Dr. Phil has violated the HIPAA law. [10 Jan 2008|11:25am]

For a man who calls himself Dr., (He has a Doctorate in psychology, so yes he is a real Dr. academically), he doesn’t seem to know the first thing about HIPAA, the federal law also know as the Heath Insurance Portability and Accountability Act passed into law in 1996 which clearly states that you can not go around revealing PHI or Personal Health Information without a release from the patient. We have all signed this document when visiting a real Doctor for the first time. Since Dr. Phil has license to diagnosis illness, in this case, the mental health of one Brittney Spears, it is completely inappropriate and illegal and subject to sanctions. What ever those penalties are, they should be applied by the patient herself and possibly her family who consulted with him. No matter what anyone thinks of Ms. Spears, Dr. Phil has no right to release PHI on anyone to any media without consent to do so. Simple fact, Dr. Phil has gotten too big for his britches. I never fell for his method of popular psychology. Seems he and Brittney have more in common than I might have imagined. She produces pop and so does he.

Has anyone been on Dr. Phil or knows someone that has? I am interested in knowing about the process for a project that I am doing for my psychology class. Thanks; I know it is a long shot!

Hello everyone, I can't believe I didn't think to find this community earlier! My husband and I were on the Dr. Phil show, and it's airing on Monday! We're the couple fighting over when to have a baby. They've been showing commercials for it lately, and we're on the front page of the website. So exciting!

Would anyone happen to know a good site about Dr. Phil and his background?

I've been trying to find how many siblings he has and who his parents were, but to no luck.

Any help is much appreciated. :)

today's show [07 Oct 2005|05:08pm]

Anti-breastfeeding woman was really offensive. I can't imagine what kind of cold-hearted, sick-minded, uninformed person could really think those things.
Babies need to eat, I don't know why anyone would rather hear a screaming baby than catch a glimpse of someone breastfeeding.
I have a 16-month-old who breastfeeds and it is not always easy to be discreet. I am modest and aware of getting dirty looks so I do go to my car or a corner somewhere when it's not a big hassle. It is virtually impossible to avoid public breastfeeding. Up until my daughter was a couple months old all she did was nurse and sleep. I didn't have a choice. When babies get older they kick blankets off and look up every 30 seconds to see what's going on around them. It's impossible to be completely covered all the time. It is possible that someone will see a breast. And that should be ok in that context.
The social pressure to not breastfeed in public because it's "unattractive" is a big reason why women don't breastfeed, wean before they should, or supplement with formula.
I can't help but sometimes feel embarrassed when I breastfeed in public but I hope too to normalize it. America needs to get over this for the sake of public health.

I totally agree that that lady was sick. "i hate everyone, i'm not prejudice it's just everyone pisses me off." uggh! That lady crossed the line between discipline and kinda trickled into abuse.

I wanted to run and post this yesterday..

Yesterday's (Monday's) show blew my mind.

I cannot see how a mother can treat her kids the way this woman did.
The hour was over and I was waiting on Dr. Phil to step up and set this woman straight and she wouldn't hear anything he said. I was a little disappointed there wasn't any more resolution, but they will make a good follow up story. I just hope she is away from the kids for a while!!!

Beauty. How important is it, really? [16 Sep 2005|05:20pm]

jaded_butterfly
Wow.

What a person she is. On Dr Phil today.

I know from experience that beauty is on the inside. When I first met my girlfriend I was not at ALL attracted to her. Now, I can't keep my eyes of her. She's the most beautiful woman I know.

I think what's wrong with America is that we all KNOW we have a superficial obsession with beauty, yet not a lot of people are doing anything to CHANGE that obsession...

A note on medicating children with ADD & Another on education... [14 Sep 2005|02:40am]

[ mood | quixotic ]

A note on medicating children with ADD:

I was diagnosed at age 7 with ADD, borderline hyperacte. As a result, they attempted Ritalin, but it didn't really help. Instead, they gave me Dexedrine. For those of you for whom that word does not immediately bring visions, let me explain. Dexedrine is prescription grade speed, plain and simple. It is what models used to be prescribed by their 'doctors' in the 70's. It is what was in Dexatrim before they were forced to change the formula. Hence the similarity in name.

According to the complaints from friends and relatives my age, it was horrible. I became a 'zombie'. They all actively advocated me skipping my pills. I ought to have listened. Not only was this claim true, but I believe that the speed prescribed to me for so many years had much worse effects than this. For one, I became incredibly depressed at the onset of puberty, including suicide attempts. I believe this happened when I outgrew the hyperactivity which the speed was suppressing. Oh, BTW, this is one way you are supposed to be able to diagnose ADHD--uppers work like downers, downers like uppers. This is because, as it was explained to me, sufferers become hyper in order to avoid falling asleep. This extreme lethargy against which they fight is, apparently, brought on by the overworking of the mind, as it races a million miles an hour faster than the brains of others. Second, I developed a gigantic pituitary tumor, which grew much larger and faster than it had any right to, until it was a whopping 4"x4"x2"... just in the parts they could see in a mass. When all tendrils and such were put together, it was closer to 6"x4"x4". As a note, most pituitary tumors are not found until an incidental (unrelated) autopsy, and never have any real effect. Nor do they generally become larger than golf balls. I'm, apparently, special. I think it quite the coincidence that the tumor formed and grew the way, and at the time, that it did. The doctors estimated it had been there for at least 12 years. I was 24 when it was finally discovered. I didn't finally refuse to continue taking my Dexedrine until I was 13 or 14.

