Flyoobe 3.03 - Windows setup, the Control Panel way

Tip

Meet Bloatynosy

Windows turns things on behind your back. This turns them off again.

Check your PC, see what the catalogue found, tick what should go. Nothing changes until you say so. ~1 MB, no runtime, no telemetry.

Try Bloatynosy

What's new in 3.03?

  • [Added] Setup rating - a base score for how far this PC follows Flyoobe's recommendations, in the shape of the old Windows Experience Index. Reachable from the first row under "Your choices" on the overview, which carries the score itself
  • [Added] The details pane lists the settings that actually differ, instead of just counting them
  • [Added] "More options" is a heading of its own now, so the link below it reads as a link
  • [Changed] The device row says what it configures instead of showing the machine name
  • [Changed] The summary line names the preinstalled apps again, and shares its text with the tree row so the two can no longer disagree
  • [Changed] Counts say what they are counting, here settings in the summary, areas in the group headers
  • [Changed] The setup tree uses the Explorer theme: arrows instead of +/- boxes, softer selection, hover highlight
  • [Changed] The search field names the page you are on "Search Control Panel", "Search Flyoobe" on the overview
  • [Added] A (x) to clear the search, shown only while there is something to clear
  • [Fixed] The settings page scrolls all the way down again
  • [Changed] Dropped the "?" from the settings header
  • [Changed] The AI section no longer talks as if explanations only exist on the tweaks page
  • [Changed] Version in the status bar without the "v"
  • [Added] French translation
  • [Added] Portuguese (Brazil) translation

Optional Setup Actions download

Setup Actions are provided as an optional release asset, so the main Flyoobe download stays small and focused.

To install them

  1. Download the Actions asset from the release page
  2. Extract the included Actions folder into Flyoobe’s Data folder
  3. Open Flyoobe and go to Settings > Advanced
  4. Enable Setup Actions
  5. Close Settings to load the newly installed actions

After finishing the new core, I still felt that the interface was missing some character. So I borrowed a little from what is probably my favorite era of Windows UI, and quite possibly yours too

Flyoobe 3.02

The Windows 7 detour

  • [Changed] Introduced a lightweight Windows 7-inspired navigation header
  • [Added] A central Explorer-style search field beside the breadcrumb
  • [Added] Search support for Overview, recommendations, apps, preinstalled apps and Setup Actions
  • [Changed] Settings moved up into that header as a gear button sitting right
next to the breadcrumb. The separate button at the bottom of the Overview is gone.
Two doors into the same room never made much sense.
  • [Changed] The hint line in the reading pane now pays attention to what you
picked instead of always pointing at Settings. On rule pages it offers to have
the AI explain the thing in plain words. Elsewhere it points at Setup Actions.
Flyoobe_kPTQVHs6Bq

New features

  • [Added] An optional change log. Every single thing Flyoobe changes on your
machine can now be written to a plain text file
. which rule, which registry value,
what was there before, what it is now. Same for apps installed through winget,
preinstalled apps removed, and Setup Actions that ran. Recipes are covered
automatically because they go through the same code
  • [Added] Switch and a direct "open the file" button under Advanced settings.
Off by default. A tool that rewrites your registry should not also start keeping
files about your PC unless you said so.

New rules

  • [Added] New Updates rule category. The static half of the old Flyoobe 2
"Windows Update Tamer" script is plain registry rules now, no PowerShell needed:
keep the long pause window available, never reboot while someone is signed in,
download updates but wait for a click, skip driver updates, no scheduled restart.
Microsoft is only now getting around to fixing this
in an Insider build. Until that actually ships, these are the switches that work today.
Heads up: the automatic-update policies are Pro territory and Home may quietly ignore them.
  • [Added] Rule to hide the Phone Link companion pane in the Start menu.
    It arrived with KB5052094
    and now covers iPhone too,
which is why it started turning up uninvited. Clears the pane toggle and the
    companion registration in one go.

Fixes

  • [Fixed] Windows 10 rules no longer show up on Windows 11, or the other way round.
OsVersion was being read and then ignored, so about ten rules sat in the list on
machines where they could not do anything, reporting themselves as "not applied"
forever. They get dropped when the catalog loads now, so they are never scanned or shown.
  • [Fixed] The detail text in the Overview stopped wrapping at high DPI. It was
boxed in by a hardcoded pixel width that never scaled, so at 150% you had to drag
the splitter just to read it. It measures itself properly now.
  • [Fixed] Improved spacing on high-DPI displays
  • [Fixed] Improved breadcrumb and navigation scaling
  • [Fixed] Added missing scrollbars when Settings content no longer fits
  • [Fixed] Improved resizing across the Overview, Browser and Settings pages
  • [Fixed] Restored native progress feedback without blocking or freezing the interface
  • [Changed] Progress indicators now sit along the upper page edge, directly below
    the main navigation

Optional Setup Actions download

Setup Actions are provided as an optional release asset, so the main Flyoobe download stays small and focused.

Setup Actions, native controls and a little Windows 7 nostalgia

One day old, years in the making 😄

Flyoobe 3.0 may only be about a day old, but believe me: it did not appear overnight. The ideas, experiments, deleted code and questionable coffee decisions behind it are considerably older

The original Flyoobe had plenty of personality. It was colourful, flexible and sometimes a little chaotic but that was also part of its charm. With version 3.0, I did not want to reproduce every old page and feature one by one. I wanted to bring back what made the original fun while giving it a smaller, clearer and much more reliable core

The result already surpasses the old version by miles. It is lighter, easier to understand, easier to maintain and now far more expandable than before. At the same time, a few familiar ideas are finding their way home again only this time with cleaner boundaries and considerably fewer opportunities for me to regret them six months later

The first release has made me more motivated than ever to take Flyoobe to the next level. Apparently the best way to move forward was to look back for a moment, borrow a little Windows 7 charm and remember why I started building this app in the first place

This release also brings the original spelling back home: Flyoobe. Not FlyOOBE, not an acronym that looks as if it is shouting at you, just Flyoobe. Or Fly-oh-bee, if you want to make the little bee happy

Flyoobe-Intro.mp4

Setup Actions, native controls and a little Windows 7 nostalgia

I originally wanted Flyoobe to stay small and focused. Then Setup Actions happened

Setup Actions

Setup Actions turn Flyoobe into an expandable post-install toolbox without turning the application itself into a giant collection of hard-coded features

  • [Added] Support for local PowerShell-based Setup Actions
  • [Added] Dynamic action choices, drop-down menus and optional input fields
  • [Added] Live script output instead of making users stare at a frozen window and hope for the best
  • [Added] Recipe-safe actions that can be exported and executed as part of a recipe
  • [Added] An action importer and direct access to the local Actions folder
  • [Added] Documentation for writing and sharing custom actions
  • [Changed] Setup Actions are isolated from the Flyoobe core and can be disabled completely
  • [Changed] Actions now use their own folders and metadata instead of relying on loose scripts
  • [Changed] Script execution and live output are handled by a smaller, dedicated runner
  • [Fixed] PowerShell progress messages no longer appear as unreadable CLIXML
  • [Fixed] Script output now appears while an action is running instead of only after it has finished

In other words: I added a door without rebuilding the entire house around every person who might eventually walk through it.

A more familiar interface

After finishing the new core, I still felt that the interface was missing some character. So I borrowed a little from what is probably my and quite possibly everyones favourite era of Windows UI

The new interface takes inspiration from Windows 7:

  • [Added] A lightweight Explorer-style navigation bar with Back, Forward and breadcrumbs
  • [Added] Filled breadcrumb separators inspired by the Windows 7 Explorer
  • [Added] A subtle Windows 7-style blue-to-green accent
  • [Added] Native scrollbars on pages that genuinely need additional space
  • [Changed] The dense overview table was replaced with simple expandable native groups
  • [Changed] Matching recommendations stay collapsed while items needing attention remain visible
  • [Changed] Page headings, white content areas and grey command footers now follow the classic Windows layout more closely
  • [Changed] Navigation is now shared by the main window, so individual pages no longer need their own Back buttons
  • [Changed] The bottom command area now runs cleanly from left to right
  • [Changed] Everything continues to use standard Windows controls, so no custom skins and no owner-drawn imitation controls
  • [Fixed] Buttons and fields are no longer clipped when the window becomes too small
  • [Fixed] Unnecessary scrollbars no longer appear on responsive pages such as the Overview
  • [Fixed] The Settings button remains visible instead of disappearing beyond the right edge
  • [Fixed] Several inconsistent margins, headers, footers and page layouts were cleaned up

The older I get, the more I appreciate old software. Apparently nostalgia is just usability after it has passed a sufficiently long code review

Flyoobe still looks like a modern utility, but it now carries a little of the clarity, colour and friendliness that made Windows 7 feel so effortless.

More changes

  • [Added] Support for additional Flyoobe*.ini rule databases placed in the Data folder
  • [Added] A dedicated database section in Settings showing every loaded database and its number of entries
  • [Changed] The application name is now consistently written as Flyoobe
  • [Changed] The About page now includes the unofficially official pronunciation: Fly-oh-bee
  • [Changed] Service classes and core components received clearer, more personal documentation
  • [Changed] Setup Actions, recipes and rule databases remain separate from the core wherever possible
  • [Fixed] Various dead code, redundant paths and unnecessary complexity were removed

🐝Flyoobe 3.0 - the comeback release

flyoobe

Flyoobe is back, but this time much smaller, clearer and less interested in rebuilding half of Windows

Version 3.0 turns the old page-heavy setup assistant into a native, signature-driven Windows checklist. It shows what is currently configured, what differs from the recommendations and lets you change only the things you actually care about.

Personal choices are not judged, red does not mean broken, and nothing happens without confirmation.

Changelog

New Features

  • New spelling, same bee: The app is now styled Flyoobe instead of FlyOOBE and pronounced “Fly-oh-bee.”
  • [Added] A completely new overview showing Windows settings, apps, personalization, bloatware and system tasks in one place.
  • [Added] Signature-driven Windows configuration powered by the editable Flyoobe.ini
  • [Added] Portable FlyOOBE recipes that can save, import, review and apply a complete setup on another PC
  • [Added] Recipe review mode with a visible summary and the option to discard staged changes
  • [Added] Individual Apply and Restore default actions for every supported Windows setting
  • [Added] A searchable winget app installer powered by the editable Apps.ini
  • [Added] Detection and optional removal of matching preinstalled Windows apps using Bloatware.ini
  • [Added] Browser setup with installed-browser detection and quick access to Windows default-app settings
  • [Added] Native personalization controls for Windows mode, app mode, taskbar alignment, transparency and wallpaper
  • [Added] Quick access to account, device, network and Windows Update workflows without rebuilding Windows Settings.
  • [Added] The isolated Flyby11 upgrade path for Windows 10 PCs that do not meet every Windows 11 requirement
  • [Added] Read-only checks for TPM, Secure Boot, memory, architecture, storage and Windows version before an upgrade
  • [Added] Optional AI explanations for individual settings. AI can explain a rule, but it cannot apply one
  • [Added] JSON-based localization with English and German included. More languages can be dropped into the localization folder

Improvements

  • [Improved] The whole app now uses a much simpler native WinForms interface
  • [Improved] Navigation no longer opens a collection of separate windows; views stay inside the main window
  • [Improved] The overview now separates recommendations from personal choices instead of rating everything as good or bad
  • [Improved] Bloatware matches are scanned automatically, counted in the overview and clearly marked for review
  • [Improved] The result summary is shorter and easier to read at a glance
  • [Improved] Theme changes are sent to Windows immediately without requiring an Explorer restart
  • [Improved] Better scaling and layouts for high-DPI displays and longer translated text
  • [Improved] The codebase is split into small views and services, while the configuration stays outside the executable wherever possible

Bug Fixes

  • [Changed] FlyOOBE no longer tries to become another giant Windows optimizer
  • [Changed] Heavy features already handled well by Windows now open the matching native Windows workflow
  • [Changed] Recommendations, app catalogs, bloatware signatures and upgrade limits live in separate editable data files
  • [Changed] Imported recipes stage their choices first, so they can be reviewed before anything is applied
  • [Fixed] Several designer, localization and navigation issues found during the FlyOOBE 3.0 rebuild

Flyoobe 3.0 does not replace Windows Setup. It gives you a shorter route through it

🐝 FlyOOBE – Guided Setup & Upgrade Experience for Windows

Flyoobe24

Side project plug

Try Winslop, a cheeky Windows 11 cleanup/tweaks tool, inspired by the whole “Microslop” era and Nadella’s “slop vs sophistication” line

FlyOOBE 2.4 is here!

