Here are all the pride flag hearts I have - in no particular order. They're on a white background, not particularly exciting but it was easier to have photoshop bulk resize them as they were :D

If you don't see your pride flag let me know.

20 SongDay -the Prima Donna Gauntlet

(Diablo Swing Orchestre)

Sometimes the only way to get killer to relax is to Run him so ragged he's too tired to think. which has been easy enough these last few days Rescuing anew & liberating the Victoria Park and getting her sea worthy again. Kidd learned the trick from the best-Killer often did the same to him when they were small. Give him endless lists of tasks to do and things to find. Either to keep him distracted or to keep him out of sight when trouble was sniffing around.

As a teen, Kidd had resented the treatment. As a young man, with a new to manage, kids had come to understand the power of staying to busy to think. Add on killer's tendency to degrad himself over the well being of their enlw-k.tt specifically - and sometimes extra chores just wasn't enough. It made Kidd a little more possessive than usual. Maybe aggressively so.

He'd never onder anyone to his bed, but he could be rather insistant and killed never had been very good at telling him 'no'

Killen, who was finally sleeping at his side. Exhaustion on every line of his face, the soft permant smile Relaxed from it's painful extreme but still causing a pinch of urease at each corner. But he sighed softly, curling in tighten to Kidd's side.

Complety spent. He hadn't even woken when Kidd had initially gotten up to clean them both up- confining to kids just how rugged he'd been Running the last far. what days? weeks?

^ Kidd should get up -he still had his own Responsibitlies to do. But instead he'd crawled back into the blankets with Killen and just held tight.

The wi-fi here does not agree with my laptop for whatever reason and I'm not writing up my Saturday on a phone, lol. I'll do a full writeup after I get home. Suffice for now to say that it was a pretty good day overall.

It was a big day today and it started off badly. I was awoken at dawn with a charley horse in my good leg, not thrilling on a day when I'll be walking and standing all day.

And then somehow what should be an hour and 10 minute trip took 2 hours (I had to make 2 stops but how that took an hour I have no idea) So I missed the opportunity to walk around the author's market before I went to listen to Craig Johnson (the author of the mystery series that became the Longmire series).

He was fantastic. He is incredibly funny and I could have listened to him talk for an additional hour. He is also the sweetest guy. He was talking about inspirations for characters and one is an enrolled Crow man, Dan Pretty On Top. Now there's a name. By the time I got there most of the books had been gone (so seriously wtf happened with that hour) and I did pick up one I hadn't read (should have gotten 2. I never expected people to drag in 12 books each for signing) I had wanted one for mom but alas nothing was in print big enough for her to see. All I wanted was for Mr. Johnson to let me take a pic of him signing. He insisted I get in there with him. Like I said, super sweet.

(and now all I'm thinking of is Lou Diamon Phillips as Henry Standing Bear).

This festival isn't over until 5 but sure enough just like last year, people were already packing up at 10 to 4. Fine that's one way to buy less. I saw two authors I bought from last year (but didn't like either of their books). Way too many were book genres I don't read (and even when I do pick up romantasy, enemies to lovers and forbidden love are not my thing). I did find one crazy sounding urban fantasy The Veracin Blade (has phoenixes, dragons, and an otter shifter alchemist) and judging by the inscription a squirrel bookstore.

I go to the museum/cultural center to be sure I know where to park. And since it's so late the lot is empty but I feel confident it's the right place. But UGH it's paybyphone.com. I hate this so much. I tried to get into it, fairly sure I used this in Kansas City but it won't let me in. I give up.

I headed to try to get to Lowe's to get that toilet snake...only to a) find out you can't go 64 E from downtown today and it looks like it might be a more of a sudden closure judging by how many people were confused and the workers flagging us away and b) my GPS is confused when in WV. Now it's 10 to 5 and I wanted very much to eat at Fazio's They are old school Italian and I really liked it last time. This time I got eggplant/mushroom/mostaccioli and a moment of regret because I didn't think to ask for the specials nor did my server think to tell me and I overheard the next table with butternut squash ravioli. Alas. Otherwise she was a great server and my dinner was great.

