Dear Imena, Thanks for your last letter and the photos of Nairobi (Nairobi is such a beautiful word, isn't it, Nai-ro-bi, makes me think of a song). We're in that funny stage, here...exams are over but nobody's gone home yet. Odd knowing that I've done my last ever exam at Hogwarts and that, in a week or so, I'm never going to see most of these people again. I got an offer from MUCL (Magical University of Central London) and one from RCSR (Royal College of Stratford Retiring) and I've got no idea which I want to take up -- they're both for History of Magic with Resoration and Preservation of Ancient Spells, which is exciting. It's a little bit scary, though - I'm the first person in my family to even THINK about UNIVERSITY and I don't think I'm ready to leave all my friends behind (Ted's got another year, Ed's got another 2). ANYWAY, what I'm writing for is to tell you that, if it's okay with you, I'd really, REALLY like to come out there for a month or two this summer, talk to some women about this idea for a book I've got (African Birth Songs? Y'think that would work? I've heard some of them, been trying to LEARN some of them, but no luck). I know I'm young to be thinking about writing a book but, you know that feeling when you've had a song in your head for days and days and days only it's only the first line and it loops over and over? It's exactly like that. I have to come out there, Imena, so that I can see. Plus I want to come see Lo and it couldn't hurt me to get away from the things I've done here. I want to plant her something where I don't have to watch it grow.Write back. Tell me I'm mad and stupid but tell me to come anyway. Love to Lo and you and yours. Len. Tags: 1971, marlene_mckinnon

Dear Regulus, Sorry for not writing for so long, but things just keep getting busier here. Why haven’t you written back to me? You’d think that school wouldn’t be much fun, but the lads and I get along really well and even though we still have to go to lessons, it’s not horrible. Plus, the food is actually pretty good. I have officialy decided that Cousin Narcissa is a twit. I caught her giving me these stupid little looks at lunch the other day. I don’t know who she thinks she is. Father is the older brother after all, so she shouldn’t be looking all superior at me like that. If she keeps at it I think I might slip something into her tea when she isn’t looking. Don’t tell Mother and Father I said that! It wouldn’t be anything really bad. Maybe just something to give her a few spots or a few boils or something. Or they have these novelty tea cups from the Zonko’s catalogue that do interesting things. (do you remember that place? Bella took us there when we all went to the Quidditch match that one time when she was in school. And you ate too many cakes when we went to have tea and then you got ill. Do you remember that?) Speaking of Quidditch, the first match is going to be played in a few weeks time. I can’t wait. It shoud be brilliant. It’s Slytherin versus Gryffindor just like the match we saw with Bella. I’m rooting for Gryff When you come to school we can sit together at the matches and yell rude things at the opposing team. That should be great fun, don’t you think? The lads James and Remus and Peter are a great bunch of blokes. I think you might like them. We play lots of cards and James and I go broom-riding and we all get up to a lot of interesting things when we should be doing our school work. (I’m sure you know not to tell Mother and Father that, but just in case…) Anyway, I should be going. Dinner is in a few minutes and we’re having shepherds pie. I know Mother says it’s common, but I like it and if I’m not down there promptly then I won’t get a proper plate full. I’ll speak with you later. I hope that you are doing well. Please write soon. Dear Da Fath Mar Mr. Mark Dearborn, I am at school now. Mom told you about it Uncle Geoffrey said. I don't think it's like the muggle boarding schools. Do they have Houses in those schools? There are four Houses in Hogwarts (that's the school's name). Gryffindor's colours are red and gold. They are known for being really brave. I think they're just loud. The Hat thought The professor tried to put me in that House, but I didn't think I would do good in it. Hufflepuff has yellow and black as its colours. They are thought to be loyal and they work hard. I guess they didn't think I was a hardworker. Slytherins are silver and green. Those students are sly. Everyone doesn't like Slytherin. I don't know why. I was put into Ravenclaw. Our colours are blue and bronze. We're the smart people of the school. I don't think I should be here, but everyone says that the Hat professors don't make mistakes, so I guess I'm stuck here. Oh! We all have animals. Well, not really have them, but they are our House mascots (is that the right word? A 5th year told me it was). Gryffindors are lions, Hufflepuffs are bagders, Slytherins are snakes, and we are eagles. I am glad to be here. It's real fun, even if it's different. There are so many other witches and wizards here. You probably wouldn't like it. I hope I can be great like them one day. So I can make mum proud and yo I like it here. I want to be on the House team as soon as I can. The sport is called quidditch and we play it on our brooms a giant pitch. There are seven players on a team. The keeper stops the quaffle red ball from going through the hoops that the chasers (there are three of those) throw. The two beaters try to stop the other team's chasers from getting the ball. And the seeker, everyone likes him, when he finds the snitch yellow ball the game is over and his team gets 150 points. Each red ball that goes through the hoop gets the chaser's team 10 points. It can get confusing but it's always fun to watch. (I want to be a chaser. I think that they are the funnest to watch.) I hope the owl doesn't spook any of your neighbors. I tried to find a brown one because they might blend in better to the trees near your house. I thought to send it to Uncle Geoffrey so he could send it to you, but then I realised he wouldn't know how to send it by muggle nonmagical post. I hope this reaches you well enough. Could you tell me how to send you things nonmagically? I wouldn't write often Can't write So I can keep you informed about the big things? Sincerely, Tags: 1971, caradoc_dearborn

