the blurry photo; I had a cat on my knee.)

  2. I saw this graffiti in town a while ago, and it made me go awww. :D

    Graffiti photo

  3. Last week I watched The Idea of You, a romcom starring Ann Hathaway and Henry from Red, White & Royal Blue (*is too lazy to look up the actor's name*), about a 40yo divorcee and a 24yo boyband member, and it was super swoony, lovely energy. Early on, there were a few inevitable points of mild embarrassment/friction where I had to stop watching and do other things, but I quickly came back for more. And since then, I've been dipping into it, to the point where I'm horribly earwormed by all the in-universe, objectively... adequate? boyband songs, help! Apparently my brief fling with popslash back in the day has made me susceptible.

The film overall hits one of my narrative kinks: mature women being romanced by adoring younger love interests. Noona romances ftw!

  4. My parents and sister have vetoed prawns and asked for tofu instead. Hmph.
china_shop: Close-up of Zhao Yunlan grinning (Default)
We went to Past Lives, and I loved it. It's the story of a Korean American woman reconnecting with her Korean-Korean childhood friend. (Andrew enjoyed it, but found it a little slow.) Really interesting look at being an immigrant, selfhood, how we are defined by our contexts, the road not taken. ♥

Just finished watching: Justified: City Primeval and The Dragon Prince season 3. (I feel like TDP is moving away from what I loved about it, but so long as they're having fun...)

Reading: The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee (in audio), and Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding (in audio). (The latter strikes me as a bit male-gaze-y, but I'm trying to stick with it.)

Linkdump, because I desperately need to close some tabs.

I've been so out of it this week. I don't know if it's the jabs (covid booster and flu vax) or the end of daylight savings, but omg. As well as being an hour early for Zeb's three-weekly vet appointment on Thursday, yesterday I jumped at a chance to see Broker (Korean film) at the cinema, since its run is nearly over. We went to a matinee, and about halfway through something in the language must have pinged my brain because I suddenly remembered I'd arranged to meet my language exchange friend over Zoom. And being in a movie, I couldn't just turn on my phone and message her. So I spent the second half of the film a bit distracted by my mental facepalming. (The film was still good, though.) (And the language exchange thing worked out -- we met today instead.)

Hopefully I'll be more onto it in the coming week! I have lots to do. *g*

(That "lots" includes: cleaning, rewatch post, finish a fic for the current FFW round, start my 520 fic, Korean study, keep up the exercise. And I need to do some relaxation, too. It seems silly to put "breathe" on my to-do list, but there you go.)

china_shop: Jung Hae In's beautiful smile (Kdrama - Woo Tak beautiful)
We went to see Puss in Boots: The Last Wish on Friday, which was fun but I would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't been over-hyped by its rottentomatoes rating. ;-p And I've now watched the first half of Semantic Error (Korean BL drama). Not my preferred get-together dynamic, but it's engaging and the leads are very pretty. \o?

Anyway, I'm mostly posting because I spent this morning writing a tiny fanfic in very basic Korean. I'm really enjoying reading the Korean graded reader I got out of the library, and it made me want to try writing some very simple Korean fanfic in case other learners would like to try reading, too. (Disclaimer: I tried to make this ~super~ simple, but I'm not a good judge of how hard it is. Also, I'm not Korean, obviously, and I didn't get it proofread. So it might be all wrong! /o\)

( Tiny fanfic about Han Woo Tak from While You Were Sleeping. )
china_shop: colourful stick figure drawing of a girl on a bicycle (bike)
Somehow I'm not managing to keep up with Dreamwidth, idek. Good thing I'm not on any of those busier platforms!

Anyway, some things that have happened recently, a list.
  • The Shen Xi fic I posted this morning is my 800th work on AO3! Not bad for 18 years in fandom! (A lot of them are very short, of course, and there are one or two duplicates I can't remove because different people kudosed/commented on each version. Or maybe you can remove those now, and they bundle all the stats together? Idk!) Anyway, hooray me! That means the cake I had at lunchtime was celebratory cake, and not just "we earned cake by doing the trivia quiz" cake. :D

  • I had my bike serviced, and now the gears don't stick when I go uphill, which is amazing.

  • Yesterday afternoon, when I walked home in the rain from dropping my bike off, I wore my new yellow industrial earmuffs with speakers inside, and it made listening to podcasts in town so much more pleasant. I didn't have to turn up the volume to be heard over the traffic! :D (I was also wearing an N95 mask, sunglasses, and a cap; I probably looked like a terminator.)

  • I've spent two weeks failing at buying new sandals, and now the ones I want are on sale, so all that faffing has paid off.

  • We watched Speed on DVD, and the opening titles are lolariously 90s and super boring. We've also recently watched While You Were Sleeping and Romancing the Stone. (Blame The Lost City.)

  • Wow, it's been a long time since I did a "weekly" update post, huh? I should get on that.

