Favorite Game Mechanics?

I love the soul points from Dead Inside. You can use them to fuel magical effects in the Spirit World ... or to reassemble your broken soul. It creates an inherent conflict of interest between those actions. You earn them by doing soul-healing actions. The structure of the game itself relates directly to its end goal.
Call to Adventure is a board game rather than a roleplaying game, but has two mechanics I love. One is the rune tiles, which you toss instead of dice -- basically a set of d2 tiles with different risks and benefits. Another is that failing a challenge isn't a pure loss; you get an experience point just for trying, which encourages you to take heroic risks.
