I'm Joe, one of the new wave of Pillowfort Refugees

So, trying to find a way to make things more manageable I have set up my first community here on Dreamwidth:

Our Modern Times

This is so current events (politics, wars, scandals etc.) that I would have covered back on Pillowfort in a separate community to avoid causing anxiety or triggers for folks that are have issues can avoid such in my own personal journal.

As usual, I have a Liberal, LGBTQIA+ positive and anti-Republican anti-Fascist anti-genocide and Anti-AI Authoritarians tendency on what I cover, post and discuss. I welcome others with like interests that want to join the community (it's set to open at present) but you can also choose to not join if its likely to cause you anxiety, distress or you just want to ignore these things right now.

I mostly post links to Youtube videos, articles from legitimate sources (not the Trumpie controlled news outlets but respected professional journals, newspapers, and the occasional commentator that I consider reliable in their analysis of things).

I post to inform, discuss what is being said to the content, and what folks can share of their own views and other useful material they may have come across.

Welcome to Dreamwidth! You may also be interested in joining [community profile] thisfinecrew which has an overlapping focus with your new comm (more action oriented than informational)

Also re: letting people opt in/out of more sensitive content, that is definitely a great use of communities! You might also want to explore using either dreamwidths native cut function or html summary&details to provide more fine grained opt ins at times (can come back later and post instructions if you’re curious but I’ve gotta run in a minute so I’m posting as is for now 😅)

Welcome! It's great to see new people here on Dreamwidth. I'm old enough to remember the heyday of LiveJournal, and also old enough to now believe we never should have left it for Big Social.

I have no idea what Pillowfort is or why you had to leave, but I hope you find a solid community here - and more importantly, can help build it! Thanks for putting this new community together. I look forward to reading your posts.

I lost a lot of friends and community during that initial LJ exodus. Most of them fled to Facebook (it was the style at the time), so I reluctantly followed in an attempt to keep up with friends from school and others I'd met via LJ itself. I was partially successful, but Facebook never really sat right with me. It was...fine. Cromulent. But it lacked a lot of what made social blogging sites special.

Now that we've seen what Big Social has wrought, I find myself regretting that I got involved with it in the first place. I did so out of necessity - it was either that or lose contact with some people - but I finally made a Dreamwidth account a few years ago so I could make a blog without also having to build a website. It's nice to be back in a place where I can write at length, but I've had no luck convincing my friends to set up shop here. I guess it's right back to the beginning!

I mean, the last I checked LJ had banned all queer and trans content - we didn't have a choice.

(Though I understand the distaste for many social media sites, a lot of harm has been caused.)

Allow me to clarify.

I was using LiveJournal in the early 2000s, prior to its sale to Russian interests. At the time, there wasn't a prohibition on LGBTQ+ content. When the sale was announced, I split my time between LiveJournal and MySpace out of necessity - LJ in particular was a lifeline for me during my college and post-college years, as it helped me stay in touch with my college friends during breaks and after graduation. (Many eventually started migrating to MySpace, but still maintained an active presence on LJ due to its communities.) I had to move home at that time, which meant living in a less than ideal situation vis a vis my mother and stepfather. Then one day, I found that many of these people had abruptly left those sites for Facebook and Twitter. That fracture made it more difficult to keep up with people who had been instrumental in my development, which in turn led to a prolonged period of isolation that has persisted until today. When I said, "I am old enough to now believe we never should have left it for Big Social," what I meant was, "I miss the days when social media allowed me to stay in touch with people dear to me. I miss the days when social media allowed me to have more nuanced discussions with people and communities that I never would have encountered in my hometown at that time. I miss when scrolling led to discovery rather than a constant onslaught of ads for products I don't need made with AI technology I despise. I wax nostalgic for a time when these sites weren't owned by people who belong to the Rationalism death cult and want to bring about a new age of feudalism with even fewer rights for the peasantry."

I am sensitive to the fact that many people had to leave LJ because of homophobic and transphobic policies, but I don't appreciate your flippancy and presumed condemnation of what was meant to be a lighthearted statement on my part. It reads as churlish, especially since my initial comment wasn't directed at you and did nothing to belittle members of the LGBTQ+ community for their experiences.