Another point about ADHD which I don't think is considered today, is that (according to my psych professionals as a child) you must have a high- to genius- level IQ in order to have ADHD/ADD/AADD. What I have come to realize, however, is that ADHD is a handy way of coming up with a diagnosis for boredom (and resultant acting out), so that it can be medicated.

You see, prescriptions must have a diagnosis code attached to them in order to be valid as pharmaceuticals according to the governmental bodies which control such things, and to be paid by insurance (I'd need a whole other post to get into this). You can't drug your hyper-intelligent child so that they conform to the standards of behavior for public schools, while bored out of their mind due to a need for faster movement through the educational rigors and more advanced work than their fellow classmates... unless you have a valid diagnosis code to use with it. Enter ADHD/ADD.

Now, don't get me wrong, ADD is real. However! ADD is also way over-diagnosed, and is being looked at as a disability incorrectly. It is not, in fact, a disability. It is a hyper-ability which is under-served by the limits of our current public education system. It is, quite simply, as I stated previously, the result of boredom. The lack of challenge. The lack of interest.

A plan for education in the future:

It seems to me, and has for quite some time now, that the public education system needs a complete overhaul. In a sense, we need to take a step backwards, but slightly to the side.

Way back whe, we had multiple ages/grades in one classroom, you see. I think we need to go back to this.

Forget age defining grade level. Look how many dropouts and ineffective educations this has given us. My... concept consists of a classroom defined by learning level, not necessarily age.

Under my system, children would first be tested, around ages 3-5 for a basic skill set. Based on this measurement, they are placed in school, or continue with pre-school level education to establish basic reading, writing and speech skills. Once they are ready, they then move on to the next 'grade level', where they learn another set of skills at certain levels. If this takes them more than one year, so be it. One might institute a rough age limit, at which a student is simply passed on or moved into some alternative remedial/counseling system for each of these 'grades'. That would be worked out in future. If so, the rough divisions would be ages 3-6, 7-11, 12-15, 16-21, or thereabouts, as I've defined them in my thoughts. Also, school would be year round, four-six days per week, 8 hours a day (roughly). We no longer need summers off to assist our parents with the harvest, in most cases. In the others, my father has a plan for that, involving an entire sociopolitical idea which he has worked out for aspects of the adult population, which I will not get into here, having enough to fill your screens with.

In these small divisions of population, the children would study at the given level of knowledge until they had fully grasped all concepts, or until the implementation of any alternate plan for remedial education which might come into play at a given age. They would then graduate, immediately, into the next level, and so on. The hope of this plan is that one would reach their full potential by age 21 as far as basic education goes, before moving on to the college level for career training and scholarly pursuits in colleges and universities. Likely, at some point in the process, the child would have developed an affinity for a certain line of education and thought, and the system could be adapted to contain rough tracks for these leanings, to help usher the child into their chosen field(s), or to test out these fields more fully before giving their life and future to its study.

Anyway, that's just a very rough, semi-stream-of-consciousness diatribe. Feel free to ask questions, or offer commentary.

Have to share [05 Jun 2005|01:05pm]

[ mood | amused ]

I had a dream last night that I was on the Dr. Phil show. I think I was flown in because of winning a contest or something. He showed pictures of these people who were being stalked and I said to him "But the stalkers will be able to see them on TV!" He told me "NO, we have this new technology that when you watch this show, the people's pictures will be distored." (Very odd).

Then he offered to have me as a guest. I told him I wanted to do a show on pregnancy and depression. He asked me what I would say and I told him. He said that Tom Cruise would be on the show. And I told him that I would tell Tom Cruise that he was full off S@@@! I would say that Scientology was Bull and "Emotionally, I feel that Tom Cruise is an idiot. But since he believes in Scientology I can say that logically I KNOW that Tom Cruise is an idiot."

I found the dream rather funny.

I finally dissagreed with something Dr Phil said. I don't think he should have told the young lady on monday to comprimise with her mother on what sports she plays. I believe that if she is really good at football she should play football. The boys may be getting bigger, but already she had proven her talent as a football player, so why make her stop playing? I can understand the mother's concern, but once she's out of high school and college she's going to have a hard time finding a sports team to play on, so this is her only real chance to PLAY football. Besides, who's to say she couldn't get a football scholarship?

Helping People [29 May 2005|12:05pm]

Why is it that most everyone who Dr. Phil puts on the show is white upper-middle class and can afford the expensive help that he gives them? Yes, I've seen poor people receive some great things from Dr. Phil, but I'm referring, namely, to the Dr. Phil family (Alex's family...don't remember their last name). They obviously live a comfortable, relatively wealthy existence, yet Dr. Phil spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on trips, baby things, therapy....everything. I was amazed. It seems that Dr. Phil mostly puts on guests that 1) Look good on TV (god forbid the housewives who watch his show should run away because someone doesn't fit the "made for TV" physical image) and 2) Are wealthy enough to afford the resources that he gives them for free. What do you all think?

My apologies if I offended anyone with my last post (and judging from your comments, I think I did), and I hope I didn't come off as a total jackass.

So...Mickai (sp?) is back on the show tommorow (I think tommorow?). The guy who 'fessed up to molesting his little sister, yeah. It will be interesting to see what the mother has to apologize for, and I hope he got better from his time in treatment.