I also used that time to get into that stupid parking app and after changing my password it let me in. I get back to the cultural center and it's way too early to go in (by a half hour) so I sit and read my book. Get out and pay by phone says it can't find this. I ask someone else walking by and they said they thought it was free tonight. Good enough for me.

They were selling halloween themed painted ballet shoes and old costumes. I liked the pink one (I KNOW! Pink!) with a skeletal foot and the ballerina next to me is encouraging me to buy it (I didn't) and I said that is cute but I used to work on the Cleveland Ballet since my podiatry school was practically next door, and that is not what a ballerina foot looks like. She nods sagely. No it does not. No hallux valgus.

It was open seating so yay for being there early. I brought my mothman with me

I have seen several of the better ballet troupes in this country over the years. The Charleston one isn't quite at that level but they did very good. It opens with three short pieces, poltergeist with about a dozen ballerinas who looked a bit more like corpse brides than ghosts but that's okay. Then there was a duet entitled Chicos on Stage (movement 4) and they were excellent.

And then came Camille Saint-Saëns Danse Macabre. It was over a dozen dancers in a graveyard with black light activated skeletons on the front and nothing on the back so it looked like the skeletons were flicking in and out of existence. It was very effective. In fact this was my favorite piece of the night.

Last but surely not least was the Legend of Mothman's world premiere. The music was from a local composer and I liked it. What I liked particularly was they kept it in the 1960s mostly. They had a large screen at the back of the stage and projected things on it to set the stage. First up were known artwork depicting the legend of Cornstalk and his (and his sister's) curse on Point Pleasant with his sister being one of the lead dancers (who became a fortune teller in 1960) We got woodland scenes with red eyes and flights of moths.

But most delightful were the 3 Men in Black, they stole the show really.

I loved that the party scene was with a large cast and everyone in 1960s dress and the music reflected the mod era as did the dancing. Our four Mothman witnesses are there and the fortune teller of course predicts the haunting red eyes. Upset, they go to the TNT plant to neck (this part did happen) to make out. This is where they dance about in terror over the Mothman until everyone faints, leaving the prima to dance alone...ish.

I went back and forth mentally about whether the Mothman on the screen that she dances with was 100 computer generated or was it a dancer/stop motion cgi situation (I like this option better than AI). He was fun bearing some bird features (Mothman was first described as the bird man) and then wings ala the statue in town.

It really was fun. I enjoyed it, glad I went. I try to go home and...turns out 64W is also closed. OMG. And all my GPS wants to do is circle back to that closed ramp. I have some familiarity with the area and set the gps to go back to the convention center. I know the way home from there. Almost got hit by a police car ripping up the on ramp the wrong way. Made it home in the hour and 10 minutes it should have taken.

1). I went to Indiana! Was there from Sunday to Thursday; got in late Thursday night.

Verdict: Indiana is...fine. I view it (and Ohio, and other parts of the country) as being indicative of how public policy failures have led to situations which are untenable for the people who live in them, but, well, what can you do?

Mostly: it was deeply unnerving to me, coming from the PNW and a very pedestrian-and-bike-friendly college town, how hostile the city was toward anyone on foot (or bike). I rented a car and drove for part of the time I was there; while driving, when I stopped for pedestrians at e.g. crosswalks with flashing lights or when they had the WALK signal across an intersection and the like, I was: honked at, flipped off, and at one point someone shouted a bunch of profanity at me. For...not running down people on foot, I suppose? Ugh.

There's other bits, but this is what stuck with me the most: wow, this place is really hateful to anyone that's not driving.

2). Teaching itself went well; students are all very nice and I am looking forward to working with them over Zoom in the weeks ahead.

