The Al-Andalusía Islamic University of Spain (Spanish: Universidad Islámica de España Al-Andalusía) is an Islamic-based private higher education institution based in Seville, Andalusia, Spain.[2] This university is the result of the development of the Al-Andalusía Higher Institute of Islamic Sciences of Spain which was initiated by local Islamic scholar, Mohammad Idrissi Alcaraz.[3] Since its founding, this institution has been known as the first Islamic university to operate physically in the Iberian Peninsula after a period of more than 700 years since the collapse of the Al-Andalus civilization.[1][4]
History
[edit]Before establishing an independent university complex, this institution had been providing distance learning (online) for over six years for Spanish-speaking Muslim communities in various countries.[1] The parent institution developed gradually starting from elementary, secondary, to civil service institute levels which will produce the first class of official Islamic religious teachers in Spain in 2023.[5][6]
In 2025, the university launched a €2 million international fundraising project to acquire land and build a permanent campus building in Seville.[1] The construction of this physical campus aims to facilitate regular classrooms, student accommodation, as well as integrated worship facilities to support direct teaching of sharia knowledge in the European region.[7][4]
Academics
[edit]The Al-Andalusía Islamic University of Spain integrates a traditional Islamic studies curriculum with modern European academic methodology.[2] The main teaching system is delivered in Spanish and Arabic, with plans to expand the study program in English.[1]
This institution offers undergraduate (strata-1) and master (strata-2) programs, as well as various diploma courses, which are divided into several main academic units, namely:[8]
- Faculty of Theology and Islamic Sciences
- Faculty of Koranic Sciences
- Faculty of Arts and Humanities
- Center for Andalusian Cultural Studies
By 2025, the university is expected to serve more than 600 active students from 22 countries, including Europe and Muslim communities in Latin America.[1][6]