Dear Mum, I have the answers to the questions you asked. Well, all ace except one. I was too scared to ask Professor McGonagall if she ever dances naked under the moon.I've put them in a list below. School is going great! I'm learned how to make a cut-healing potion today and I had my first flying lesson on Monday! Say hello to Dad and Petunia for me! 1). None of the professors knew what I was talking about when I mentioned the word 'Gaia' and some of the students laughed or called me names when I asked them so I think that's a no. 2). I haven't heard anyone mention the Goddess so I think that's a no too. 3). We flew on the broomsticks with the brush part behind us, not the other way around like you showed me. James and Sirius laughed at me when I tried to ride it the other way. And I don't know what makes the brooms fly. I asked Alice and she didn't know but she said it's probably a levitation charm. 4). Our spells to make the magic work are a lot different from yours, Mum. There no riteul ritual and we don't burn candles. We used our wands and say magic words in Latin or some other old language. I'm sorry Mum, but I don't think your way of doing magic really works. But maybe I can show you how we do magic at Hogwarts when I come home at Christmas? Your daughter, Tags: 1971, lily_evans

Dear Regulus, Hello there. How are you? I’m sorry I haven’t written again before now but things have gotten rather busy. I have loads of homework and there always seems to be something to do. Did you get my letter? Owls are usually very reliable (especially Nyx) and I’m a bit disapoin suprised that you haven’t written me back yet so I expect you did. You’ve probably been just as busy with the tutors as I have with my schoolwork. Lessons have gotten a bit more intresting now that we’ve moved past some of the really easy things that I'd already learnt at home. Dark Arts is rather brilliant and I’m a dab hand at Transfig, just like I thought. The professor for Transfigurations is our Head of House. She’s a bit strict, but not that bad. Not nearly as bad as some of the tutors we had, that’s for sure. I told you about the boys in my dormitory last letter. The first one I spoke about – James. He’s an odd one, but I do like him, I think. I didn’t mention to you last time, but when we first met we didn’t like each other AT ALL. He was a great prat, actually. Kept telling me to get out of his dormitory (he’s a bit bossy, really). I nearly punched him a couple of times. But then he had some Bertie Bott beans and we were picking out the really gross flavours and I don’t know what happened but were weren’t fighting anymore. He’s a blood traitor and he’s not at all ashamed of it! It’s really weird. I can’t imagine not being at least a little bothered by something like that. Andromeda doesn’t Just don’t tell Mother and Father that I speak to him or they’ll be even more cross with me.None of the boys here are anything like you. I like the boys in my dormitory, but it’s weird, you know? I got used to having you around all the time and it feels funny that I can’t tell you about things when they happen or hop into your bed at night for a chat like we always do. I miss Still, Christmas hols aren’t that far away. And next year you’ll be here and we can spend loads of time together. I could help you with your lessons. They have house elfs here too you know. Bet we could think of some funny things to do to them together. I miss youI should finish this up so that Nyx can take it off to you. I hope you’re still finding lots of trouble to get into on your own. Just remember that you can’t blame me for broken things when I’m not there. I’ll write again soon. Please write back. I don’t think Mother and Father will and I’m scared I don’t want everyone to forget about me.Love from your big brother, Tags: 1971, sirius_black

