Summary

Pre-release sweep of the user, integrator, and contributor docs. It fixes factual drift against the code, broken or wrong links, inconsistencies between pages, and typos or broken markdown. It also regenerates the component version matrix so it runs through v0.22.0.

Motivation / Context

A release is coming up soon. Every changed claim was checked against the source (pkg/cli, api/aicr/v1/server.yaml, recipes/registry.yaml, pkg/client/v1, the workflows, and infra/uat/reservations.yaml).

Fixes: N/A
Related: #3029 (follow-up: version-matrix generator)

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update
  • Refactoring (no functional changes)
  • Build/CI/tooling

Component(s) Affected

  • CLI (cmd/aicr, pkg/cli)
  • API server (cmd/aicrd, pkg/server)
  • Recipe engine / data (pkg/recipe)
  • Bundlers (pkg/bundler, pkg/component/*)
  • Collectors / snapshotter (pkg/collector, pkg/snapshotter)
  • Validator (pkg/validator)
  • Core libraries (pkg/errors, pkg/k8s)
  • Docs/examples (docs/, examples/)
  • Other: root CONTRIBUTING.md, DEVELOPMENT.md, RELEASE.md

Implementation Notes

Docs only; no code changes. docs/design/**, docs/conformance/**, and CHANGELOG.md are deliberately untouched, because they are historical records. Generated regions are untouched too, except the version matrix (below).

Errors and drift vs. code

  • CLI reference
    • Added missing env vars (AICR_NAMESPACE, AICR_IMAGE, AICR_REQUIRE_GPU, AICR_RUNTIME_CLASS, AICR_DEBUG, AICR_LOG_JSON). The page now says that AICR_LOG_LEVEL is read only by aicrd; the CLI derives its level from --debug.
    • Corrected --require-gpu: on snapshot it adds an nvidia.com/gpu request only in privileged mode, and with --privileged=false it adds none but still disables automatic GPU-node selection; on validate it applies to the snapshot-capture agent. agent-deployment.md is aligned.
    • Corrected validate --timeout (it bounds only the snapshot-capture agent Job).
    • Added missing aliases (mirror list --gpu, evidence digest -k) and the flags mirror list inherits from recipe.
    • Noted that query excludes --output.
    • The --storage-class example now uses the class AICR actually creates on EKS (ebs-csi-default-sc) rather than a non-existent gp3.
    • Corrected the --certificate-identity-regexp constraint, the component counts, and the "Recipe Not Found" sample error.
  • API reference
    • Added the missing workload-gate and workload-selector bundle params.
    • Added six components missing from the "all components" table.
    • Added the 413 behavior for POST /v1/bundle and sorted the routes sample.
    • Replaced the troubleshooting entry for an error string the handler no longer emits.
  • Go library guide
    • The agent-RBAC snippet called a non-existent ProvisionAgentRoles; it now uses WriteAgentRoleManifests.
    • Corrected the ComponentRef, BundleOptions, and ValidateSettings field lists.
    • The snippet now states that the annotated ServiceAccount must already exist and be passed as AgentConfig.ServiceAccountName.
    • Bumped the release pin to v0.22.0, and the NOTE now names the field still unreleased (GKEGPUPoolsPath), and the ValidateSettings() section marks skip-check projection as newer than that pin.
  • Contributor docs
    • Wrong Prometheus metric names (aicr_server_* → aicr_http_*).
    • Non-existent identifiers: WithSubtypes, attachAKSGPUPools, SupportedIntents, PodSuccessTimeout, BundleComponents.
    • Wrong placement of constraints in the validator example and surface table; clarified the ==/!= version-vs-string fallback.
    • Seven of the 15 bundle-time validation functions were listed; all 15 are now.
    • Missing exit code 9 (ErrCodeCanceled).
    • The CLI logging table no longer claims the CLI reads AICR_LOG_LEVEL.
  • UAT runbook: reservations, slugs, discovery prefix, and the previous_n default updated to match infra/uat/reservations.yaml and uat-nightly-batch.yaml.
  • CONTRIBUTING / DEVELOPMENT: removed the make generate-validator quick start, because its tools/generate-validator script no longer exists. The DEVELOPMENT.md summary of validator.md now lists the sections that page actually has.
  • Other pages
    • network-operator namespace in bundling.md, and the bundle-layout description in the bundling.md and tutorial.md intros (README, checksums.txt, and bundle-info.yaml live at the bundle root).
    • gpu-operator-health phase (conformance, not deployment).
    • Non-existent check gpu-operator-ready in the evidence-dashboard and testgrid examples.
    • gb200-eks-ubuntu-training inheritance chain.
    • OpenShift recipe example: componentRefs level and missing deps.
    • Stale Dynamo NATS/PVC claim in the RKE2 VR200 guide.
    • Argo CD manifests/ source layout, the -post folder layout, and a missing error check in the data-flow.md snippet.
    • NCCL_DEBUG claim in fabric-attached-training.md, now scoped to the ClusterTrainingRuntimes AICR ships.
    • Transition-record counts (now five).
    • Wording left over from the original PR in the SBOM migration table.
    • Air-gap guide links that still pointed at closed Air-gap and private-registry mirroring guide #743.
    • Stale "fails closed, tracked in Reconcile evidence allowlist loaders (GP2/GP4) with the GP1 identityPattern/source schema #1505" note.