  • Also, I still have that free ex-rental copy of the Hugh Dillon movie, Down to the Bone, if anyone wants it. :D
china_shop: Close-up of Zhao Yunlan grinning (Default)
Writing: so, my auction fic is 40k plus, and it turns out its two plots don't really go together at all... until they come together at the end. So I have to fix one of them to be thematically relevant, right? Somehow? (I think that would be easier than splitting them into two different stories?)

I made an outline from my draft, but it's mostly a list of events. I should probably have included character-arc stuff, but all of that is implicit, and I'm not very good at abstracting it from the story. Anyway, now I'm staring at the outline going, "I kind of know what's wrong (progress!), but I still have no idea how to fix it." Maybe I should rewatch some of the Ellen Brock writing videos...

In the meantime, I've been noodling other things to keep the writing gears oiled, but I can't work on other SW/ZYL stuff because that would be confusing, so I wrote another CSZ/GCC prompt ficlet, currently at beta, and I've started the next Shen Xi thing, which is trying to take over my brain... *beats it back with sticks*

Idk. I feel very unfocused and at the mercy of external tides. (Mostly because I made Poor Life Decisions and stayed up super late two nights in a row, plus I've been eating lots of sugary things lately, which always makes my brain less than optimal. If I make the opposite decisions, I'll be struck with brilliance and insight, right?1)

1 Oh, wait, I'm also reducing my Prednisone. Only verrrry slowly, but still, that's probably not helping either.

ION, I'm hosting Write Every Day for the second half of November, jsyk. \o/ (It's currently over at [personal profile] sanguinity's place.)

IOON, we watched The Lost City last night (Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe), and it was very silly and slight. I don't know how it got such a good RottenTomatoes rating.
china_shop: Close-up of Zhao Yunlan grinning (Default)
I have been terrible at posting, and my media update draft keeps getting longer and longer as I watch and listen to more and more things. I also have about four polls to review by now... Have a list instead.
  1. Been going to daytime movies:
    1. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, a UK/US production in which Emma Thomspon plays a widowed ex-religious studies teacher who hires a gorgeous twenty-something sex worker (Daryl McCormack). It was very good.
    2. Muru (Aotearoa NZ) a Māori-made film inspired by the 2007 police/counter-terrorism raid on the remote Māori community of Ngāi Tūhoe. Excellently made, and I greatly appreciated seeing events from that perspective, because yikes. /o\
    3. Bros (US), a gay romcom, which was really fun. I mean, I have thoughts, but none of them detract from the joy of queer people being unapologetically themselves.

  2. I hate algorithms. On the rare occasions I venture onto social media sites, I end up using bookmarks because it's the only way to find things again. On Twitter, this means I bookmark cute animal vids so I can show them to my partner and then delete them: this results in Twitter showing me almost exclusively cute animal vids, which is not the primary reason I go to Twitter, okay? Give me back my race, queer, neuro-divergent, and local politics! And on Instagram I bookmark things so I can find them again, but I don't actually know how to access my bookmarks, lol. /I am so old, I don't care, I hardly ever look at Insta these days and mostly use it as a messaging site anyway

  3. I've been listening to so much fansplaining podcast! And not in any methodical or organised way. Anyway, the femslash episode, combined with this post on [community profile] fictional_fans, reminded me of a little informal Due South challenge that [personal profile] misspamela ran on LiveJournal when I first arrived in fandom -- Get Frannie Laid. And it made me wonder about running a "Get Zhu Hong Laid" challenge in Guardian, maybe in January? Like, very low-key. (Get Zhu Hong laid. That's it. That's the challenge.) Anyone interested?

  4. It's November here, so I should set some writing goals. I'm not doing Yuletide, and I'm not doing NaNo. My goal for November is to make significant progress on my auction fic rewrite: NaNo levels of rewriting. Plus maybe a few more prompt ficlets, if [personal profile] mergatrude is kind enough to prompt me, but mostly the auction fic. I really want to get it done, and it's such a mess.

  5. Stopping now, because I have to go exercise, and if I leave this as a draft, it will be just one more unfinished post lurking in Semagic. Hai! Hope you're all doing well. Proper update to follow at some point!
china_shop: A beautiful warm curlicued cartoon heart in pinks and reds and yellows (heart - warm)
Despite beautiful weather yesterday, the boy and I spent the afternoon at my sister's place with the blinds shut, watching the New Zealand International Film Festival animation for kids programmes -- the one for kids aged 4+ and the one for kids aged 8+. (NZIFF is offering a mix of in-cinema and streaming this year.) The 4+ ones were my favourites, and when we were done I persuaded the others to rewatch my top three:

  • The Last Day of Autumn | Le dernier jour d'automne
A group of forest animals secretly collects parts from abandoned bicycles, with the intention of constructing vehicles adapted to their size. They are preparing for a great race. The Last Day of Autumn race. [Trailer]

I loved this! It was quiet and funny, and all the animals helped each other to make it to the finish line. <3 <3 <3