3). I am apparently still on East Coast time, something that saw me going to bed at 10:30(!) last night. (Typically I'm not even home until 10:30 on a Friday!) Means I woke up early and was like, "Yes, I am Awake", though of course as soon as I woke up I was HOWLED AT by the Little Cat, who wished to make her displeasure at me being gone known and who insisted on cuddling for roughly two hours(!). She is typically not cuddly at all on weekends; I suppose this is her way of being like, "HUMAN, WHERE DID YOU GO, HOW DARE YOU LEAVE" :D

4). We went and saw Wildwood today. I loved it, of course. It's possibly the most Oregon movie ever made, and the beginning is a love-letter to the parts of Portland I am most fond of. Saw it in a local theater while having a pint of (hyperlocal) cider (Two Towns' "Hollow Jack"; they're located here and I am actually friendly with one of the original founders).

Anyway, I recommend it — it's a beautiful movie and very enjoyable even if you are not going "!!" at all the little nods to the Decemberists and Portland culture.

5). Eberron is up and running and since the dust has settled, I feel like I can officially advertise it here: if you have ever seen me talk about tabletop and wish to join in, this is a good campaign and a good jumping-off point.

You can find out more about the campaign at this link, and more about how I run the games server and my general philosophy toward DMing here.

I always feel a need to add whenever I give a little plug for stuff I do: I am not desperate for players and I am not willing to bend on server rules or how I run games. Eberron has 17 active players as of this month. I advertise stuff here because I think that I'm good at running games (it's a form of storytelling) and I like inviting people to what I run. I do not advertise games in hope of getting enough people to run something, so if you are like, "I'm doing her a favor", adjust your expectations accordingly. :)

Halloween Day 24: Hallowqueens

A couple of weeks ago, I came across the word 'hallowqueens' and it amused me.

So let's talk about lady vampires and have a film rec.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a 2014 Iranian film. I found it on my library film system (called Kanopy). If you like French films, black-and-white films, noir, James Dean films. The director was (I read) a DJ so there's a soundtrack of what I would call club music (I'm sure that's not the right term). You have to be in a certain mood but it's a good film. The most memorable scene is The Girl with chador (Islamic cloak) flowing skateboarding through the night.

It follows a mysterious young woman in a decaying Iranian city who uses her vampiric powers to prey on those who exploit others, crossing paths with a local man struggling to care for his father. Shot in striking black and white, it blends vampire lore with Western and arthouse influences, praised for its cinematography, soundtrack, and feminist themes. Though its tone shifts, critics laud it as stylish, unique, and worth watching for its atmosphere.

And I went back to my fanfic roots and did a meet-cute of genderswapped BBC Sherlock fem!Sherlock/fem!John meeting at a Hallowqueen speed dating event.

Correction. Hyunjin keeps watching them, the two of them, together, in the mirror.

On one hand, that’s to be expected. They’re in the dance studio, alone, working on a choreo for a dance challenge Hyunjin wanted to do and that’s proven a bit trickier than anticipated. On the other hand…

Turner Prize 2026 - Marguerite Humeau

So the Turner Prize is being held in Middlesbrough this year, & since I was in the area, I figured I'd go have a look. I'm not much of an art connoisseur, I'll admit, but I like cool-looking stuff that says interesting things about the world, so that must count for something. I took so many photos while there, so I'm giving each of the artists their own post. Well, three out of the four, as one was an audio-visual spoken word poetry experience where you had to be there.

First up, Marguerite Humeau - Torches

( torches )

I liked this one. I have no idea what meaning there is behind it, but there's a lot of interesting shapes. I like interesting shapes.

19 Song Day- Lipstick

(Buzzcocks) • Posters for 'Captain' Kidd are tacked all over their galley walls. like every member of thicken bought on stole a paper in port to bring it home to show it off.

Spirits are high, they'd been celebrity for at least 18 hours. It's not Kidd's first bounty, but it's the first big one - and the first one with an epitent.

"Captain." the poster said, Kidd was delighted, but he could have done without the gentle mockery from crew. At least his bounty was now higher then killers. Marines finaly figured out it was his cow. He had to have his crew Kidd Pirates for crying out loud so they'd get the hint.

