fix(recipes): fold VR200 RDMA netns mode into the tuning NodeWright CR - #2988
Conversation
The VR200/RKE2 recipes shipped two rebooting NodeWright CRs against the same GPU nodes: the tuning CR (nvidia-tuned) and rdma-netns-exclusive. interruptionBudget is enforced per CR and does not compose, so under the default sequencing: node both GPU workers could reboot at once, and no dependency edge ordered the two across deployers (#2572). Move the RDMA package into tuning-rke2.yaml behind a new rdmaNetnsExclusive value (default off), set by the two VR200 parent overlays. One CR means one budget bounding every reboot, and because neither package dependsOn the other, nodewright coalesces their reboots into one per node. tuningEnabled now gates only nvidia-tuned; the CR renders when either package does. The standalone rdma-netns-exclusive component, manifest, and health check are removed. Signed-off-by: Alex Yuskauskas <ayuskauskas@nvidia.com>

Wait for the legacy rdma-netns-exclusive CR to complete (or disable it) before applying the merged tuning CR, since the two interruption budgets do not compose. Correct which deployers prune the old release, and note the NodeWright CR is cluster-scoped. Signed-off-by: Alex Yuskauskas <ayuskauskas@nvidia.com>

A complete NodeWright CR still enrolls nodes that join later, so leaving the legacy rdma-netns-exclusive CR beside the merged tuning CR reboots a new node twice under independent budgets. Remove it per deployer and confirm it is gone before applying the new bundle; pause rather than disable a stuck rollout, since disable lets in-flight work finish. Also correct the nodewright tuning-gate text for tuning-rke2.yaml, whose CR stays while the RDMA package is enabled, and describe rdmaNetnsExclusive=false as dropping the package, not restoring shared mode. …ew bundle The Flux step resumed the Kustomization once the new bundle was committed, which a reader could do before step 3 deletes the legacy rdma-netns-exclusive CR. The merged tuning CR would then reconcile beside it, the double enrollment the section warns about. Keep the Kustomization suspended until step 4, which now carries the resume. Step 4 also has the source fetch the pushed bundle before the resume. Resuming reconciles the revision the GitRepository last fetched, which can be the old tree for up to its 10m interval; that tree re-creates the legacy HelmRelease, and its hook re-creates the CR. Summary
Moves the VR200/RKE2 host RDMA exclusive netns-mode package into the
tuningNodeWright CR (tuning-rke2.yaml), gated by a newrdmaNetnsExclusivevalue. VR200 recipes now ship one rebooting CR instead of two, and the standalonerdma-netns-exclusivecomponent is removed.Motivation / Context
The VR200/RKE2 recipes shipped two rebooting NodeWright CRs against the same GPU nodes.
interruptionBudget.count: 1is enforced per CR and does not compose across CRs. Under the defaultsequencing: node, one node could start tuning while another was still rebooting for RDMA, so both GPU workers of a 2-node NVL72 could reboot at once. No dependency edge ordered the two CRs across deployers, and each node took two reboots. This implements option A from #2572 (merge both packages into one Skyhook).Fixes: N/A
Related: #2572. That issue also tracks a separate Preview-to-GA condition: an effective-state assertion for tuning settings, rather than trusting
status: complete. This PR does not address it, so the issue stays open.Type of Change

operator/v0.19.0, the pinned chart's appVersion.RunNextreturns every package whose dependencies are complete.fudgeInterruptWithPrioritypicks one interrupt per node per pass (reboot wins, ties go to the first package by name), and the other packages' interrupts are markedskippedand promoted tocompletewhen the reboot Job finishes. nodewright documents this as "Interrupts coalesce" (docs/user-guide/custom-resource.md).dependsOnthe other. The merged reboot fires as soon as no package Job is running on the node, not when every package has reached its reboot step. So the package that issues it (first by name) must be the slower one:nvidia-tunedsorts beforerdma-netns-exclusive. The manifest comment records this, andTestNodewrightTuningRKE2RDMAGateasserts it.tuningEnabled(default on) now gates onlynvidia-tuned.rdmaNetnsExclusive(default off, only an explicittrueenables) gates the RDMA package. The CR renders only when at least one package does. Both use the existingtoStringcomparison, so values arriving as strings under--deployer fluxbehave the same. The deployment validator's render-aware health-check suppression works unchanged: on VR200,tuningEnabled=falsestill renders a CR, so completion is still asserted.-dynamo/-kubeflowchildren inherit it. The catalog and stock-render parity goldens change only for the two VR200 leaves.runtimeRequired, so each node keeps the taint until both packages finish.--accelerated-node-selectornow applies to RDMA too.nodewright-customizationslevel, ahead of GPU Operator, which also closes the Flux ordering gap described in the issue.modprobe.dpath unchanged, so re-applying on existing nodes is idempotent.Testing
TestNodewrightTuningRKE2RDMAGate: table-driven over both gates, in bool and Flux string forms, plus the shared-reboot preconditions. Making the RDMA gate default-on fails two of its cases.nodewright-customizations(72, including non-leaf overlays) showed the RDMA package in exactly the four VR200/RKE2 overlays.vr200-rke2-ubuntu-inference-dynamoandvr200-rke2-ubuntu-training-kubeflow.make qualifywas not run locally, and no cluster run has been done yet.Risk Assessment
Scoped to the VR200/RKE2 Preview recipes, but it removes a registry component and changes node reboot behavior.
Rollout notes: Clusters deployed from an earlier bundle run a separate
rdma-netns-exclusiveCR. It must be removed before the new bundle is applied, not just leftcomplete: it has its owninterruptionBudgetand keeps enrolling GPU nodes that match its selector, so a node that joins later would run both CRs and reboot twice. The documented sequence: wait for it to reportcomplete(or pause it); remove the component so nothing recreates the CR (helm uninstall rdma-netns-exclusive -n nodewrightfor Helm/helmfile, which also deletes the CR because the bundler strips its hook annotations; for Argo CD, turn off automated sync on the parent Application and delete the child Application; for Flux, suspend the Kustomization and delete theHelmRelease); delete the CR if it remains (kubectl delete nodewright rdma-netns-exclusive, cluster-scoped) and confirm it returnsNotFound; then apply the new bundle. On the first rollout, the merged CR re-applies the RDMA package on already-tuned nodes, which costs one more reboot per GPU node.docs/integrator/rke2-vr200-setup.mddocuments these steps. An external--dataoverlay that references the removedrdma-netns-exclusivecomponent now fails recipe resolution; the fix is to setrdmaNetnsExclusive: trueonnodewright-customizationsinstead.Checklist