Uncle Geoffrey - Guess what! I was Sorted into SLYTHERIN. Uncle Geoffrey? Are you still reading? I was only joking!! I got into Ravenclaw! YOU SAID I HAD TO TAKE A EXAM. It was only a HAT! It said or is it thought? that I could do good in Gryffindor but I told or thought that I wasnt as brave as it said in its song. It's awesome and all, but all the blokes in my dorm are four feet over my head and I still can't believe we have a House ghost. I hope she doesn't go into the boy's dormitore. That would be weird wierd wried odd. The other four guys are GIANTS and I look like a houseelf next to them. I'm not lying! OK, maybe I'm putting on a little, but there is this one guy in my dorm who I can see up his nose. It's not a nice sight. This other guy keeps asking me questions about our world. I think hes muggleborn. He's either muggleborn or completely daft. I hope he's muggleborn. I don't want to room with a loon. What if he IS off the bend? Can they allow crazy people in Hogwarts? I've heard stories from, well, you. YOU said anyone could get in with the headmaster. Does he let crazy people in? What if one tries to kill me in my sleep? Or snores? Now I'm nervous. Real nervous. I don't know anyone in my House. I did meet this one girl on the train who got on with me well enough, but she got Sorted into Slytherin. From what the 5th year prefect told us, that's a bad House. How can a House be bad? Or this House be only smart? What House were you in again? Or my mom Tags: 1971, caradoc_dearborn

Dear Petunia, I'm so sorry I din't write to you before, it's been so busy here with all the classes starting and it's so difir different from home. But I like it, everything just makes so much more sense, like how magic can be used to do anything, from cooking food to turning matches into needles! That's what we did today in Transfiguration, it was hard, but fun too. Me and James and this other boy, (Serious? strange name isn't it?) were the ones who got the closest to making the matchstick turn pointey and silvery. I know, I know, you don't want to hear about magic. But it's going to be hard to write to you if I can't tell you about what I do everyday. You have to admit now that magic does exist, I was right, you were wrong. Nyah-nyah! But I shouldn't gloot, Mum gives me a smack on the bum (even though I'm eleven now!) everytime I do, and I'm sure she'd know, even if it was in a letter. You aren't angry that I'm a witch and you're not- do you Petunia? You were acting awfully funny on the train station, I hope you're not mad me, I couldn't stand it if you were. I wish that you were with me, at Hogwarts. You'd be a third year, probly a Ravenclaw and I could say to my friends, that's my sister, she's so smart (cause you are) and I bet you'd be top of the class and know all the best spells and you'd teach them to me- and everyone would know the Evans sisters. You're shaking your head, aren't you? Like you usualy do, 'there goes Lily, off in her fantasay world again'. Axcept Except, I kind of am now, aren't? Here at Hogwarts. And you're back in your real world, at Westwood. I hope you're doing alright at school, I know you are. Have you met any boys yet? You should tell me when you do. I'm going to sign off now, but remeber to write back soon! Your sister! P.S. Please don't be freeked out by the owl. His name is Phinias and he's very friendly. Give him some water and he'll fly back to school as soon as he's rested. Tags: 1971, lily_evans

Dear Family, I don't mean to worry you, but Andy said that there is the possibility, however slight, that her mum and dad might actually try to harm you in some way. Hopefully, they won't. It is very unlikely that they will. On account of them being berks and God do I hate them But, just in case, be really careful. If anything strange happens or you think that there's something unusual going on, leave the house. Go to one of our aunts' or uncles' house. Just for a few hours, and then you can come home. If someone actually comes in the house, get in the car and drive away. Drive anywhere at all, because they're probably not going to be able to keep up with you. I'm sorry that this is happening. That I let you get dragged into this whole thing. And I will explain come summertime. It's not the kind of thing you put in a letter. Please write as often as you can so I know that you're all safe to tell me how everything is. And don't let Fortinbras be outside too long alone, yeah? Love Ted. Tags: 1971, ted_tonks

Mum, Another year, and so far, train ride was brilliant. Really - much more amusing than the first time. although, I didn't know anyone first year but-- I just finished watching the sorting ceremony again a good hour ago. And I realize, I must have looked ruddy stupid up there my past year. I saw one little boy, who was sorted into Hufflepuff, blushing and it got me thinking - did I look that embarrased? Gosh, I'm such a feminine whiner. Honestly. Food, as usual, was delicious. I layed off the turkey this year, Mum, just like you said. Gives me horrible cramps stomach aches. The dorm seems a lot smaller, actually. Perhaps it's because I've grown so accustomed to it - I wouldn't know. Therefore, I'm hoping on making it much more "alive" this year. Perhaps some of the girls in my dorm will help me sprucen it up, yeah? One can only hope. Though, Amelia is so bloody lazy I doubt she'll do anything. How's dad been? I know after the aurors called him in for work that day, I haven't been able to say good bye before I left. Tell him I miss him lots and that I send my love. Hopefully my improvements and tiresome Transfiguration study sessions will pay off this term. I'm definitely hoping dear old Minerva noticed a difference. No, Mum. Close your mouth. Don't want to catch flies, do we? I know, "Never call a professor by their first name, dear. Be reasonable." I'm not laughing, I swear! hah. Yeah, right. Anyways, need to head to bed. Bright and early day tomorrow, you know? Send my love to the family and gosh, mum - get some rest. Lots of Love, Tags: 1971, alice_corbett

