Summary:  For a second, Volley is certain she’s misheard him. The first words she’s ever heard out of Optimus Prime’s own mouth can’t possibly be a pick-up line. She’s having a fever dream of some sort, maybe. Probably.

But then she looks at Megatron, and knows she didn’t mishear at all. He’s speechless and blushing, opening his mouth only to snap it closed, faceplates heating so abruptly that the air around him shimmers. And why wouldn’t he be?

After all, Optimus Prime just hit on him.

Reccer's Notes: This fic will always be my "go-to" when I need a pick-me-up.  Megatron and Optimus Prime both being adorable is too good to pass up.

Death Gate Cycle

Brief recap of my experience rereading the Death Gate Cycle books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman: I found out they have the series (in the German translation) at Vienna's SFF library (which is very cool and a shame that I only checked it out for the first time this year) and borrowed the first one to find out if it is as good as I remember it from when I first read it 20+ years ago. It was! So the next time I went to the library I checked out the rest of the series – which, inexplicably, did not include books 4 and 7. This is fine, I told myself, I will just buy them as ebooks when I get there.
I read books 2 and 3 soon and enjoyed them and wanted to buy book 4 – only to find out that there is no way to legally buy the ebook in Austria. (Either that or only in very hidden places and not in the several major ebook shops I tried.) Several of the others are available!, but not this one. A mystery.
Fine, I told myself, I will buy the fourth book as a paperback and then afterwards I will donate it to the library so other people won't have the same problem. (I did buy it in English though.) And I wanted to buy it through a local bookshop, but the small one near me couldn't order it so I ordered it from the nearest bookstore chain.
And then I waited. Quite impatiently, because I had a seven hour train ride coming up and I really wanted to read book 4!! …and this is how I, uh, downloaded a book for the first time in many years. (And even that was harder than I thought it would be!) I don't really feel bad about it under the circumstances tbh, just a bit awkward. But the paperback only arrived two weeks later and I'm very glad I didn't have to wait until then.
I read book 4 on the train, and then in the next three days I also read a book a day until I finished the series. Needless to add I got really into it. (Fortunately I could buy book 7 as an ebook, though it's badly formatted in places.)
I have, however, decided against donating book 4 to the library. That one is one of my favorites and it's now on my bookshelf.

On to the actual books!
I was too eager to keep reading to take notes during/after most of them, and then I was busy and now it's been three weeks, so I've already forgotten some of the details. If I had a time machine I'd happily reread them immediately, but alas.

#1, Dragon Wing
My short notes

#2, Elven Star
I remembered liking this one less than the first one, and I did this time as well. ( Barely any spoilers )

#3, Fire Sea
The first one that was completely new to me. ( Spoilers )

#4, Serpent Mage:
( Spoilers )

#5, Hand of Chaos
( Spoilers )

#6, Into the Labyrinth
( Spoilers )

#7, The Seventh Gate
( Spoilers )

Overall I had a great time reading this series. I might have to get more of the books for my bookshelf – as a bonus, many of them have very cool covers. (Though I'm even pickier with that now than before because in my old apartment I had two bookshelves, but in my new one I only have one, with two rows of books. I will get a second one eventually but haven't quite decided yet where and what kind. Not an urgent issue.)

New Year's Resolutions and Other Goals

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith posting in [site community profile] dw_community_promo
[community profile] goals_on_dw is a community for people who like goals and goal setting. A key focus is New Year's resolutions, that being among the most popular contexts for such activities. Although the most common time is January 1, "new year" can also refer to other calendars or cultures, whatever works for you. Alternatively, just pick a time that works for you and go for it. You can introduce yourself or make new friends here.

We talk about different goal systems, pros and cons of resolutions, arts and crafts for tracking goals, human psychology, and more. You can share your resolutions or other goals. There are weekly check-in posts in January, and monthly ones in the rest of the year, for folks to talk about their accomplishments. December-January is the most active period, and it starts ramping up in November as lots of people begin thinking about their goals for the next year.

2026 Free Printable Calendars, Planners, and More is the guide post for this years goal-setting activities. For more details on relevant topics, see "Things You Can Talk About Here."

IRL has been XXXing me in the YYY lately, although only in moderate levels compared to what many seem to be going through :( Lots of love and hugs. The bullshit remains ongoing here, but I think I just got sick of going into hermit-mode, or I guess maybe I've temporarily regained enough strength for other things... Either way, thanks to a friend doing word sprints with me this morning I did start writing again (and had a bit of fun, even :D) and now I'm trying to dig myself out of my Dreamwidth reading page and inbox backlog, but unfortunately it looks like this is going to be a multi-day endeavour. Be patient with me! As everyone always is here :D Just a heads-up for more not-being-on-top-of-anything than usual, I suppose. I did seem to lose interest in all my hobbies for a bit, except for petting the cat (although never as much as I should, obviously) and reading (The Unicorn Hunters was so good! I'm not the only murderer at the retirement home was so funny!!).

Meanwhile, Pillowfort is closing down :( That's sad. I feel like they were birds of a feather with Dreamwidth in terms of the kind of Internet culture and conversation style they encouraged. Quite a few users seem to be looking at Dreamwidth as a potential home, so let me signal boost a few comms:

  • [community profile] pillowfolks has been quite active if you're trying to find your people or your feet (or both!!) (or more!) in here. Introductions and site usage tips (there's more on [community profile] newcomers as well). Finding people and things on DW seems like a good starting point!
  • Spotted [community profile] pillowfolk_gamers for the Pillowfort gamers to find each other (and potentially new friends?)
  • I'm not familiar with "Pillowfort blankets" but [community profile] pillowfortu_haul makes it sound like prompt lists to answer in your journal? Which I think many in my circles would enjoy!

