I wish I knew what the problem was. I know there are a lot of people (especially younger people) who complain of having short attention spans. To be honest it's never really affected my work, except perhaps in highschool where I did kind of poorly, but it does make things more difficult for me. When I had to see a psychologist last year to obtain my letter for chest surgery I was told that because of the results of the tests he had given me, if I were to continue seeing him he would most likely have worked with me for attention deficit issues. I was told that I scored very well on the IQ test -- 132. I was surprised when he told me that because I was very, very sleepy when I was being tested and didn't realize that I was being given an IQ test at all! He seemed more concerned, during our talk, about me staying in academics than he did about my surgery. "You can do pretty much whatever you want," he said. Though he did suggest spending some more time learning math. :]
Anyway, apparently I scored very low though on the tests that gauge attention span, though I don't know which tests were which. I remember being told to recite numbers back at the proctor. 3, 7, 72... After the numbers went beyond 6 in a row or so I just couldn't remember them anymore. I wonder if I would have scored better if I had gotten more rest.
Although I mention all of this because I notice how it affects me more and more. It's always been this way, but I suppose that the more work I have the worse the repercussions are. I retain almost everything I hear or read if I just pay attention... but that's the difficult part! Once in a while I feel very focused, but those time periods are also generally time periods where I am extremely anxious or I otherwise feel sort of... jittery? I don't know how else to explain it. Slightly crazy, but not necessarily in a concerning way. Sometimes I feel very motivated and I sit down and read a chapter out of my biology book and retain almost everything I read, even down to where the words were placed on the page. I go into class the next day for a quiz and suddenly the quizzes that seemed so difficult are embarrassingly easy, and that's just because I was able to do the reading.
Most of the time though I sit and stare at the page and it's like I'm doing anything but that. The words are there and I'm saying them in my head but they are not being translated into information. I forget everything the instant I stop reading it. I'm thinking of a thousand other things -- other things I'd like to do, other things I have done that day, yesterday, last week.
But anyway, this is frustrating because I know I can do well but I can't make myself get into the frame of mind where I DO well. It's a really distinct difference, too. And I try and try and sit in front of books for hours but if I'm not in that frame of mind nothing comes to me, either while studying or on the day of a test. My scores are not at all correlated with how many hours I spend studying, consequently. Actually, if anything they may be inversely correlated, because it's an indication that I've comprehended everything better if I've spent less time going over it.
I've tried to compensate for it by sort of listening to how I feel at the moment. Sometimes it's hard, because I will know, for instance, that I SHOULD be studying for biology but I will instead INTENSELY feel like doing my reading for my literature class or something. So I do the reading instead, because I know I'll get that done and remember everything well. It's a more logical use of my time, but I feel really guilty for it.
And then sometimes I will wake up in the middle of the night and feel almost insane with the desire to study something and instantly I'll no longer be tired. Or I'll lay in bed after a long day, having gotten little sleep the night before, but still be unable to fall asleep because I really *really* want to read my biology textbook or something.
And right now, I should be studying math, but I did my reading for a class that isn't due for *weeks*! I finished the entire book! Math is tomorrow! I really want to study biology, now, too, but I know I shouldn't because that isn't nearly as imminent! I wonder if I'll ever get this straightened out. :(
So, it's 3. I've been up for about an hour. I decided last night to try and go to bed early so that I'd wake up earlier, and um, well. I guess I did! I was planning on getting up at 4, but I guess 2 works, too. :|
I wanted to study study study for a cell & molecular test I have tomorrow and work on some other things until math class this morning, but I just got an email letting me know that my math class is canceled this entire week! :D Hooray!
I still need to at least show my face at work this morning some time and hand in my time-sheet that's due today, but that's it.
Hopefully this means I'll be prepared for my test and I can catch up a little on commissions while hanging out at home!
PS: I am obsessed with this little Myndology study cards. Has anyone ever used them? They're basically notecards on a ring and they have a little pretty outside covering that comes in a variety of colors. I used to just use index cards but, you know, they fly everywhere, they're quite big, they aren't very nice to look at or try to organize, etc. I wholeheartedly recommend these things. I'm going to go finish filling one up now with information about DNA replication. :
Current Mood: amused
Current Location:United States, Pennsylvania, Bradford
Also my Pokemon card list is really out of date now and I don't know when I'll feel like bothering to update it, so I guess if you are interested in them you should ask me if I have something or not until I don't feel guilty about playing with them anymore in lieu of having a thousand things to do for school.
I'm getting tired of skirting the issue or pretending its not as intrusive as it actually is.
I've been seeing our campus psychologist for the past couple of weeks and we've started to discuss a lot of things, especially pertaining to some of my problems with organizing (which are not the normal sorts of problems people have with organization) and it's made me really start to accept the fact that I cannot keep hiding these things from everyone.
We've talked about OCPD, which someone suggested I look into before I had even gone to see her, and which turns out to be spot-on with the issues I have. There was a list of diagnostic criteria (one of those lists where you have to fit like 4 or more in order to be diagnosed) and I literally fit all of them.
A preoccupation with details, rules, lists, order, organization, or schedules to the extent that the major point of the exercise is lost.
Shows perfectionism that interferes with task completion ( i.e., is unable to complete a project because his or her own overly strict standards are not met.)
Is excessively preoccupied with work and productivity to the exclusion of most leisure activities and friendship. This preoccupation is unrelated to economic need.
The person is overly conscientious, scrupulous, and inflexible about matters of morality, ethics or personal values. This is not related to cultural or religious norms.
Is unable to discard worn-out or worthless objects even when they have no sentimental value.
Is reluctant to delegate tasks or to work with others unless they agree to do the task in the manner required by the sufferer.
Has a miserly approach to spending and questions the spending habits of those under his or her control. Money is viewed as something to be hoarded for future catastrophes.
Displays extreme stubbornness and rigidity in all activities.
The only two that I don't fit actually to a T (but do come into it at times anyway) are the keeping non-sentimental items and hoarding money. The only reason I think that I DON'T keep items in that way is because I would not be able to have a picture-perfect space if I kept old things around -- although that isn't to say that I haven't done it in the past and may not in the future. I just do my best to hide them or put them away in such a way that it still looks presentable. The money thing doesn't fit as I will often spend large amounts of money on things that I can play with and organize in ways that make me feel better. Case in point: Pokemon cards. Biggest motivating factor in buying them is so I can list and organize them. No joke. BUT, again, I do have at least hundreds of dollars in cash kept in various places because I am paranoid about money. I am so paranoid about it that I pretend it doesn't exist because I'm afraid I'll spend it. :| I think I have like $300-400 in my closet at my mother's house because I know that I can't get to it to spend it lolololol.
But the things that really kill me is the folding and refolding of clothes, the recopying of notes (I was trying to have a discussion about these things with my mother and she said, "Oh, well, I guess that would explain all of the money you demanded I spend on you for school supplies. You would have stacks of barely used notebooks in your closet and still demand new ones and it would make me so upset." The reason for that being that, fuck, if the notebook is supposed to have 70 pages and I screwed up my notes in some way that I don't like and I feel the need to recopy them, I CAN'T JUST TEAR THEM OUT AND USE A NEW NOTEBOOK. That would make the page number wrong. :<
I catalog and recatalog my books obsessively, on librarything.com for example. I bought a little electronic scanner to plug into my lappy so that I can just scan barcodes because I have over 1300 books and I just can't do it manually anymore.
SIGH.
So, that's some of what has been on my mind lately and why I am dropping at least my two biology courses and maybe my anthropology course. I feel like I'm going nuts and nothing is ever good enough for me.
I think I am literally still upset because I got my first-ever A-s last semester after maintaining a 4.0 throughout all of college. It's really hurt me. It's fucked me up. I feel like I was completely thrown off.
So, I'm going to make this entry to help organize myself real quick and give whoever actually checks in on this journal a bit of an update.
1. I moved in with Arpad, and that's been going well. I like Bradford, for the most part, and rather than just being irritating the snow is actually sort of pretty. It hasn't really gotten old yet (I'm sure the recent acquisition of warmer clothes has helped that). We all actually prefer the snow over just cold dead ground, and we're in the middle of a pretty impressive snowstorm right now. The weather here hasn't gotten me down nearly as much as the much less severe weather in Clarion had been all fall semester. I really thought I was having some sort of reaction to the season -- or some sort of seasonal depression or something, because I was feeling quite unmotivated and down for a long time. Probably since September. I'm fine here, though. The companionship is probably helping. I'm grateful for that.