Killen had been overseas the festivities from the stern deck, causially drinking as he watched from his perch "on the railings. There was a hatch at the message must but kid climbed the new missing up instead,

"Captain." Kidd greeting, a lift in his voice- a gentle tease.

"Damn straight I am."

Until this printing, killer consistently had a higher bounty than him-his melee battle style had . him up in the marine's faces while Kidd's area of control with his fruit had been handy to pin down to one person. Killen had been the in-your face presence for the death & destruction. The death count by the whole pirate car had been given to the masked murderer whose vistage haunted the survivors. Kidd never blamed his partner for flat but this was his ambitions they had set sail for. and he'd started to get sulky about it, killer had foundly called him a brat.

well this brat now had the highest bounty. He was preening about it and wasn't even trying to hide it.He leaned on the Rail next to killer and took some time to enjoy the party.

"I got a nice frame for you poster."

Kidd studied his mask, 111ha focused below, pointedly not looking at him. The way he swallowed, the clench of his jaw. He wash blushing under that mask.

Impulsivly, Kidd leaned into his side, kissing the chrome over killer's temple.

. In Kidd's workshop, His first bounty poster already hung. It wasn't alone. His poster wasn't the only one of the crew's that had been in that paper's release. Killer had gotten his first poster to- with twice the boutay. Kidd had hung it in the place of honor- his own as an afterthought.

His captain posted would indeed go up-if killer bought a frame how could he not show it off!

It was a good day. He was happy. He would glance own at the Red stain on killer's helmet and feel gidy all over again.

Killer finished his drink and clamped back over the Railing, leading to the hatch to Kidd's rooms. His, workshop & sleep is quarter. " "Come on Captain. Kidd smirked and followed him down.

once the hatch 'closed, the dim ligung took a moment for his eyes to adjust. Warm lips pressed against him, and he reeled up to tangle his hands in Killen's hair.

They made out again th must, Kitt grinny "call me captan again?"

killer lussed his jar. "Never gonna be able to call you that in public the way to act..."

Kidd's grin only grew.

IRL has been XXXing me in the YYY lately, although only in moderate levels compared to what many seem to be going through :( Lots of love and hugs. The bullshit remains ongoing here, but I think I just got sick of going into hermit-mode, or I guess maybe I've temporarily regained enough strength for other things... Either way, thanks to a friend doing word sprints with me this morning I did start writing again (and had a bit of fun, even :D) and now I'm trying to dig myself out of my Dreamwidth reading page and inbox backlog, but unfortunately it looks like this is going to be a multi-day endeavour. Be patient with me! As everyone always is here :D Just a heads-up for more not-being-on-top-of-anything than usual, I suppose. I did seem to lose interest in all my hobbies for a bit, except for petting the cat (although never as much as I should, obviously) and reading (The Unicorn Hunters was so good! I'm not the only murderer at the retirement home was so funny!!).

Meanwhile, Pillowfort is closing down :( That's sad. I feel like they were birds of a feather with Dreamwidth in terms of the kind of Internet culture and conversation style they encouraged. Quite a few users seem to be looking at Dreamwidth as a potential home, so let me signal boost a few comms:

  • [community profile] pillowfolks has been quite active if you're trying to find your people or your feet (or both!!) (or more!) in here. Introductions and site usage tips (there's more on [community profile] newcomers as well). Finding people and things on DW seems like a good starting point!
  • Spotted [community profile] pillowfolk_gamers for the Pillowfort gamers to find each other (and potentially new friends?)
  • I'm not familiar with "Pillowfort blankets" but [community profile] pillowfortu_haul makes it sound like prompt lists to answer in your journal? Which I think many in my circles would enjoy!

I'll add more as I see them while I sloooooowwwwllyyy catch up on my reading page :) (Edit: Or just link to this helpful list on [community profile] pillowfolks!)