Dear Mum and Dad, I'm here at school! It's so great! After I said goodbye to you on the train I found a seat with some other girls. They were in Griffindor and they were very nice to me. One of the girls, her name is Alice, (she's a second year) she likes the Beatles too and we spent the whole train ride discussing wich which songs were our favourites and who we thought was cuter, Paul or John. I said Paul obviously but Alice said John. It doesn't matter though, I think we're going to be good friends. After riding on the train for a long time we finally got to Hogwarts. We got off the train and this giant man named Hagred showed us first years to the boats that we traveled in across the lake. I was in a boat with two boys ugh, one was nice though. His name was Remus Lupin and he likes to read too! I didn't think boys liked to read. James, the other one, is a regular annoying boy. He wouldn't stop talking about this thing called Kwittitch or something and he kept saying that he wanted to be in Griffindor. That's where I wanted to be (after talking with Alice) and I was kind of hoping he wasn't going to be in my house All three of us (James, Remus and me) all ended up in Griffndor. There was a sorting serim ceremony where a hat talked to us! It was really strange! The hat said that I was really smart and I could be in Ravenclaw, another house but then I asked if I could be in Griffindor and and the hat said yes, he said that sometime in the future I'm going to have to be really brave and Griffindor would be a good place for me. I said that I'd be really brave, I even told the hat about the time I stopped the dog from biting Petunia! It's so different here, with all the magic and stuff. There are frogs made of chocolate that hop like real ones, staircases that move, ghosts, and the Headmaster made our food appear right in front of us! But I think I'm going to like being a witch. It feels like I've come home. I'll write to you soon! Your Lily P.S. Please tell Petunia that I'll write her soon and I hope that she's having fun at Westwood Comp! Tags: 1971, lily_evans

Dear Mum, Oh the most horrible thing nearly happened. You know how one of the special precaw precoh the things protecting the Shack is that tree? The Whomping Willow? Well...some of the boys think it's ace and try to play around it. And one boy — Davey Gudgeon, he's a third-year in Gryffindor — he got a bit too close and got it all riled up and it rearly took out his eye! I feel so guilty. Headmaster Dumbledore had warned everyone about it, yes, but still, if I wasn't here, neither would that tree. Luckily he was more freaked than hurt, but it still worries me. At least now the Williow is spicificly off limits, so hopefully no one else will go there. I don't think I realised just how much my being here could effect the other students. It's a bit unnerving, really. It will be nice to come home for Christmas. I miss you and Dad. You still think I should be here, don't you? Love, Tags: 1971, remus_lupin

Dear Dad, Hallo. How are you and Mum doing without me around? I bet the other night was different for you, wasn't it? I had an okay go of it. I expect I'm starting to get used to the Shack a bit, now that its not brand new anymore. Well, what I'm writing to you about is kind of on the same subject. We were in Herbology today, and Professor Sprout took us out to the edge of the Forbidden Forest to look at some kind of plant growing wild. (I can't remember wih which one, but it's not important.) Some of the other students heard something in there, and they started getting all weird, saying that werewolves lived in there. Of course, they were looking for actual wolves, so I know they're kind of idiots, but do you think that might be true? Might some of the werevoles live in the forest? It is magical after all. And if they do live there do you think Do you think the one that who bit me is in there? Um. Maybe he'd want to come into the Shack with me?Sorry. This is stupid. My love to Mum. September 1, 1971 Dear Mum and Dad, Okay, I got sorted into Ravenclaw. Sorry, Dad, not into Gryffindor like you. Sorry, Mum, not into Hufflepuff like you. Ravenclaw. I don’t bloody know anyone in bloody Ravenclaw. And I don’t like anyone so far. They are all already reading and studying and we haven’t had any classes yet. Besides, I don’t like blue. I don’t even like ravens that much. I met some nice people in the train, but they, of course, were sorted into Hufflepuff or into Gryffindor. I met a red-haired girl who is Muggle-born but knows a lot about magic already. She’s read Hogwarts, a History about five hundred times, I’m sure, because she knows it all. Well, did she get sorted into bloody Ravenclaw? Noooo. That stupid hat sorted her into Gryffindor. With all her books. And me? bloodyRavenclaw! There was also a bloke with messy hair and big glasses. I liked him a lot and we could be good friends, I think. Again, the hat sent him to Gryffindor. Which was okay. But I should have been sorted there, too. I hate that hat. I tried to convince it to sort me into Gryffindor, but it told me that I was very clever and would do well in Ravenclaw. And guess what it told me, too? That I was so clever that one day I might even work with the Muggle P.M. I’d rather be stupider and in Gryffindor. Your son, KingsleyTags: 1971, kingsley_shacklebolt

