      Etymology

      [edit]

Internationalism, ultimately from Medieval Latin Serbia (Serbia). The name belongs to the same word family as Serbo-Croatian Ср̏бин (Serb) and ultimately continues Proto-Slavic *sьrbъ (Serb; Sorb). The Proto-Slavic ethnonym has been connected with Proto-Indo-European *ser- (to protect, watch over), though its deeper origin remains uncertain.

Compare Serbo-Croatian Ср̀бија (Serbia). Parallel international forms include Norwegian Nynorsk Serbia, Danish Serbien, Swedish Serbien, German Serbien, Dutch Servië, French Serbie, Italian Serbia, Spanish Serbia, Portuguese Sérvia, Polish Serbia, Romanian Serbia and English Serbia.