2. Classes start again on the 6th (which is a Wednesday). I managed to ace all of my classes this past semester and I am SO SO SO SO HAPPY. HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY. Did I mention I was happy? Not that my grade point average transfers over (as I found out) but my Clarion transcript is accessible and that will certainly aid me when I apply to a graduate program in the next couple of years (probably less time than that now - eesh). If I'm lucky I can maintain my four-oh at Bradford, but I'm not holding my breath on that. For one, they implement a scale of grading that incorporates A-minuses and the like into their system. I know for sure that some of my As at Clarion would have been A-minuses at Bradford. I guess that just means I have to work harder? For one thing, this obsession about maintaining my GPA has pushed me and as much stress as it causes me now, I'm sure I'll be happy about it years from now. Even if I don't graduate with a 4.0, my GPA should remain high and that can really only do good things for me.
3. Looks like there is little preventing me from studying abroad next year, aside from my own anxiety. I spoke to the lady at Bradford that coordinates study abroad for students and spoke to her about wanting to go to Australia. She sent me information about it, and the only thing that seemed to be standing in my way (read: money) seems to be a non-issue. Even without scholarships (which I am not counting out) I should be able to go on my current aid. I'm going to try and save up as much money as I can though. How much it will cost depends on where I go, of course, but having been researching my options through various programs the past week or so, I really think I'd prefer to go to Sydney. However, even more than that, how long should I go? Their school year starts in February. I can either go for a semester or a year. Feel free to make a pro and con list for me if you feel up to it!
So, what do I have to do before classes start again?
1. Get a relatively larger chunk of commissions done. I'm over halfway done with the Skittle wolf commission I am doing. It's turning out beautifully and I'm quite proud, but I'd like for my work load to lesson as the semester starts so that I can feel less guilty about focusing on my studies. Perhaps I'll be getting a job at the library, too, so that will eat up some of my time as well. I desperately need the money though.
2. Figure out a way to buy my textbooks. Good luck on this one, I say to myself~~~.
3. Call up the scary PHEAA robot lady on the phone to try and get them to transfer my state grant to Bradford. For fuck's sake. Did I mention that I called them up last week, was on the phone with a robot lady for EVER, got exasperated and shouted at it --
Me: CAN I JUST SPEAK TO A REAL PERSON, PLEASE? Robot: Please wait one moment while I get someone on the line.
So that scared the unholy shit out of me. Anyway.
4. Mail out books, mail out completed commissions. Not a real issue besides the fact that Bradford is buried in snow at the moment and I am at the mercy of the car.
Other aggravations include Arpad's grandparents. His grandfather is lovely. It's his grandmother that is horrible. She's had advanced Alzheimer's for quite some time now is absolutely impossible. She wasn't exactly a wonderful person in her pre-crazy days, either, but now she's simply intolerable. Arpad is losing his mind over it, as is his mother, and I'm not fairing too well, either. She is all but incontinent, completely insane (and sometimes violent!) and has a habit of just throwing things in the garbage. I hope they leave soon because I know we're all getting a bit twitchy over it. I still cannot find my favorite necklace and I suspect that after they leave we will be searching all of the trash that we've made since they've been here. Sigh.
She keeps leaving the shaped sugar cookies left over from Christmas in strange places though, and that's been sort of amusing. Found a red and white-frosted Santa riding the ceramic rooster yesterday.
I am getting my shit together in this post. To-do list time!
Classes: Psychology - . study for test on Friday using study guides . complete quiz online before Friday and post on discussion board . catch up with reading
Anthropology - . catch up with reading
Biology - . study ass off for test on the 30th (MY BIRTHDAY, UGH) . catch up with reading
Modern British Literature - . finish reading Howards End (oops) . read article in back of Howards End . finish reading for A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
Civil War & Reconstruction - . do reading . do reading analysis . finish reading The March
Transfer Application Stuff: . write essay . send in application . remember to add Bradford to FAFSA
Note: Did you guys know that Pitt-Bradford lets you talk to the admissions counselors over AIM? What the fuck? What sort of crazy college is this? I IM'd the transfer application lady, she pulled my files, told me what I needed to do and then waived my application fee.