  • Du Iz Tak
As a tiny sprout unfurls, two damselflies peer at it in wonder. "Du iz tak?" one asks the other, in the private and mysterious language of the insects. This film offers a microcosmic view of the unstoppable cycle of life. [Trailer]

The animation was gorgeous, and the characters beautifully realised, but mostly I adored the language. Scrivendally gladdenboot! I may have to get the picture book this is based on. <3 <3 <3

  • Un lynx dans la ville | A Lynx In The Town
A curious lynx, attracted by the neighboring city lights, leaves the forest behind. The animal has a lot of fun in the city, until it falls asleep in the middle of a parking lot. In the early morning, the amazed inhabitants discover this strange animal covered in snow. [Trailer]

    Funny, expressive and satisfyingly recognisably cat-like. <3 <3 <3

Reading
Listening to Blue Remembered Earth by Alastair Reynolds (read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith), and starting to get into it.

Kdramas
The Light in Your Eyes -- four episodes to go, still no idea what the game plan might be. J said after yesterday's watching, "Stuff happens. Occasionally. That's almost the same as plot." (We're now fast-forwarding through the dreadful brother's subplot, so the show is on notice, but we'll almost certainly finish if only to find out what the point of it all was.)

My Fellow Citizens -- tons happens all the time! It feels like a show where the writers have a plan, and I appreciate that greatly! Also the tension between love and secrets is particularly RTMI these days. (*koff*Guardian*koff*)

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo -- made me cry last night. Bok Joo! *cuddles her forever* (I whole-heartedly recommend this show with one caveat: there is a lot of focus on bodyweight, the deliberate gaining, maintaining and losing thereof, and the main guy keeps calling Bok Joo "Chubs" without realising how hurtful it is.)

I made some Bok Joo icons for [community profile] fan_flashworks' Decoration challenge.

Other TV
There seems to be a genre of half-hour shows where the whole point (and the comedy) derives from how incredibly messed up the main character is. Is this new? Have I slept through this until now? Am I forgetting previous examples? (Oh, wait! Russian Doll would fall into this category, wouldn't it? And Crazy Ex-Girlfriend?) Anyway, we've watched a few more episodes of Fleabag (case in point), and two or three episodes of Upright, which is an Australian show starring Tim Minchin as a guy who finds a teenage girl (Milly Alcock) and loses his anti-anxiety medication while towing his piano across (or around?) Australia. It's good and, jsyk, very sweary.

Also episodes of His Dark Materials, Los Espookys, Agony (UK, 1979, starring Maureen Lipman).

Guardian/Fandom
Mostly just writing. Occasionally I stumble over a canon scene I've forgotten and fall in love all over again, and then wonder why on earth I haven't properly rewatched the whole show yet. /dork

(This week's such scene is from the Reunion Festival dinner (ep 20), ( Not really spoilery; just super-cute. Some small pics. )

Films
I Lost My Body (animation) on DVD. The story of a severed hand traversing Paris(?) in search of the body it belonged to. This is a pretty tragic story (it reminded me a little of Samba), but also whimsical and nicely animated. There was one scene I had to cover my eyes for, and the ending was... well, according to wikipedia, it's a bittersweet/happy-ish ending, but I thought it was more ambiguous than that.

Writing/making things
I'm nearly 5k words into time travel fic #7 and still in the set-up. It was going to be 13 chapters long (I have a sort of outline!), but if chapter 1 is any indication, that would bring it in at 65k words, which I seriously DNW! Anyway, I keep tossing up whether to set it aside and have another go at a Yuletide treat while there's still time, or whether to continue riding the thin, slippery forward momentum I currently have. It's not as easy a decision as it should be.

I'm also last-minute considering making icons for the Guardian Character Icon Battle, but that closes in the next couple of days, and I... haven't started. Or signed up. So who knows? Who really knows? (Smart money says it won't happen.)

Life/health/mental state things
Things are okay-ish? I reduced my Prednisone for a couple of days but then thought better of it and went back up to 10mg. Feeling a bit of unnecessary time pressure re the writing. (Self, the whole point of not signing up for exchanges was to reduce stress! Dork!) Haven't resumed meditating, though I really really should. Haircut this afternoon. Epic dentist appointment this Saturday. Everything is all "I just want to get a completed draft of this story and then I'll [calm down/take a break/fix my health/decide that the next story is equally urgent]." Idk. I'm just a bit off-balance or out of kilter or something. Finding it hard to comment on other people's journals. This too shall pass.

Good things
We went to Zealandia (wildlife sanctuary) on Saturday and saw 15 tuatara (which is like managing to find Wally on fifteen different pages, if the whole page was dirt and sticks, and Wally was dirt-and-stick-coloured) as well as a variety of birdlife. Bought a thin strand of USB-rechargeable fairylights, which I've tangled up and put in a coffee jar for bath mood-lighting -- though at present it doesn't get dark enough in the early evenings to be necessary. Received an adorable slothy Christmas card from [personal profile] talitha78. <3 <3 <3

There are fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries in my fridge.

