Welcome!

Now, in December 2025, Women in Red is completing our third collective "alphabet run", where editors work consecutively through the letters of the English alphabet. The December letters are X, Yand Z, and can be applied to any given name, middle name, or surname of a subject, e.g. Yoshiko Yamaguchi (both names), Zora Cross (first name), or Malala Yousafzai (last name).

Again this year we have lists of the most frequently redlisted women. Based on database searches, these are listed under the first name in the article title. As the searches take account of women's given names, you will discover quite a number that are inappropriate, for example, people named Yuri which is for men and also names of geographical features. If you write a biography from these lists, please mention "most frequent" when you add it as a New or upgraded article.

We hope both inexperienced and seasoned editors will join us in creating biographies and other articles about notable women.

This virtual editathon allows enthusiasts wherever you may be to participate in our initiative. Contributors are, of course, also welcome to add articles on any other women who deserve to be covered, under our year-long initiative Music, other topics of the month or our comprehensive #1day1woman event.

The main goals of the event are:

  • to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating biographies of prominent women
  • to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works
  • to promote the new and improved articles and images through social media

What else?

  • Below, you'll see a section where you can list the articles you created this month and another section where you can add the images you have uploaded to Commons.
  • If you share any of the articles or images on social media, please indicate you have done so next to the article name.
Thank you!

Redlists (lists of redlinked articles to be created)

[edit]

A wide variety of redlink lists can be found on our Redlist index. Any of these lists can be used to find subjects who may have a first, middle or last name, beginning with X, Y or Z. Editors can click the column header to rearrange names into alphabetical order.

There are a wide variety of dictionaries and other reference works available, some that editors might consider are:
