Summary

Fixes the drift a full-repo docs audit found, ahead of v1.0.0-rc1: wrong examples, stale facts, and broken reader paths in the user, integrator, contributor, root, and demo docs. Also fixes Go doc comments and --help text that no docs gate checks. No behavior changes.

Motivation / Context

The audit (run at 8c53a74) re-checked every hand-authored Markdown file against the code. The automated gates held up: links, make targets, and CLI flag tables were all clean. What they miss is example behavior, value paths, version pins, Go doc comments, --help text, and duplicated copies that drift apart. Every changed claim here was re-verified against the current source. Where it could be done hermetically, the corrected command was run with a binary built from this branch (--no-cluster, offline recipe/bundle, local aicrd).

Fixes: #3052
Related: N/A

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update
  • Refactoring (no functional changes)
  • Build/CI/tooling

Component(s) Affected

  • CLI (cmd/aicr, pkg/cli): --help text and package godoc only
  • API server (cmd/aicrd, pkg/server)
  • Recipe engine / data (pkg/recipe): godoc only
  • Bundlers (pkg/bundler, pkg/component/*): godoc only
  • Collectors / snapshotter (pkg/collector, pkg/snapshotter)
  • Validator (pkg/validator)
  • Core libraries (pkg/errors, pkg/k8s)
  • Docs/examples (docs/, examples/)
  • Other: root docs, .claude/CLAUDE.md/AGENTS.md, issue/PR templates, demos/, Makefile/Tilt dev targets, api/aicr/v1/server.yaml (one example value)

Implementation Notes

Examples that failed when run

  • Slinky Slurm storage/enroot/accounting: all 7 aicr bundle examples exited 2 because those components set requireNodeSelector. They now pass both selector flags, and bundling.md explains the requirement.
  • cli-reference.md: --set examples used value paths the charts don't have (written silently, ignored at install). The agent image was pinned to v0.19.0, which writes snapshots HEAD rejects. "Complete Workflow" ran a full validate before deploying; it now runs --no-cluster before deploy and --phase deployment after. Sample constraints used non-catalog paths.
  • recipe-development.md Quick Start overwrote a shipped overlay and named a values file that doesn't exist.
  • automation.md patterns had no install step; the GitOps pattern never checked out the repo or ran aicr verify.
  • kwok/README.md: kind: recipeMetadata (the loader is case-sensitive).

Wrong facts

  • validation.md: validate needs effectively cluster-admin (each run binds cluster-admin), not just Job/ConfigMap rights.
  • agent-deployment.md: restored the "GPU Node Auto-Targeting" section that cli-reference.md links to (deleted in docs: audit-driven dedup, drift fixes, and new guides #1334). Dropped the "GPU Operator installed" prerequisite, which contradicted "snapshot before deploying the GPU Operator".
  • contributor/validator.md: five env vars (including AICR_REQUIRE_SCOPED_INFERENCE_GATEWAY) are forwarded only from the shell, never from the catalog entry.
  • contributor/tests.md, RELEASE.md: E2E is hermetic chainsaw --no-cluster, not real-cloud.
  • contributor/index.md, component.md: chart pins go to registry defaultVersion. An overlay pin fails TestOverlayVersionPinsMatchRegistry.
  • uat.md: examples now use aws-h100-ct-2, since aws-h100 has no capacity.
  • deprecations.md: added the two live CLI deprecation warnings (bundle-time allocation-policy keys, legacy slinky-slurm:accounting.enabled) as Active entries. The apiVersion entries' "removal has happened" wording is left for the v1.0.0 tag step, which moves them to Removed.
  • Smaller fixes: k8s-aibom opt-out overlays, upgrade-check --from cluster RBAC, TestGrid marked as planned (not live), air-gap note for agent/validator images, --emit-attestation under --no-cluster (rejected, not ignored), cluster-values.yaml in every Helm folder, --repo with Flux, OKE profile lock, API GET params, INTERNAL error code, supply-chain identities pinned to the tag, any matching semantics, v1 snapshots, NetworkPolicy DNS/egress, ingress-nginx annotation, missing packages and env vars in contributor/integrator tables, go-library.md missing facade surfaces plus ~317 lines moved out from under the wrong heading.
  • Godoc and --help: pkg/cli/doc.go (nonexistent --osv, wrong global flags, wrong exit codes, AICR_LOG_LEVEL claim), bundle --help (argocd-helm, NNN- folders), snapshot --no-cleanup (run-scoped ClusterRole, not cluster-admin), validate --help (predicate v3), and the AICR_LOG_LEVEL comments in pkg/logging/pkg/deprecation. Also three Go comments citing files that don't exist.

Root and agent docs

  • .claude/CLAUDE.md/AGENTS.md: corrected the label guidance (enhancement exists; added theme/resilience), added ErrCodeCanceled, made the pod.GetPodLogs/StreamLogs snippets compile, and made the lint list match the Makefile.
  • Issue forms now set type: (Bug/Enhancement/Documentation) and no longer apply labels that don't exist. The PR template asks for -s -S.
  • make server and Tilt set AICR_LOG_LEVEL (the server ignores LOG_LEVEL). Removed the unused 9090 metrics port (metrics are on 8080).
  • Removed the dead make demos (its .tape inputs were never in git) and make changelog-file (tools/changelog dropped --file in refactor: code quality and consistency cleanup #1126) targets.
  • CONTRIBUTING.md: PR/claim caps described as policy, enforcement pending (Require linked issues, cap open PRs and claims, and expire idle claims #3014). Added fork/upstream setup.