Reading
The boy and I have 24 minutes left in Not Forgetting the Whale by John Ironmonger, ( and I have very spoilery things to say about it. ) Next up in audio, probably the first of Charlie Stross' Laundry Files books, because we bought it a while back.

Meanwhile, I'm nearing the end of Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch trilogy (and I've already bought Provenance, which I haven't read before, because I'm not ready to stop listening to Adjoa Andoh's wonderful performance). The third book frequently makes me laugh out loud -- and I find it especially satisfying that the humour has a plot-relevant purpose. Also, further to my feelings about my Seivarden feels, ( I had more thoughts. Cut for length and spoilers. )

I finished Take Off Your Pants!: Outline Your Books for Faster, Better Writing by Libbie Hawker, and while I don't think I'll adopt the methodology wholesale, it had some things that are useful to think about, which are informing (improving?) my current fic series.

Kdramas
Watched a smidge more Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, and a couple more episodes of My Fellow Citizens. Both are good.

Other TV
More Rosehaven, new episodes of The Good Place (this season isn't working as well for me, but I have faith), waiting impatiently for more Stumptown, still have a few eps of Los Espookys to go. And on Pru's rec, we've ploughed through half of the Netflix series Living With Yourself (Paul Judd, Aisling Bea), which is creepy and great and I strongly recommend giving it a go, but I don't want to say anything spoilery because I really enjoyed being surprised by it.

Guardian/Fandom
I spent the weekend talking myself into signing up for Yuletide, and Monday talking myself out of it again. ( Cut for length. Apparently I have lots of words today. )

In other news, there's two and a half weeks left in Guardian fandom bingo. Note to self!

In other other news, my brother and sister came over on Sunday, and my brother told me how to pronounce ji, xi, qi, zhi, shi, chi, zi, ci -- and yes, I've been saying them incorrectly all this time. I'm happy to know better, even if I keep forgetting. :-)

Films
We went to Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit. I enjoyed it, and I think it achieved what it sets out to do, but I don't feel qualified to recommend it, and regardless, any rec should come with serious content warnings: ( content warnings )

Writing/making things
Everybody wants to rule save the world! The Lin Jing time travel fic is back from beta and needs one more pass, and I made good progress on the Zhu Hong one yesterday. This week has been pleasingly productive so far. My to-write list is ridiculous (I love it!).

Yesterday afternoon I sat in a cafe for an hour and scrawled out nine pages of notes for (basically a zero draft of) the Zhu Hong fic, and it's taken a lot of the manic-energy-bordering-on-stress out of writing it. I should do that more often! Note to self.

Life/health/mental state things
The bath plan is in place! My neighbour is booked to come over and extract it from my bathroom in a couple of weeks. Two days later, the movers will take it away, and ten days after that, they'll bring it back, all shiny and renewed (barring unforeseen holdups at the other end), and my neighbour will put it back. *fingers crossed that it all works out* And then I can have baths again!!!

Not only have I been camping out at the right-hand end of my browser tabs for the last few weeks, but now my camp is growing in a worryingly out-of-control way.

I am old and cranky, and I wish twitter would put labels on its stupid navigation bar so I can find things.

Still reducing Prednisone (am back down to 20mg). Not sleeping well. Fizzy and tired. Sore throat as of last night. Knees have gone weird (possibly due to steroid reduction). Otherwise fine.

Good things
Strawberry season. The outdoor heated public pool opened on Saturday, and I've already swum there three times. Sunshine. Writing. Timezones aligning. Phone calls. Cats. TV. The Guardian ensemble. Dreamwidth. Discovering (via [profile] rruthlessly) that a moment was a medieval unit of time (1/40th of a solar hour, so 90 seconds on average) -- which is much longer than I mean when I say, for example, "He froze for a moment, his hand outstretched."

Thanks so much to everyone who left such great, thoughtful comments on my update post! ♥ ♥ ♥ I've spent all day intending to go back and reply, but it was a good writing day and I couldn't resist taking advantage of the momentum. A delightful lunch with [personal profile] arysteia and another Short Film Festival session soaked up all my non-writing time. I'll get there ASAP (which at this stage probably means tomorrow)!

Today's SFF session was called Freaky Futures and included: ( I mean, spoilers? )

Yesterday's SFF session was called My Generation and included: ( Other spoilers... )

Just had to get those down before I forgot. *waves and scampers back to ficcing*

[*] The boy's response to my saying the subject line was, "That's a bummer, because that's where we're going!"
china_shop: Close-up of Zhao Yunlan grinning (Default)
...is that they just sit there, each item bought in a fit of fondness or nostalgia, and some of them really have not aged well.