Dear Mum and Dad, Hullo. Sorry I haven't written in a few weeks. Exams are coming up, and I've been spending lots of quality time with my textbooks. You know how I told you that I was bollocks having a difficult time in Tranfigurations this year? I've been working at that, so I won't do terrible on the exam. Professor McGonagall told me that I'm showing a lot of improvement. I've Andromeda to thank for that, she's ace at the subject. Funny thing that I mentioned Andromeda, because, see Speaking of Andromeda, I have to ask Bollocks. They're never going to let her come for the holidays, Ignore those scribblings. I accidentally started writing my History of Magic notes on this letter. And you don't want to hear about the 1672 Dissolution of Wizarding Warfare Act, believe me! The way Professor Binns teaches, it's wicked boring. Which is a shame because history is really interesting when it's not being taught by a monotone ghost. What I really wanted to ask you, was if Andromeda could stay over our house for the summer hols. Now before you get angry and say no, just think about it. She and I have been going together since November, so this isn't just some school-yard fling. I know that you haven't met her, but, honestly, she's the nicest girl you'll ever meet. Pretty, polite, clever, and she's so funny she could even make Aunt Josephine laugh. I really, really like her. I might even love her a little bit. Andromeda's whole family hates her because she wasn't sorted into Slytherin. Honestly, her parents are just awful to her, and her sisters are twice as bad. If she doesn't stay with us, she'll have a terrible summer. I won't even be able to go visit her, because the Blacks don't let Mudbloods suitors into their house. She could stay in Julie's room while Julie is in Majorca with Uncle Denny, Aunt Harriet, and the twins. When Julie comes back, Andromeda could sleep in my room and I'll pitch a tent in the garden. (You know I'm serious about this girl when I offer to sleep outside for her) And I swear on Grandpa's grave that if you let her stay, we wouldn't do anything improper. We wouldn't even THINK about improper things. Just think about it. Please. It would mean an awful lot to me, and I know you two would love Andromeda once you got to know her. (Especially you, Dad. You should see her dance, it's like watching an angel fly. I bet she'd love to hear your Bach vinyls!) Your very, very, very hopeful son Ted Tags: 1971, ted_tonks

Reg, How are you? Hogwarts is absolutely brilliant. Well, apart from lessons, of course. But even some of them are rather interesting. We’ve been potting honking daffodils in Herbology. They're quite funny as they often go off unexpectedly. The blokes in my dorm are quite brillant as well. I’ve three roommates, all my age. An ace boy with spectacals spectacles called James, a chubby short one called Peter who likes pudding as much as I do, and an odd, pale fellow called Remus who doesn’t really talk much. He’s quite interesting Remus has the most amazing scars all up and down his back. I snuck a peek when He won’t say how he got them and was somewhat cross at me for asking. Some strange accident or something, I expect. Now Reg, you can tell me truthfully. Do they hate me now? I expect they’ve been screaming about it nonstop since they heard. Doesn’t bother me. They can stuff it for all I care. Have they asked about me? I wrote them first thing after I got here. Well, almost first thing. But I haven’t heard anything back yet. I’m expecting a Howler any day now, although maybe they wouldn’t want to call attention to me because of it all. Oh. Must dash. We all have some Potions homework to finish and Remus is glaring at me because I’m using his quill to write this. I miss having you to slap about on a regular basis. Give yourself a good smack or two in my memory, yeah? Cheers, Tags: 1971, sirius_black

Dear Mum and Dad, I’m here and I’m okay. I am now in my dorm for the night. I got sorted into Gryffindor which sort of surprises me, but not really I guess. The sorting hat was very impressed that a boy like me would be learning magic. I was a bit scared when the sorting hat knew my secret, but I guess it won’t tell any other students, will it? There are three other boys in Gryffindor, and they split us up into two rooms so we don’t get very crowded. I am rooming with Peter Petigrew, Sirius Black (spelt like the star, I asked), and James Potter. Dad, do you know if that’s the same family as that Mr. Potter you talk about sometimes? They seem pretty nice, though Peter looks a bit home sick, and Sirius is upset about something I think. I should go to bed now. First class will be Transfiguration with Professor McGonagall. Wish me luck! Love, Tags: 1971, remus_lupin
