Yes, a post to the community I started. Wow! So, I'm taking a class called Public Speaking. Learning how to talk in front of people, that kind of thing. I have my Final Speech coming up on Wednesday--any topic I choose, for 10 to 12 minutes. For my topic, I chose the idea that inspired me to start this community (not that it's gone anywhere). I've never actually explained it, so here goes. Ever watched MTV's Cribs or VH1's The Fabulous Life Of...? Showcases the extravegant, expensive, everyday life of celebrities. And allll that money they make. A while ago, I had a thought--all of that money...imagine if each uber-rich celebrity--be they TV or movie stars, athletes, whatever--donated a million dollars to homeless people? You give each homeless person some money--not even a million, just a couple thousand--and that can turn their whole life around. Enough money for clothes, food, a place to live, medicine...it wouldn't cost that much, compared to what the average celebrity spends on a daily basis. And not just the homeless, but the millions in America who live in poverty. There are 3.5 million people living in poverty in the U.S. Do you know what Cher's earnings are? $40 million. She could donate a million to each impoverished American and still have $36.5 mil left over to scrape by. And she's just #25 on the Forbes list. Number one is George Lucas at $400 million. So, 3.5 million people in poverty. Then, according to my research, there's about 3/4 of a million homeless people. 3.5 + .75 = 4.25. Cher would still have $35.75 million. I'm hoping to print out some of my research today, and I'll be doing the math, don't you worry...of course, then I need find a way to add more, for 10 to 12 minutes worth of talking...but anyway, there's my idea. Or, at least, the start of it. Each celebrity donating a million dollars, or not even, to help the American homeless and impoverished. The celebrities can spare it, and the poor can use it, there is no doubt. My idea expands towards financial aid for kids who can't afford college, medicine for US and other countries, the whole AIDS in africa thing, that kind of thing...but I'll get to that in another post ;) So...there. An attempt at kick-starting the comm, and why this whole thing got started in the first place. I imagined starting a campaign, with lots of people, joined online, starting petitions and sending them to celebrities and other rich folks...*shrug* It's a pipe dream, but it's there... If anyone knows any sources to find information on how much is spent on financial aid each year, cost of medicine, average cost of living, that kind of thing...please, lemme know! :) Thanks! The song I'm listening to is so very appropriate... I lift my voice so I can show you There's so much more in life that we can do Because the world has another face Because the world has another face Open your eyes Open your eyes... |