Years ago, the boy read an essay which made the case that Four Weddings and a Funeral was really a tragedy, because Charles ends up with Carrie, the one who messes him around, and not Fiona, who knows him and loves him well. This still comes up in conversation occasionally, and I thought about it again on Friday, when my sister came over to babysit me, and we watched The Thing Called Love (Samantha Mathis, River Phoenix, Sandra Bullock, Dermot Mulroney). I used to like The Thing Called Love a lot -- I like films with singing, and leading women with attitude, and people trying to achieve their dreams. But this time I found it almost painful to watch: the main couple are both messed up, they're cruel when they fight, and there isn't any hopeful sense that their relationship might offer healing or even respite from their scars. I came away convinced they'd be happier apart. (Otoh, four days later, I'm still earwormed by snatches of the songs.)

Anyway, then we tried to watch What's Eating Gilbert Grape, which I remember liking for Juliette Lewis. I was hoping Johnny Depp would be young enough in it that he wouldn't squick me, but it was unwatchable for a number of reasons. We only got about half an hour in.

Now I'm wondering how many films of the eighties and nineties were unintentional tragedies, and I'm eyeing my DVD collection askance, wondering what else is lurking there, waiting to disappoint.

Reading
Book 2 of Sarah Rees Brennan's Lynburn Legacy, Untold, which should be subtitled Book 2: Epic Communication Fail. Thankfully, I'm now past the worst of the ECF, I think.

Kdramas
Are You Human Too? episode 2, which was melodramatic and felt really long, but still fun. Will be interesting to see where it goes. Descendants of the Sun tomorrow night.

I'm saving new episodes of Rookie Historian, Goo Hae-ryung for my post-op recovery. (No spoilers, please.)

Other TV
Another episode of Funny As (documentary series about NZ comedy) and a few episodes of Rosehaven. Weirdly little TV, in fact.

I have one [community profile] 15kisses ficlet to rewrite (it fits the current FFW challenge, so there's a deadline; beta feedback largely boils down to "add more feelings!"), one at beta, and an idea for a fourth. (The first one is already posted.)

Kissing ficlets are pretty much all I have the brain for atm. Also, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan kisses are the BEST!!

Life/health/mental state things

Good things

Oh My Venus! took a weird turn last night. ( Spoilers for eps 13 and 14. ) Anyway, now it's not clear what the final two episodes are going to be about. There are a few loose ends, but not two hours' worth! Guess we'll find out next week.

Descendants of the Sun -- last week was the episode with the ( spoiler ).

I've run out of Rookie Historian, Goo Hae-ryung. Whyyyy did I think it was a good idea to watch something that's currently airing? (I'm not 100% convinced the writers know what they're doing, but it's fun so far. I'm pleased that Hae-ryung isn't the only new female historian and all four of them get to help each other and be a team.)

Other TV
Finished Santa Clarita Diet. Still watching season 2 of Mrs. Maisel.

Guardian/Fandom
I keep writing comments and not clicking Post, and they sit in browser tabs for a day or two, and then the moment has passed. Or I whittle them down to nothing before I post them. Much like this paragraph. Lurkerdom 1; me 0.

Experiments in managing my Dreamwidth experience
Not clear if it's working, or just making me tense and skittery about llamas. ;-p

Also, I'm either going to have to navigate FoxReplace's awkward user interface to install it on my phone (sync my Firefox? nooo! I have 63 tabs open on my desktop on a good day!) or stop reading Dreamwidth on my phone, because I currently have no protections in place there, which undermines everything else.

Films
I watched my first Transformers movie over the weekend: Bumblebee. It hit every beat of the "young person has to hide their secret/magical pet/friend" genre, and I enjoyed those aspects very much. The character design was excellent: Bumblebee was such a woobie! Hailee whatserface was great, and Memo, the love interest, was adorable (barring a couple of tiny ugh moments near the end that I'm choosing to blame on the scriptwriters). Loved the 80s soundtrack. Didn't care about the robot war parts at all, and pretty much ignored those. ( Some questions. )

Writing/making things
Apparently flashfics are a hard habit to break: I've posted one for this round (we sing to set the world to rights, team karaoke fic) and have another one on the go, which I might conceivably finish in time. I just posted my second [community profile] smallfandomfest fic, Answer to a Dream, Shen Wei sexual fantasy fic (for which I got stuck in can't-find-a-title hell and resorted to searching iTunes, eventually settling on the above before realising it's from the Sodom and Gomorrah OST. At which point I laughed a lot and chose not to credit it because it would have set the wrong tone. ;-P)

(The boy is a soundtrack geek and doesn't have a computer, so my iTunes is fullllll of soundtrack music. Some of the tracks have great titles.)

Currently in progress: second Shower flashfic, next episode-related fic (in the Taking It Slow series), that Yarn flashfic I was stuck on last week, and a handful of longer WIPs I haven't looked at in a while. I feel terribly unfocused.

Life/health/mental state things
Ughhhhhhhhh! Everything is hard. Drowning in overdue administrivia and Things I Should Plan/Organise. The new bath is not going to happen before the op. I am tense/oogie and need to find a way to tell my body to chill out.

Have halted steroid reduction due to physical blahs. :-(

Good things
Hugs, writing, cats, sleep, cups of tea, the boy, cranky Shen Wei, insightful Zhao Yunlan, TEEEEAAAM, it's a show with canonical cat shapeshifters, you guys!

