Patrick Scott Druckenmiller est un paléontologue américain, spécialiste du Mésozoïque, taxonomiste, professeur assistant de géologie, conservateur en sciences de la Terre et directeur du musée[1],[2] de l'University of Alaska Museum of the North (en), où il supervise la plus vaste collection unique de fossiles d'invertébrés et de vertébrés d'Alaska[3]. Il a publié des travaux sur les plésiosaures[4],[5],[6], les ichthyosaures[7],[8],[9], les mastodontes[10] et les dinosaures[11],[12],[13] aux États-Unis, au Svalbard et au Canada. Il a coécrit des articles portant sur les extinctions de masse[14] et la biogéographie. Une grande partie de ses travaux porte sur les espèces arctiques[15]. Il est membre du groupe de recherche « Spitsbergen Jurassic Research », qui se consacre aux reptiles marins[16].
Formation
[modifier | modifier le code]Druckenmiller occupe les fonctions de conservateur et de membre du corps professoral à l'Université de l'Alaska à Fairbanks depuis . Avant de s'installer en Alaska, il a travaillé au Museum of the Rockies à Bozeman, dans le Montana. Il est titulaire d'un doctorat de l'Université de Calgary (Alberta) et d'une maîtrise de la Montana State University (Bozeman), où il a travaillé sous la direction du paléontologue Jack Horner[17].
Recherche dans l'Arctique
[modifier | modifier le code]Une grande partie des travaux de Druckenmiller porte sur des animaux préhistoriques des hautes latitudes adaptés aux climats froids[18]. En , avec l'un de ses étudiants, il a nommé une nouvelle espèce de dinosaure herbivore à bec de canard, Ugrunaaluk kuukpikensis[19], qui vivait apparemment toute l'année dans l'Arctique enneigé[20]. Ses recherches dans l'Arctique ont attiré l'attention de National Geographic, qui a écrit à propos d'Ugrunaaluk : « L'image de tyrannosaures, de dinosaures à cornes et d'hadrosaures parcourant les forêts fraîches de l'Alaska d'autrefois va tellement à l'encontre de l'imagerie classique du Mésozoïque qu'il n'est pas surprenant que cet environnement ait fait l'objet de plusieurs documentaires récents et même d'un long métrage »[19].
Druckenmiller a beaucoup travaillé sur les ichnofossiles[21], notamment sur des sites d'empreintes fossiles dans le parc national de Denali et au Svalbard[22]. Druckenmiller a lancé un projet de cinq ans à Denali, en partenariat avec le Service des parcs nationaux, pour étudier les dinosaures polaires de la région. Dans le cadre de ce projet, ils ont découvert le premier os fossilisé du parc[23].
Druckenmiller a également étudié de manière approfondie les reptiles marins des hautes latitudes, décrivant plusieurs nouvelles espèces. Parmi celles-ci figurent le thalattosaurien Gunakadeit joseeae (issu de la formation volcanique de Hound Island, en Alaska)[24], le plésiosaure Edgarosaurus muddi (formation de Thermopolis Shale, Montana)[25], les plésiosaures Nichollssaura borealis[26] et Wapuskanectes betsynichollsae[27], l'ichtyosaure Athabascasaurus bitumineus (formation de Clearwater, Alberta)[28], ainsi que les plésiosaures Ophthalmothule cryostea[29], Djupedalia engeri[30], Spitrasaurus larseni et Spitrasaurus wensaasi[31], le pliosaure Pliosaurus funkei[32] et les ichtyosaures Cryopterygius kristiansenae[33], Keilhauia nui[34] et Palvennia hoybergeti (issus de la formation d'Agardhfjellet)[33].
Druckenmiller a aussi contribué à l'étude de la mégafaune du Pléistocène, en cosignant des articles sur les schémas de déplacement au cours de la vie des mammouths laineux[35] et des bisons des steppes[36], sur l'écologie alimentaire des chevaux sauvages et des bisons des steppes dans la steppe à mammouths de l'Alaska[37], ainsi que sur les changements de répartition géographique des mastodontes d'Amérique en réponse aux oscillations climatiques du Pléistocène[38].
L'expertise de Druckenmiller dans l'organisation d'expéditions sûres et réussies en Arctique a fait l'objet d'un article dans la revue Nature, dans lequel il attribue le succès de ses expéditions à la qualité de la nourriture.
« Une bonne alimentation — de haute qualité et en quantités généreuses — est essentielle... Après trente saisons de terrain, Druckenmiller n'a besoin que d'une tente sèche pour être heureux. Mais il reste très attentif à quiconque pourrait se laisser submerger par des conditions difficiles. »[39].

Predator X
[modifier | modifier le code]En , Druckenmiller a participé au documentaire de la chaîne History Channel intitulé Predator X[44] pour évoquer sa découverte, au Svalbard, d'un pliosaure dont la morsure aurait été quatre fois plus puissante que celle du Tyrannosaurus rex[45]. Druckenmiller et ses collègues ont par la suite été interviewés par National Geographic[45], The Link, Live Science[46] et Fox News. Dans le Norwegian Journal of Geology (en), Druckenmiller et ses collègues ont baptisé la créature Pliosaurus funkei. Un film de fiction intitulé Extinction: Predator X s'est apparemment inspiré de ce documentaire et de ces fouilles[47].