I'll add more as I see them while I sloooooowwwwllyyy catch up on my reading page :)

umadoshi: (autumn - carved pumpkins (wilde_hearts))

Reading: I read Siren Queen (Nghi Vo), which was unsurprisingly gorgeous, and I've started reading Consider the Fork: A History of How We Cook and Eat (Bee Wilson); I'm also technically still rereading Wilson's The Secret of Cooking, but haven't made recent progress. Oh, and I read a few more chapters of the Dungeon Crawler Carl webcomic.

Last night I suddenly got a normal daily update email from Goodreads. No indication of why it stopped for a couple solid weeks. We'll see if it continues.

Watching: Last night I saw eps. 25-26 of Zhan Zhao Adventures (of 37), so I'm getting there! Just not quickly. I'm still not following the politics well at all, which is in character for me. And during the week [personal profile] scruloose and I saw an episode or two of The Apothecary Diaries.

Weathering: We've had a few rainy, windy days here, but the weekend's weather is looking good. This weather note is really to say that Cape Breton got some snow over the last day or two. o_o Hopefully it isn't sticking around.

Smelling pretty smells: The BPAL Hallowe'en release dropped this week, and after a day or so of agonizing, I (mostly) succeeded in convincing myself (because it's true) that no matter how lovely it all sounds, and despite there being sixteen or so scents I'm interested in (they are on my wishlist spreadsheet, largely in hopes that writing them down has exorcised them from my brain), I absolutely do not need to go in on a decant circle. (Even if it has been about twelve years since I caved on decant circles and I do eventually want to get some newer Samhain...so I can let it age to the point that I like it, but have something newer than 2014.) I essentially don't wear the scents I have; I haven't even tried all of the scents I have (and IIRC have still literally never entirely used up an imp, although part of that is the hoarding instinct, not because I couldn't have worn a favorite enough to be finished with it); the exchange rate and shipping would make it stupidly expensive; and it has been an expensive month here in general.

It did all at least remind me break out my existing Weenies stash and wear scents on a few days.

Farmshare: This is the second-last week of our farmshare for the year (we both lean toward doing it again next year, but the short eight-week one with a fairly small number of openings that's picking up immediately after this one filled up before we decided whether or not to sign up), and by midweek we still had rather a lot of last week's veggies left to work through. Thursday, when we were roughly planning to go do our weekly pickup, wound up being busy and exhausting, so with the end of the farmshare season arriving so soon, we decided to put this week's pickup off until tomorrow (and here's hoping I'm right that the farmshare week rolls over between Sunday and Monday). That'll mean our pickup for the final week is also a weekend one, but we won't be risking a steadily-increasing backlog.

Instead, Thursday night we washed and froze the black kale and celery, the latter of which we also first ran through the food processor. The kale and some of the celery are destined (barring incident) for Samin Nosrat's Tuscan bean and kale soup tomorrow, and that'll leave us some amount of celery for future soups (although so many recipes call for a number of stalks that it'll all be an estimate). Then last night we used up all of our potatoes and leeks and a remaining half of a Savoy cabbage in a second batch of potato leek (with cabbage) soup, so the produce situation is much more under control...until tomorrow.

[community profile] newcomers is a community for people who are just getting started on Dreamwidth, in the tradition of [community profile] twitter_refugees and [community profile] reddit_refugees. This community supports former users of other platforms who are moving to Dreamwidth because their previous platform has become untenable or has closed. As such, it will increase activity with each wave of new users, in hopes of helping them get settled in Dreamwidth so they want to stick around. It also serves previous users returning after a long hiatus, people who want to do more with a Dreamwidth blog that was only intermittent, or anyone else who wants help connecting and figuring out how to use this venue.

The community is highly active at present because Pillowfort is closing. Many posts are appearing to help Pillowfort users who are migrating to DW.

Here are the two Halloween cards I made last evening. The elements are mostly printable scrapbooking bits that I bought on Etsy, but there are a couple of stickers that came from elsewhere. The one with the couple is going to My Padawan and the other is for BFT.

The first two episodes of Yaga were intriguing. It's a new Canadian show inspired by the legend of Baba Yaga.

It stars Hudson Williams and Carrie-Anne Moss.

The soundtrack has Eastern European and Russian covers of American songs. That fits well.

I'm a newcomer to Dreamwidth and am still getting my footing, but I made a community for Solo TTRPGs - these are tabletop role-playing games that are made for one player, or solo-play rulesets for group play games like D&D and Pathfinder. If you don't have the time for a group ttrpg, solo play games can help scratch that itch. There's a huge variety of game styles and settings, and many are easily accessible via print & play.

The novella Volatile Memory by Seth Haddon (The World of Reforged) was amazing! Scavenger Wylla Sotain finds a MARK I HAWK mask holding the consciousness of Sable Alzian.

This is a fascinating sci-fi worldbuilding with AI masks giving animal-related abilities to their wearers. The 2nd person POV works wonderfully to reveal little by little the twists of the plot.

Wylla is a trans woman and they're both sapphic.