Question for the reading list
Does anyone know of a plug-in/extension/whatever that a) blacks out or hides any paragraph containing user-specified keywords and phrases, and b) would work on Dreamwidth (and ideally other sites too)? A friend linked me to foxfilter, but that appears to work at a URL level, and last night I looked at killfile something something that works at a user level (and may or may not be Dreamwidth compatible). Neither of those is what I'm after.

A way to filter out certain written content would greatly improve my quality of online life. Surely I'm not the only delicate flower, and someone has invented such a thing?

Reading
A few little bits of Le Ton beau de Marot and a small amount of fanfic. I'm still not in a conducive-to-reading routine or state of mind.

Kdramas
I saw some comments bashing Abyss on asianwiki.com and subsequently gave up on it. I mean, it was entertaining enough to hold my attention, more or less, but I wasn't invested in the pairing or the serial killer plot, and when I started questioning whether I was really enjoying it...

So I'm trying a historical drama (set early 19th century) about the first female historian in the Joseon palace: Rookie Historian, Goo Hae-ryung. I'm only one and a half episodes in, so it's too soon to say if it's just Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Moonlight Drawn by Clouds and [a third fusion historical drama] put into a blender, ie, a cartoon of a cartoon, or if it's actually good. But I like the main character and the chief historian and the crown prince. The leading man is a doof and has yet to win my heart.

J and I have two more weeks of Oh My Venus! (which has just taken a surprising and, in our view, unnecessarily dramatic turn, but I love the leads and their relationship so much I'm willing to roll with it), and then we're going to try Are You Human Too? I've also finally got my hands on Her Private Life, so that'll be on the agenda at some point soon. Park Min Young!

Hopefully Pru and I will resume our Descendants of the Sun (re)watch this week.

Other TV
Watched one more episode of Rosehaven, and then we started The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 2. ( Reaction. ) No spoilers, please!

Two episodes of Santa Clarita Diet to go with J. *mourns its non-renewal*

Guardian/Fandom
I tried to do a hidden gems / author's choice version of the AO3 meme over the weekend and got distracted re-reading a bunch of old CanRPS and ruminating on how I find some pairings easier to write porn for than others. It really helps if there's an edge to the relationship, you know? Some bite and rawness, or unresolvedness. It's not that I don't like porn about my sappier/healthier/more domestic/more reserved pairings; I just find it harder to write. Maybe it's that there's less ambiguity? Less subtext?

My Guardian rewatch hasn't progressed at all this week, and my writing is all over the place too.

Films
On a friend's recommendation, we watched the anime film Liz and the Blue Bird on Youtube. (It was made by the Kyoto animation studio that suffered the terrible arson attack last week.) It's a beautiful, slight film about schoolgirls in love, with an extremely low-affect main character. Lots of emoting with feet.

And we made a good-faith effort to go to the cinema over the weekend to see Yesterday, but it was raining, and when we got there, we were faced with a sign listing all the sold-out sessions (including the one we were aiming for), so we went home again.

Writing/making things
With last weekend's triple drabble, I earned my [community profile] fan_flashworks 36-challenge (one year) streak badge, The Unstoppable!

Fan_Flashworks badge, The Unstoppable.

Phew! I'm now officially giving myself permission to skip challenges here and there, so I can (theoretically) focus on longer fic without interruption (though I do have another Yarn flashfic I should try to finish for the next Amnesty, circumstances permitting). And I have one week to get my second [community profile] smallfandomfest fic done, argh, if only they'd stop talking and fuck already!

Actually my writing in general is a little borked atm. I keep adding small amounts of words to existing random things, or starting new random things, but nothing has momentum and my brain is not delivering the goods. But I applied for a table at [community profile] 15kisses anyway, because there's no time limit or minimum word count, and because KISSES!

I posted two more picspams this week, because Zhao Yunlan. ♥ ♥ ♥

Politics/life/health/mental state things
( Cut for length. )

No doubt all of this would be easier if I wasn't coming off Prednisone.

Good things
Sunshine, cats, making words, biking. The guy in the next lane at the pool who kicked me and then waited at the end of the lane to apologise. (Seriously, made my day!) Fandom. Fandom events like [community profile] 15kisses and [community profile] smallfandomfest that cater to monofannish types. Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan!

Reading
Read a little fic (but it's accumulating on my Kindle far faster than I'm reading it), and listened to a little more Not Forgetting the Whale.

Kdramas
I tried One Spring Night again because I soooo want to love it, but it's slow and depressing, and some of the scenes feel like improv in a drawn-out, "improv is a specialised skill many actors don't actually have" kind of way. So I'm cutting it loose for reals. (Probably.)

