that's that then
I came, I dmf'd, I raved until donuts. There weren't many left there from the old crowd, but that's the way it is in college towns. Everyone's moved on to warmer places and grownup pastimes. I realized as I walked there that I really hadn't changed at all since the last time I was at dmf. Same weight, same clothes, same general job, same general feeling that I should be trying to pick someone up there but not to the extent that I could be bothered to talk to a stranger. Same narcotic hankering for an internet connection as I walked in the door, but remembered from when it was new instead of part of me. Some things do change; no need to fuss with the terminals outside the club, I got a Blackberry from work today so I have my net drip 24/7 now. It did remind me that I need to find a way to hook up a VT320. It won't be quite the same, but it will feel close enough.

The music was, as it must be, the same, and the great dilemma of the evening was who got to play Blue Monday. I thought about dancing, but decided that there wasn't a real reason to start now. I had a beer there; it was sacralicious. So I sat and I remembered the good times there and talked to the few old time stragglers who made it, and watched the nameless college crowd drift in and out, same as always, one last time before it all comes down, then off through the falling snow for donuts and home.

Bye dmf.

dmf djs of yore?
Does anyone know if Nick Nice or Mike Carlson ever djed at dmf? The music committee is working on one last dance party in an old school (aka dmf) vs new school (indie queer) mashup night and I just wanted to make sure that the old school djs they were considering had actually spun at ye olde dmf. I'm drawing a blank.

Old Photos?
Anyone have any old dmf photos digitized that they're willing to share? Wisconsin Week is on the hunt for some "vintage" shots for an article about the demise of the current Union South building. I have to dig through my photo boxes this weekend to see what I can come up with...

On that note, anyone want to get together for a dmf reunion before they tear the place down? Decomissioning starts in January...

still want DMF memories from people
i haven't given up on this project, although you may have given up on me :)
got some unexpected free time and am trying to wrap this all up.

i'm still looking for DMF memories from people. in particular, bodyfour, nulldevice, scrotasticfurry, scarymike ... you were there in the early days. a sentence or two will do...something that you remember about DMF. i'm putting together a set of liner notes.

thanks to everyone that already did submit something to me!

hello, hello? is this thing on?
hey DMFers.

maybe THAT will get your attention.

i posted this last week but clearly everyone's too busy blowing your economic stimulus checks on women and booze to read LJ and notice. i'm trying to put the finishing touches on the CDs and get them done within a couple weeks.

looking for your memories. just one short memory of something about DMF...it could be an event, a reflection or just a quick thought. for example: i remember we made Kool-Aid in a fishtank. 'cause that's all we had for a large container.

i've got some from gnat23 and Sean L (only because i talked to them directly). i need to hear from the rest of you. you want these CDs? throw me a frickin bone here!

don't post responses here. email them to me at (my LJ name) @ livejournal.com. send your thought in by the end of next week! thanks! if a week goes by without hearing from anyone i'm going to pester some of you directly. and you don't want that ;)

a dmf reunion of sorts
So the main industrial promoter in San Francisco called me up the other day:
  • Him: "Hey, do you want to DJ at the Seabound/Iris show?"
  • Me: "Thanks, but I'm still retired"
  • Him: "You sure? I got Ned to do it"
Ned will be on tour with Iris. After the Seabound/Iris show we'll be doing an afterparty. Ned and I will be DJing together for the first time since..uhm.. 1995 I guess.

Life is weird.

ps: Ned will also be playing SF with Stromkern a few days later.

hooray for Illustrator's autotrace
back when i MADE this logo, Illustrator's autotrace feature kinda sucked.

at least now in CS3 they've got it working pretty damn well. i went through my hard copies of dmf flyers and luckily i had thought to print out a large, solid black hard copy of the logo which made a great template for tracing.

( not perfect, but close enough...Collapse )

update: DMF graphics?
okay, i had a look at the old DMF server, and i'm not finding what i'm looking for...basically i just want the logo, preferably in EPS format. anyone have that around somewhere? otherwise i managed to find a "clean" hard copy i can scan and trace.

work and school have pulled me away from this project, but the track listing is 99% final and i'm itching to get this bad boy rolled out.

i've been thinking of making this available in 2 formats:

1. a collection of MP3s. this is the "free" version that you'll be able to download. i've had a gracious offer for hosting space (thanks Chuck) for these. most of them will be 192 Kbps original rips, but a few will be transcoded from their DRM'ed files. you shouldn't notice much audio degradation.

if you got the MP3s, would you want me to tag them with info from their original sources? or tag them with the compilation info ("dmf volume 1", etc.)

2. a 5-CD physical disc set. i'll ask for some $ that you can PayPal to me (maybe $10-15) to cover the cost of my time, materials and shipping (if i have to send it to you). the CD inserts will contain original artwork, track listings, and at the very LEAST, the jewel case will contain an original circa 1993 DMF sticker or two. there's some other goodies i'm considering.

would you pay for #2?

dmf - final playlist?
all right, here it is: my near-final playlist for the dmf comps. i went with what i had easy access to and finally drew the line at 5 CDs worth of music. each one PACKS an entire 70-minute CD. disc 5 is a little more on the "rave-ish" side.

edit: what a dummy--i can fit 80 minutes of music on a CD, not 70. so i have room for more...

tracking down tracks
looking for these tracks:

Messiah - Thunderdome (the single edit, not the album version)
808 State - Cubik (nah, gonna use "Timebomb" instead)
Moby - Move (Disco Threat)
Sunscreem --- any recommendations?

a few of these i can find on iTunes...but i'm not thrilled at the prospect of getting DRM'ed files (they're not available as "iTunes Plus").

( and here's the current pool of songs i've collected so far...Collapse )

dmf techno from 1991-1994
a friend recently lost her "mix tape" from back in the days of early DMF. she could only recall a couple of songs that were on it.

we agreed that some CDs of favorite "classic" techno tunes from that era would be fun to put together, to replace her missing tape (she couldn't listen to it anyway, having no cassette player). problem is, my memory's not so good, so i'm having a hard time coming up with any songs outside of my own collection that i'd want to pull together for this project.

anyone have some of the music from those days lying around? or can you remember any songs that are not on my list i should be getting?

as an aside, we'd also love any mixes from the Drop Bass Network from back then.

( my current playlist of the tunes i have in my own collection under the cutCollapse )
edit: ah, i just remembered i have some old Prodigy and Moby to add to that list....

An inadvertant time capsule
I've put the recovered contents of the public dmf site up for your enjoyment. The Union apparently continued to use the server through 2001, and most of the good stuff is hidden away in subdirectories. Directory indexes have been enabled to ease exploration.

Of memorable note, flyers, stickers, ads, and photos.

Personal directories aren't anywhere public, nor do I plan to make them so.

Atari?
Hey, does anyone want to lay claim to the Atari set we were using at dmf roughly around 96-97 or later? It's in JZ's basement at the moment and she'd like to get it back to the rightful owner. I've emailed Mitch & Besh to see if either of them lay claim to it. Anyone else got any ideas?

Hey look what I found!
Circa 1995...
"Build Your Own Blue Monday Remix"

aaaaannnnddd...

A Night at dmf!

Yes, it's really antediluvian shockwave, done in glorious 4-bit color or whatever, heavily compressed for 1995's high-speed 14.4 modems...

Welcome
So. Unfortunately, most of my digital files went the way of a zip-drive death. I can scan in some hard copy photos, tho!

What else have we got?
