fix(bundler): schedule readiness gate Jobs on system nodes - #2992
Conversation
The readiness-gate Job emitted by gatemanifest.Render carried no nodeSelector or tolerations, even when the bundle was built with --system-node-selector / --system-node-toleration. On a cluster whose every node is tainted the gate pod was unschedulable, so the readiness Application stayed Progressing while the gated component was healthy (#2590). Render now takes a required Scheduling (node selector + tolerations) and emits it on the Job's pod spec; readiness.go passes the bundle's system-node scheduling. A zero Scheduling leaves the manifest byte-identical. Values are validated with the API server's nodeSelector and toleration rules before being spliced in, because the manifest is later executed as a Go template and the CLI's scheduling parsers do not restrict characters. When no toleration flag is set, the CLI (resolveTolerations) and the server (ParseTolerations(nil) in pkg/bundler/handler.go) fall back to DefaultTolerations(), a keyless {operator: Exists}. That now lands on every gate Job, including for users who pass no scheduling flags at all.
Consequences:
- The gate tolerates not-ready, unreachable and unschedulable taints, so it can bind to a NotReady or cordoned node. Before this PR it had no tolerations and avoided those nodes.
- A bare
Existsalso cancels the default 300stolerationSecondseviction from unreachable nodes. - The Job has no
activeDeadlineSeconds, so if the pod never starts or never gets evicted,--max-waitnever runs and the Helm post-install hook or Argo CD sync hangs until some outer timeout, if there is one.
Could the gate skip the implicit default and use only tolerations the user set explicitly, and/or add an activeDeadlineSeconds?

Keyless tolerations are no longer applied to the gate, whatever their source (the CLI/API tolerate-all default, an explicit *, or config). With no key, a toleration matches the not-ready, unreachable and unschedulable taints, which is the shape that caused the problems you listed. Keyed tolerations still apply. The Job also sets activeDeadlineSeconds to the gate's max wait plus 3m. That buffer is below Helm's 5m timeout buffer, so a pod that never schedules or starts fails the Job instead of holding the hook or sync open.

The gate takes only the bundle-level system scheduling and ignores the gated component's own placement: policy.optOut, --dynamic scheduling paths (#1371), per-component --set ...nodeSelector/tolerations, and overlay append-mode lists. With --set gpuoperator:operator.nodeSelector.pool=infra plus a different --system-node-selector, gpu-operator lands on one pool while its gate is pinned to another, and it can be unschedulable where the component itself runs fine. The tests and docs say the gate schedules where the component does; right now that is only true when the component uses the system defaults.

The gate doesn't need to run on its component's node. All seven gates are read-only assertions on CR status (ClusterPolicy, NicClusterPolicy, OLM Subscription/CSV) made through the API. The executor only allows assert/error, and the image is built for both amd64 and arm64, so any healthy node works. I've dropped the "schedules where the component does" wording from the docs, test and comments.
Following the component's own placement is still worth doing, especially for --dynamic. The gate folder already receives the component's values: the same values.yaml/cluster-values.yaml split under helm, and the parent's override key under argocd-helm. What's missing is a template that renders placement from .Values at install time. Tracked in #3003.
Review follow-ups for the readiness gate placement: - Drop keyless tolerations from the gate pod. An empty key matches the not-ready, unreachable and unschedulable taints, so the CLI/API tolerate-all default (or an explicit '*') would let the gate bind to an unhealthy or cordoned node and cancel the default unreachable eviction. - Set activeDeadlineSeconds (ReadinessGateMaxWait plus the new ReadinessGateActiveDeadlineBuffer, kept below Helm's timeout buffer) so a gate pod that never schedules or starts fails the Job instead of holding a Helm hook or Argo CD sync open. - Reject Lt/Gt tolerations: they need a feature gate the bundle cannot see, and no CLI, config or API input produces them. - Validate and render the placement once per bundle via gatemanifest.NewPlacement, before any readiness.yaml is loaded, and name the source flags/config keys in the error. - Docs: placement is bundle-level; it does not follow per-component --set or --dynamic values, and SDK callers get what they set. Summary
Readiness-gate Jobs now carry the bundle's system node selector and keyed system tolerations, so they schedule on tainted clusters instead of hanging
Pendingand leaving the readiness ApplicationProgressingforever. The Job also bounds itself withactiveDeadlineSeconds.Motivation / Context
gatemanifest.Renderemitted the gate Job with nonodeSelector, tolerations, oraffinity, even when the bundle was built with--system-node-selector/--system-node-toleration. On a cluster where every node is tainted, the gate pod was unschedulable while the component it gates was healthy. This was hit on a GB300 NCP cluster (argocd-helm deployer). A sibling cluster only worked because it happened to have an untainted node.Fixes: #2590

gatemanifest.NewPlacement(Scheduling{NodeSelector, Tolerations})returns an opaquePlacement.Rendertakes it as a required argument, so no caller can skip placement or pass unvalidated values.readiness.gobuilds it fromb.Config.SystemNodeSelector()/SystemNodeTolerations()before loading anyreadiness.yaml, so bad input fails fast with the same error regardless of component order. The error names the source flags and config keys.*, or config. A toleration with no key matches the node lifecycle controller's not-ready, unreachable, and unschedulable taints, so it would let the gate bind to a NotReady or cordoned node and would cancel the default eviction from unreachable nodes. Keyed tolerations are kept. With no scheduling flags, the gate therefore renders no placement fields, as before this PR. On an all-tainted cluster, pass a keyed--system-node-toleration.activeDeadlineSeconds=ReadinessGateMaxWait+ReadinessGateActiveDeadlineBuffer(90m + 3m). A pod that never schedules or starts never runs the gate's own--max-wait, and Argo CD has no other bound on the sync. The buffer is kept belowReadinessGateHelmTimeoutBuffer(5m) so the Job, not Helm, reports the failure; a test pins that relationship.manifest.Render, then Helm/Argo) and the CLI parsers do not restrict characters.config.NodeLabel.Validate.ValidateTolerations(k8s.io/kubernetes@v1.37.0): an empty key requiresExists;tolerationSecondsrequiresNoExecute;Equalvalues must be label values;Existsvalues must be empty.Lt/Gtare rejected: they need a feature gate the bundle cannot see, and nothing in the CLI, config file, or API produces them.assert/error, and the image is multi-arch. So a gate needs a healthy node, not its component's node. Per-component--setand--dynamicscheduling are not mirrored;--dynamicvalues exist only in the component's own install-timecluster-values.yamland cannot be known when the bundle is generated.Testing