Then I clicked on Abyss, in which aliens accidentally kill an unattractive guy, then resurrect him with a glowy orb and apologise, except that his resurrected form "reflects his soul" and is therefore good-looking. They inexplicably give him the orb, which he uses to save his friend/unrequited crush after she's murdered. She comes back less differently pretty and immediately starts trying to solve her own murder. There are some other murders, but the killer isn't targeting women, and the whole thing is cracky and weird, with oodles of identity shenanigans, so I'm enjoying it a lot. My biggest problem with the premise is that the glowy resurrection orb is called "abyss". Why?!?! I guess it sounds cool? (It's transliterated in the Korean.)

There's also this police detective (on the left), who the boy mistook for Zhao Yunlan, to my VOCAL DISBELIEF, WHAT? NO! WHAT MADNESS IS THIS? (I think it's just because he's a scruffy cop with a beard?)

More Oh My Venus this afternoon. No Descendants of the Sun for a few weeks because of scheduling issues. Are You Human Too? is now on Netflix, and I've added it to my list because AI/robots.

Other TV
The boy and I are currently unwilling to commit to anything, but we idly watched episode 1 of Z Nation because it was there. Not gripped, but not ruling out more.

Finished season 2 of Santa Clarita Diet with J. Starting season 3 today.

Guardian/Fandom
Latest episode-related fic is at beta! Maybe I can get through, idk, 10 more minutes of my rewatch now? Until I hit the next scene I have to write about (I already know which one it is, too, oh god *g*). Current ratio is approximately 7k words to 2 minutes of screentime.1 Ahaha. *weeps* The second half of the show is just a blur to me now.

1 This is wildly inaccurate, because there are huge sections I breeze past, but it still makes me laugh.

I'm having moments of feeling out of step with the fannish zeitgeist, but I'm pretty sure a) it's mostly in my head, and b) most people get that sometimes.

Audio entertainment
Final installment of this season of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme.

Films
My sister and I watched Prelude to a Kiss on DVD on Monday, when she was babysitting me after my (very minor) op. It's an old favourite of mine (I own it on VHS!), starring Meg Ryan and Alex Baldwin: she's a communist?socialist? with insomnia; he's pretty dull. They have a whirlwind affair and get married, and then she bodyswaps with an elderly man. Seriously. I love everything about this movie except for Alec Baldwin and the unnecessary voiceover, both of which are... fine. It doesn't matter. It's worth it for Meg Ryan and bodyswaps. (It's not really a comedy, btw? The blurb on the cover says it's hilarious, but it's more a crack-taken-seriously drama.)

I think this is the first time I've watched it where I've been slightly distracted wondering if the hardest part for Meg Ryan was acting being in love with Alec Baldwin.

Totally failing at going to the movies. Maybe this weekend.

Writing/making things
As mentioned above, the latest fic, which consumed my every waking thought for ten days (including a hiccup in the middle where I discovered it wasn't canon compliant and had to rejig everything) is now at beta. I'm two flashworks away from The Unstoppable badge (an uninterrupted year of challenges). As of today, I don't know what I'm working on, but in theory it should either be more ep-related stuff or something for Take the Wheel at [community profile] fan_flashworks. (I set the prompt; you'd think I'd have some idea what I'm going to write? But no!)

I'm collecting concepts for which there isn't a region-neutral term, eg ass/arse/butt, jumper/jersey/sweater, john/can/loo/wizz palace (thank you, Leslie Knope). One of the things about being in a Cdrama fandom is that I feel I should be able to write in NZ English, but I don't want it to be markedly NZ English because that's just going to be distracting, right? The characters aren't going to, idk, talk about whānau and eat chocolate fish and wear jandals. But there are things they do do, like wear jerseys, where I know that using NZ English is going to evoke all the wrong mental pictures for some readers, and I've been writing fanfic in North American English for fifteen years now, so... "sweater"?

Life/health/mental state things
I feel completely back-to-normal but am trying to take it easy. Steroid reduction continues. I don't know what to say here -- so long as I'm writing, I'm good. (Need to take better care of my arms, though!)

Good things
I don't watch a lot of vids, but Bury a Crown by [archiveofourown.org profile] lolachrome (Shen Wei vid from the 520 Exchange) has taken up lodging in my brain. *flail*
The caption on the Guardian screencap in this otherwise serious and concerning article made me laugh out loud. ZYL would so approve!
My bike has had an annoying slow puncture for a couple of weeks, not resolved even by replacing the inner tube. Yesterday I took it in and they found the tiniest little hair-thick spike jammed in the tyre, and pliered it out with some difficulty, and now I don't have to carry my bike pump with me everywhere or allow time for en route air top-ups.

Also, fresh fruit, sisters, the boy, modern medicine, the internet, Guardian, Zhao Yunlan's mouth, Kdramas, friends, people being kind, people being fierce, knowing that even when you feel out of step there's still overlap. <3

Dribs and drabs of this and that.