Happy New Year 🎉

As we head into 2026, I want to say thank you to everyone using and supporting FlyOOBE.
In 2025, FlyOOBE reached nearly 2.5 million downloads on (only) GitHub and became one of the most popular and requested tools for Windows 11.

Your feedback, issues, and ideas helped shape the project throughout the year.
Let's see if we can do it again in 2026.

Changelog

“We need to get beyond the arguments of slop vs sophistication…” - Satya Nadella
Agreed, but users still deserve a choice!!! The AI OOBE control has been refined and is now officially called Slopilot.
Slopilot isnt anti-AI - it's pro user choice

  • This update improves detection of AI-related (Slopilot) features across Windows 11 and adds optional deep cleanup capabilities via external tooling such as RemoveWindowsAI.
Users can now better understand, review, and disable AI components they dont want, transparently and on their own terms
  • Improved browser detection in the Browser OOBE
  • Updated Extensions engine for better coverage and accuracy
  • Global search functionality expanded and refined across all sections
  • Improved theme detection in the Personalization OOBE
  • Minor core optimizations and internal cleanups

FlyOOBE 2.3 is here!

  • I mentioned this in the last FlyOOBE release: I’m going to take care of CrapFixer as well. The plan now is to connect both apps a lot better, because CrapFixer is simply better at some things than the OOBE part inside FlyOOBE and vice versa, FlyOOBE is still the all-rounder.
For quick debloating though, CrapFixer is the better tool, so it’ll be taking over a few modular functions. especially some of FlyOOBE’s advanced/extended stuff. I’m announcing that here in FlyOOBE now, and the upcoming CrapFixer release will learn about it too. So this release lays the foundation for FlyOOBE ↔ CrapFixer interconnect. Internal structures were prepared so both apps can communicate and share modular functionality more cleanly going forward
  • Laid the groundwork for a multilingual UI.
No promises on timing yet. Im not sure when I’ll get to it, or whether CrapFixer or FlyOOBE will get it first. It's a lot of tedious work… you probably believe me 😄

Flyoobe22

FlyOOBE 2.2 is here!

  • Polished the action buttons with a modern compact mode: show icon + label by default, then switch to a sleek icon-only look while active (just like native Windows 11 apps)
  • Further sped up app startup and trimmed memory usage, not that it was ever a bloated XAML/WinUI monster like the Windows 11 Start menu or Explorer… but hey, every millisecond counts (yes, Im currently at war with Microsofts performance choices. Maybe one day theyll fix real performance issues instead of adding another glowing Copilot button. And honestly, it hurts watching an OS you once loved slowly being run into the ground by the wrong priorities and decisions; lets see how long it takes until they manage to chase me away to another shore as well)
  • Flyby11 is back in its classic outfit inside FlyOOBE: the UpgradeOOBE (Flyby11) UI has been simplified and brought closer to the original look, while the built-in Autopilot has been upgraded to guide you more autonomously through the Windows 11 installation
Note: The ConsumerESU script from https://github.com/abbodi1406/ConsumerESU/
is currently unavailable on GitHub (either removed or temporarily blocked, similar to a past false-positive suspension that also briefly affected my own profile)

Spent so much time and energy on FlyOOBE that I almost forgot about my old buddy CrapFixer. Its definitely due for a glow-up as well, if you dont know it yet, check it out here: https://github.com/builtbybel/CrapFixer, basically CCleaner 2.0 from the golden Windows XP era.

Flyoobe21

FlyOOBE 2.1 is here!

Well,i'll admit it: I really dont like leaving things half-finished.