So, we are starting to read Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man in class this week and I am just TOO EXCITED ABOUT IT. I wanted to start re-reading it tonight but I wouldn't put it down and then I wouldn't sleep and then 9:30 Civil War & Reconstruction class tomorrow morning would be miserable.
I'm so glad it's almost over and I'll have the summer to get into my normal... well... routine. Which is mostly made of up reading and crocheting and studying things that I'm interested in.
Which reminds me - now I can start taking commissions again and they will no longer be delayed starting the end of this month. You can look here for examples if anyone is interested: http://wombatboi.deviantart.com but I'll be moving all of my commission information to my main site soon so that's just a temporary/old link with examples already posted... so it's useful until the summer if you want to ask for something now.
Or, you can just make something up and ask me if I can do it. I probably can if it involves yarn and a hook. ;)
I'm almost finished with an outstanding commission I had from last summer (oy vey) once I get the eyes in the mail which I believe have already been shipped. I went ahead and ordered a bunch of other eyes along with that one so I don't have to wait on shipping if anyone needs any cats, I got a bunch of cat eyes.
Oh hm. What else? I have a huge project coming up on Wednesday in which my group must essentially teach the class about Oscar Wilde for 50 minutes (insert small panic attack here). I also have another huge project where I lecture ANOTHER class about Women & Gothic Literature. And then, you know, a million finals. I'm just glad I finished my transfer applications - they were taking up SO much of my free/leisure time this year. Ugh. So at least next year when I come back it'll at least SEEM easier because I won't be doing those, wherever I wind up.
I'm glad that the semester is drawing down to a close, because I have been dying lately for some real free time. I just want to sleep all day and read and do whatever I want. The school work isn't that much fun any more, the major projects are coming up and I'm starting to stress about final grades, even though I think, for the most part, I'm doing alright.
I got a B- on an essay that I turned in for Dr. Downes. I'm able to turn in a second essay so that both are worth 10 percent of my grade instead of 20 percent, but I'm having just the worst time writing it out and she's already giving me an extension because it took her so long to grade my last one. I guess I'm going to do it, just because I really want to get an A in that class. She's off at a conference this week so I get the week off of Downes classes.
Let's see... I have to do these online quizzes for Sociology, I'm GOING to start those tonight. They're a huge pain in the ass. I have to do more reading for my group project for Literature & Sexualities. I can't think of anything else I have to do for American Lit right now. Reading for Intro and studying - I guess - for American History, although I have gotten a 98 and a 100 on my last two tests and I haven't before, so... I don't plan on devoting a whole lot of my time to that. :D
Eventually there is going to be a presentation due for Intro and I'm scared about that, I'm not even going to think about it yet. :[
Sigh.
Off to American History in a little bit. I have a 2 o'clock class. Dr. Kennedy is turning into one of my favorite professors. She is SO quirky and adorable and nice.
I've been feeling really amazing for the past few days. I think a lot of it has to do with the weather, and then today, I finally picked up my withdrawal slip for my math course which is a big load off my shoulders as it's just been torturous for me from the start. It's sad, really, because it's such a low-level math course that it doesn't even count for credit - yet I really can't do it. It's like all of my brain cells picked up and moved over to the wordsy side of my brain and the number side is all full of cobwebs and crumbs and stuff. It's useless for me to keep trying, at this point, I guess is what I'm saying - especially with the amount of attention I'm focusing on my other classes because I enjoy them so much.
I'm meeting up with my group at 8 at the library to work on our project for ENG 266. That should be fun, as our topic is Oscar Wilde. The rest of the week seems really relaxing for me, for the most part. We're going to Altoona for the weekend to get my new cell phone (Lee's old one) and then I have a large paper due on Monday that I'm not really concerned about. I'd like to finish it before the weekend, though.
Oh no. T_T I'm so sorry. Agh. My brain has really not been functioning correctly lately, I screwed up. I would offer to send you the right one for free but shipping was actually a little more than I…
Hiya, I got the calendar pages today, thank you! c: It seems you accidentally sent me the one with Samurott, Serperior and Emboar when I was asking for the one with the middle evos, though. ;;