Kdramas
Still watching Beautiful Gong Shim, which should have been 16 episodes, not 20. (So easy to say with the benefit of hindsight.) The predictable birth-secret plot is stretched thin as gossamer, and I've spent the last week in the "breaking all the relationships for obligatory misunderstandings and angst" stage, which is emphatically not my favourite part, although it is leavened with a ridiculous amount of ridiculousness. (Like the extended post-emergency appendectomy scene where our two not-yet-officially-dating leads were both denying that Gong Shim had audibly farted, because they wanted to spend one more night together in her hospital room, and once she'd passed gas she'd be discharged. Ah, romance!) Anyway, I'm optimistic it will end well, but omg show, stop breaking the beautiful friendship between the two guys! It's time to put them back together!

Finished Capital Scandal last night (*weeps*), and will be started Hwayugi next week. Watching more While You Were Sleeping (AKA the Han Woo Tak show) tonight.

Guardian/Fandom
Here's a weird thing I'm noticing about Guardian: when I wrote slash into other shows, I expected canon would necessarily diverge from that point to a greater or lesser extent, and that was fine, you know? Leave it to the reader to intuit! But because one could totally write first times into Guardian without changing canon at all, it feels like I should try harder to be 100% canon compliant, even though I don't particularly want to because canon compliance is a straitjacket. *defiantly Houdinis her way out of it*

Another thing is that I really need to sort out my icon usage. I have five Guardian icons uploaded, and I haven't really figured out what they connote for me yet, so I'm pretty much using them at random, which bothers me.

In Due South, I have my "sympathetic listening face" icon and my "hmm, not sure about that" icon, and in White Collar I have an "ooh!" icon, an "exhauuusted" icon, a "working hard" icon, and three differently nuanced facepalms. Heh. Even my recent set of Kdrama icons gave me "friends clinking coffee cups", "rueful smile" and "peeking around a corner". But my Guardian icons all feel a bit vague (with the possible exception of Shen Wei's brilliant grin). In particular, I need a less nervous version of Guo Changcheng writing in his notebook, for "taking note of that" purposes. But I'd also like replacement "sympathetic listening face" and a "hmm, not sure about that" icons, Guardian edition.

IOW, at some point I need to make some more icons!

Other TV
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (which, if you've ever wondered what it's like, let's just say a large chunk of the most recent episode revolved around the main character's yeast infection, complete with musical numbers parodying Cats), Speechless, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, more Grimm.

Films
Still haven't made it to The Favourite, but we did see a Polish film, Cold War, which was arty and beautiful and full of Terrible Life Choices. I didn't care about the characters at all. It vaguely reminded me of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, although I don't remember much about that so it might just have been the Eastern European setting and the unnegotiated non-monogamy.

Also Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which was as good as everyone's been saying, and a Netflix documentary called Being George Clooney about the dubbing actors who voice George Clooney's film roles in other languages, which was fun and interesting but sadly didn't include any East Asians. (I wanted to hear Ocean's Eight in Korean!)

Writing/making things
I now have three nested WIPs: the "goal" WIP which I'm very stuck on, the taking-a-break-from-the-goal-WIP WIP, which I'm only mildly stuck on and will get back to as soon as I've finished the flashfic, and the taking-a-quick-moment-out-to-write-a-flashfic-oh-it-wants-to-be-a-PWP?-dammit!-and-two-days-later-I'm-still-bogged-down-in-it-why-are-they-still-wearing-clothes?! flashfic.

The second of these is my favourite; it's <sing tune="My Favourite Things">cracky and angsty and so self-indulgent...</song>

I am definitely, absolutely, 100% not allowed to start anything else until I've finished one of these, preferably two (depending on how long the second one takes and whether I need to make another "little" something for [community profile] fan_flashworks before it's done).

Korean study
Not even flashcards. /o\ /o\ /o\

Life/mental state things
My shoulder is bordering on debilitatingly sore, probably from too much time on the computer but I don't want to stop!!! I went for a swim yesterday to try to loosen it up, and banged my head at the pool (outdoor pool; gusty wind; a plastic crate blew into my head while I was doing backstroke; pool attendants gave me an ice pack and took good care of me).

I continue to neglect large portions of my life in favour of trying to decide what kind of underwear Shen Wei wears writing. La la la la la...

Good things
Spicy turmeric lattes. Wriiiting. Guardian. Fandom. Kitties. I finally weeded my path!

하나. [personal profile] rheasilvia has written a wonderful, not overly detailed intro post for Guardian, in case you were wondering what I've been going on about for the last few months. Go see!

둘. Not that anyone but me cares, but the band/album I couldn't remember (and was damning with faint praise) the other day was Bliss's A Change in the Weather. And I remembered without looking in my car! \brain/

셋. I'm so enjoying people's replies to the polls on my recent posts. Thank you! ♥ (At the moment, ticky-boxes are beating out both sleep and kitties. Feel free to weigh in, if you haven't!)

넷. If, like me, you've wondered whether you need to know anything about comics to enjoy Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse, rest assured that you don't, and it's still AWESOME and AWESOME and really AWESOME. *so happy*

다섯. *dies of having too many tabs open*

(Is that a thing? It could be a thing. I should probably close some, just in case.)
