Tamaz Borashvili to Become Next State Security Service Chief
Hours after Geka Geladze announced his resignation as State Security Service (SSSG) chief just five months into the post, Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze nominated Geladze’s deputy, Tamaz Borashvili, to replace him, with Geladze set to become Deputy Interior Minister.
Borashvili will be the fourth SSSG chief since Grigol Liluashvili resigned in April 2025, following Anri Okhanashvili, who served from April to August 2025; Mamuka Mdinaradze, from September 2025 to April 2026; and Geladze, from April to September 2026.
Kobakhidze described Borashvili as a career official with more than 20 years of experience in the law enforcement and state security system. Borashvili’s nomination must be approved by the disputed Parliament, which elects the SSSG chief for a six-year term under the Rules of Procedure.
According to Kobakhidze, Borashvili served as First Deputy Head and later Head of the General Inspection at the Ministry of Internal Affairs between 2017 and 2022. He returned to the SSSG in 2022 as head of its Tbilisi Main Division and later served as Director of the State Security Department. He was appointed Deputy Head of the SSSG in September 2025.
“Over the last two decades, Tamaz Borashvili will be the first career official of the state security system to take up the position of head of the state security system,” Kobakhidze said, arguing that his appointment would contribute to the “institutional strengthening” of the agency.
Borashvili said that he had served Georgia’s national security interests for years and described the prospective appointment as a “special honor.” He said that “if the Parliament expresses its confidence in me, I will try to take up the protection of our country’s interests and the strengthening of security with double the energy, and it will be a great honor for me to hold this position,” thanking Kobakhidze for the expressed trust.
Borashvili replaces Geladze, who assumed office in April, replacing Mamuka Mdinaradze as the fifth head of the State Security Service of Georgia (SSSG) since its establishment in 2015. Geladze did not give a reason for his resignation, saying only that he would continue his activities “in another agency” following “consultations with the political team.”
Kobakhidze thanked Geladze for his work, calling him an “exceptionally conscientious person and an outstanding professional.” According to him, Geladze made a “very great contribution” to state security and the fight against crime, including organized, drug-related, and corruption-related crimes.
Kobakhidze said Geladze would become Deputy Interior Minister, where, he argued, his “knowledge and experience” would “significantly strengthen” the Ministry’s team.