Demos

  • vllm-agg.yaml no longer ships a Queue that repoints the platform's dynamo queue to a zero-quota parent.
  • CUJ assumptions now include the cpu-worker pool and the EBS CSI prerequisite.
  • Removed a ClusterImagePolicy slide that rejected every AICR image.
  • UAT network names and the GHCR owner are now variables. Fixed the end-to-end-cli fixture.
  • Corrected stale counts, the bundle-attestation cause and tamper output, and the evidence jq/pipefail pattern.

Deliberately not in this PR

  • The audit's consolidation recommendations (~6-7k lines that could be cut or moved to the owning page) and the drift-prevention tooling (generated flag/env tables, docs-claims check on Go comments, version-pin lint).
  • File removals: inference-perf-fluctuation.md and testgrid.md stay in the nav; demo image prompts and CUJ2-Test-Report.md stay.
  • The README "Supported Environments" table.

Follow-ups found while fixing (not docs, not done here)

  • tests/uat/lib/phases.sh and pkg/evidence/cncf/scripts/manifests/dynamo-vllm-agg.yaml apply the same queue-repointing Queue as the demo did.
  • .github/workflows/issue-report.yaml and triage.yaml key on bug/feature/documentation labels that don't exist; they should read the issue type.
  • uat-run.yaml comments say the argocd guard is "aws-h100-scoped"; the code guards on cloud.

Testing

make qualify

make qualify passes in a clean detached worktree at the PR HEAD (rc=0, "Codebase qualification completed"). An earlier run hit TestApplyCRDsScript_BoundsStalledApply (2s timing bounds) while nine agents were compiling and testing on the same machine; it passes 3/3 alone, and this PR does not touch pkg/bundler/deployer.

Go changes are comments and --help/usage strings only, so coverage is unchanged. cli-surface.golden doesn't record usage text, so no golden changed. golangci-lint on every touched package: 0 issues. go test ./pkg/cli -run TestDocs, ./pkg/server -run Doc, tools/check-agents-sync, check-docs-mdx, and check-docs-mdx-parse all pass. Every relative link and anchor added or changed resolves.

Risk Assessment

  • Low — Isolated change, well-tested, easy to revert
  • Medium — Touches multiple components or has broader impact
  • High — Breaking change, affects critical paths, or complex rollout

Rollout notes: Docs and comments only, apart from the dev-only Makefile/Tilt changes (AICR_LOG_LEVEL, two dead targets removed, unused 9090 port removed) and the demo manifest's Queue removal.

Checklist

  • Tests pass locally (make test with -race)
  • Linter passes (make lint)
  • I did not skip/disable tests to make CI green
  • I added/updated tests for new functionality
  • I updated docs if user-facing behavior changed
  • Changes follow existing patterns in the codebase
  • Commits are cryptographically signed (git commit -S) — GPG signing info

Explanation

The pull request contains unrelated repository-process and local-development changes. The GitHub issue and pull-request templates change labels, issue types, component choices, and signing requirements. Makefile removes changelog-file and demos targets and changes the local server environment variable. tilt/Tiltfile, tilt/k8s/deployment.yaml, and tilt/k8s/service.yaml change local metrics exposure and deployment settings. These changes do not correct the factual documentation drift in [#3052].

Resolution

Remove the unrelated template, Makefile, and Tilt changes from this pull request, or move them to separate pull requests with appropriate linked issues. Keep documentation corrections and directly supporting demo, Go comment, and CLI help changes in this pull request.

Review comments at @demos/private-signing.md:
- Line 49: Update the AICR_VERSION assignment in the private-signing
instructions to fetch the default release tag only when AICR_VERSION is empty,
preserving any caller-supplied RC tag.

Review comments at @docs/contributor/index.md:
- Line 104: Update the “Pin a chart version” guidance in the contributor index
to state that overlay-pin exemptions currently apply only to Helm version
divergences; do not imply that Kustomize tag pins can be exempted. Keep the
existing `helm.defaultVersion` and `kustomize.defaultTag` guidance, but clarify
the exemption’s Helm-only scope.
- Line 350: Complete the ADR description in the docs/design bullet by adding the

Review comments at @docs/contributor/validator.md:

using a non-allowlisted pod-certificate projection userAnnotations path, and
assert that redaction collapses it to the userAnnotations map path.

Review comments at @docs/integrator/supply-chain-verification.md:
- Line 1132: Clarify the verification guarantee near the GitHub attestation API
fallback: state that independence from API availability and rate limits applies
to registry-backed verification, while the API fallback may fail during an
outage. Distinguish the API retrieval path from the `cosign verify-attestation`
registry-backed path.

Review comments at @docs/user/cli-reference.md:
- Line 1105: Update the `--no-cluster` CLI reference description to clarify that
it skips validator RBAC and Job deployment but still uses Kubernetes API access
to load `cm://` inputs such as `cm://gpu-operator/aicr-snapshot`; do not
describe this workflow as fully offline.

Review comments at @docs/user/validation.md:
- Around line 968-972: Update the validator-image guidance in the documentation
so the fail-closed behavior is stated as the default, and explain that
`--allow-mutable-validator-tags` is an explicit opt-out for disposable evidence.
Keep the existing conditions for mutable images accurate.

Review comments at @tests/e2e/README.md:
- Line 61: Add a blank line between the closing fenced block and “Plus: Docker.”
in the README so the Markdown satisfies MD031.
