About Chad Hugo

A record producer and songwriter, Chad Hugo is perhaps most renowned as one-half of the production duo The Neptunes alongside his production partner Pharrell Williams, which produced a number of hip-hop, R&B and pop hits for artists such as JAY-Z, USHER, Gwen Stefani and many more. Hugo is also the guitarist of the rap/rock band N.E.R.D., which he formed with Pharrell and Shay Haley.

Born Charles Edward Hugo in Portsmouth, Virginia on February 24, 1974, his early years revolved around music, from being fascinated by synthesizers to picking up on DJing and the saxophone. It was while playing the latter instrument in middle school that he met Pharrell at a summer camp, whom he continued to bond with when they went on to attend the same high school and were in marching band together. Hugo got his start in the music business under the wing of producer Teddy Riley, who established his studio in Virginia. Hugo played saxophone on Blackstreet’s “Happy Home” for their debut album in 1994, and co-wrote “Tonight’s The Night” on the same album along with Pharrell.

The first single produced by The Neptunes was SWV’s 1996 song “Use Your Heart,” but their profile began to rise in 1998 with the singles “Lookin' At Me” by Ma$e and “Superthug” by Noreaga. Throughout his award-winning years with the production duo, Hugo also engaged in solo production work, with his earliest placements being “Ride” by Average Guyz in 1995 and Taral’s “How Can I Get Over You” in 1997. He would co-write and produce much of Kenna’s discography from 2003-2013, collaborate and make remixes of songs by Ashlee Simpson, Jesse McCartney, JoJo, Kings of Leon among others, and notably co-write and play rhythm guitar on “I Care” by Beyoncé in 2011.

Hugo, who is of Filipino descent, contributed to the album for the 2014 documentary film of Filipino boxer and politician Manny Pacquiao under the alias Yardnoise. His accolades as part of The Neptunes include being crowned Producer of the Year in 2002 at both The Source Awards and the Billboard Music Awards, winning three Grammy Awards, being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020, and receiving an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory at Berklee in 2021.