So after spending the last few days locked at home with a stubborn cold, I decided to put that time to use fueled by way too much hot chocolate… ehm, coffee ;)
Somewhere between caffeine, code, and questionable sleep schedules, FlyOOBE 2.0 went from "Preview chaos" to something unexpectedly stable and actually quite nice.

This release marks a major milestone, not just a redesign, but a redefinition
FlyOOBE has grown from a simple OOBE setup assistant into a true all-in-one Windows companion.
With the new modular engine, extensions are evolving into mini-apps within the app, offering powerful customization, automation, and personalization tools for Windows 11.
Some OOBE pages have already transformed into fully functional mini-apps themselves and a few names might sound familiar to long-time users, like Dumputer or CoTweaker.
(Those were once standalone apps… I'm not entirely sure what happened to them, but now their lightweight successors live on inside FlyOOBE's setup pages)

It's cleaner, smarter, and more unified, a platform slowly becoming an all-round control and enhancement hub for both enthusiasts and everyday users.

Well then… good night for now, at least for the next few hours 😅

What's new in 2.1

The UI introduced back in version 2.0 has now been fully finalized and cleaned up once more. The main form hasn’t looked this polished in a long time. You can now seamlessly switch between the OOBE and Extensions.

Going forward, the focus will shift even more toward Extensions, so a clean UI arrives at just the right time.

  • Several debloating/cleanup modules have been bumped to a higher tier and now dig up even more (and even deeper) AI-infused junk. Still no AgenticOS takeover in sight- but with Microsoft’s latest moves… let’s just say: enjoy the peace while it lasts ;)
  • Memory usage reduced even further
  • Fixed various DPI-related issues
  • Optimized extension loading
  • Extensive code refactoring
The full source code for v2 will be pushed soon

Well then… good night for now, at least for the next few hours 😅

What's new in 2.0

  • Modernized and simplified Interface: cleaner, more focused, and less overwhelming, making the initial setup much easier for new and casual users
  • Improved perfomance: The app is faster and more responsive, with reduced loading times and better resource management
  • Extensions engine completely reworked under the hood, now using a new internal filtering system with a category dropdown.
  • A brand-new app icon finally featuring a smart, friendly little bee inside 🐝 (I might've cheated a bit and let AI help with that one 😉)
  • Improved global search and refresh behavior for smoother control updates across views
  • New centralized Home dashboard that intelligently categorizes and recommends OOBE setup pages and extensions. Many items are now discoverable via keyword tags. (The first experimental Copilot integration has been temporarily removed while refined.)
  • Large-scale refactoring and transition to primarily asynchronous processing. Search, filtering, and loading operations no longer cause UI hangs
  • New back navigation system with a full stack-based history, allowing you to rewind through previous pages just like in a browser
  • Extensions shipped with the app can now also be uninstalled just like user-added ones
  • New native activity monitor logs system actions in real time and can provide contextual help for extensions (when supported).
  • Improved UI scaling and clarity on high-DPI displays
  • New indexing system for all OOBE pages and extensions based on metadata, allowing tools like Flyby11 to be found using simple keywords such as ESU, 10, or 11
  • New modern Copilot-inspired designs can now be found in the settings menu
  • Extensions.md has been updated accordingly
  • Dozens of Minor Fixes and Quality Improvements

FlyOOBE v2.0 Preview – New UI Overhaul

I'm currently working on FlyOOBE 2.0 (Preview), featuring a completely redesigned interface focused on simplicity and clarity.
While FlyOOBE originally started as a pure OOBE setup assistant, it has steadily evolved into a flexible customization and modding toolkit.
Through extensions and user-created modules, FlyOOBE is becoming a kind of all-in-one Windows 11 control and enhancement hub – lightweight, extensible, and built for power users and casual users alike.

  • Modernized UI: cleaner, more focused, and less overwhelming, making the initial setup much easier for new and casual users.
  • Extensions engine completely reworked under the hood, now using a new internal filtering system with a category dropdown.
  • Extensions.md has been updated accordingly
  • Numerous small fixes and refinements throughout the application
  • New app icon in progress. The updated in-app logo is already included; the .ico file for the executable will follow soon

I'd love for the community to try it out and share feedback while this Preview evolves.

More improvements coming soon.

See you in the next build 👋