Links: the nodewright runtime_required.md link 404'd upstream and now points to docs/user-guide/runtime-required.md. Two code examples used the legacy skyhook.nvidia.com/runtime-required=true workload-gate key; they now use the current default.

Generated: docs/user/component-version-matrix.md stopped at v0.20.0 and has no scheduled refresh. It was regenerated with the make version-matrix-docs pipeline (tools/upgrade-matrix --releases 8) and now covers v0.16.0 through v0.22.0.

Found but left for follow-up (outside docs or needs an owner's rewrite):

Testing

lychee --offline --include-fragments 'docs/**/*.md' '*.md' # 0 errors
lychee (online) on user/integrator/contributor docs + root files # only the fixed nodewright 404 was real
make check-docs-filenames check-docs-mdx check-docs-mdx-parse check-docs-yaml # all OK
go test -count=1 <24 packages whose tests read docs/ or root .md files> # all ok

A heading-anchor cross-check over all non-design docs found no broken anchors.

Full make qualify was skipped because this is a docs-only change: no Go, YAML, or recipe files changed. The Go tests that parse docs (doc-example replay, BOM freshness, Go-library examples table, release policy, architecture) were run directly and pass. CI, including the lychee link check, passes on the current head.

Risk Assessment

  • Low — Isolated change, well-tested, easy to revert
  • Medium — Touches multiple components or has broader impact
  • High — Breaking change, affects critical paths, or complex rollout

Rollout notes: N/A

Checklist

  • Tests pass locally (make test with -race) — scoped doc-reading packages only; see Testing
  • Linter passes (make lint) — docs gates only; see Testing
  • I did not skip/disable tests to make CI green
  • I added/updated tests for new functionality
  • I updated docs if user-facing behavior changed
  • Changes follow existing patterns in the codebase
  • Commits are cryptographically signed (git commit -S) — GPG signing info

Fix factual drift against the code (CLI flags, env vars, API params,
metric names, Go identifiers, component namespaces, UAT reservations),
a broken upstream nodewright link, stale release pins, and assorted
typos and broken markdown across user, integrator, and contributor docs.
Regenerate the component version matrix through v0.22.0.

Add the post-component Application to the flow diagram.

The new guidance says raw manifests ship in a separate, ordered -post Application. The following flow diagram lists only the base component Applications and app-of-apps.yaml. Add the post-component Application so readers do not omit it when they follow this flow.

🟡 Minor · Document the equality fallback. · validator.md:115

docs/contributor/validator.md:115
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Document the equality fallback.

== and != attempt version comparison when the expected value looks like a version. If parsing fails, ParsedConstraint.Evaluate falls back to string comparison. Clarify this fallback in the table. The evaluator in pkg/constraints/expr/expr.go (Lines 173–242) implements this behavior.

Suggested wording
-| `==`, `!=` | Explicit equality / inequality | Version compare if the expected value looks like a version, else string |
+| `==`, `!=` | Explicit equality / inequality | Try version comparison when the expected value looks like a version; fall back to string comparison if parsing fails |

@coderabbitai Outside-diff comment on docs/contributor/validator.md:115 (equality fallback) is addressed in 19b8167: the ==/!= row now says version comparison applies only when the expected value looks like a version and both sides parse, otherwise string comparison (pkg/constraints/expr/expr.go OperatorEQ/OperatorNE branches).

MINOR: --require-gpu still changes placement with --privileged=false: on a mixed CPU/GPU cluster without an explicit selector, it suppresses GPU-node auto-selection, while the restricted Job requests no GPU. The Job can therefore run on a CPU node, so “ignored” is inaccurate here and in agent-deployment.md:148.

Minimum correction: state that restricted mode adds no GPU request but the flag still disables automatic GPU-node selection.

Agreed, and verified: maybeInjectGPUNodeSelector returns early on RequireGPU without checking Privileged, while the nvidia.com/gpu limit is only added in applyPrivilegedSettings. Fixed in 7a967c5: cli-reference.md and agent-deployment.md now say restricted mode adds no GPU request but still disables automatic GPU-node selection, and point to --node-selector.

MINOR: The documented v0.22.0 module pin cannot provide the newly listed skip-check projection: its ValidateSettings type lacks SkipChecks, and that release has no WithValidationSkipChecks option. A downstream caller forwarding this setting cannot compile against the recommended pin. The existing newer-than-pin note names only GKEGPUPoolsPath.

Minimum correction: explicitly qualify skip-check projection as newer than v0.22.0.

Agreed, and verified: v0.22.0 has no SkipChecks field on ValidateSettings and no WithValidationSkipChecks option; the other nine options exist at that tag. Fixed in 7a967c5: the ValidateSettings section now says skip checks is newer than the v0.22.0 pin, so nine reach ValidateState at that pin.
