Weather reprieve!
Oct. 11th, 2026 06:08 pmI got outside for a bike ride today for the first time in 2 weeks! Our 93-100 degree stint finally ended. It was a nice ride, too. Great temperature and not a lot of wind. If all goes well, we'll have about 3 more days of this. Then the temps will go back up to 87-90 for about 4 days. I wish Fall in Sacramento were more like actual Fall...
I finished watching Silo, and now I'm sorry I was in such a hurry. I thought I had two seasons worth of backlog, but it was only one. A lot of very surprising twists happened in S3, which was great. But I want more!
Still reading Chuck Wendig's The Calamities, which is still proving a challenge. There's a lot of worldbuilding (looks like it's the first book in a future series?), and it's told in sections that switch between (so far) four different POVs. I mentioned before that the they/them chapters were hard to parse. Bring me xe/xir or zie/zir, please! That whole aspect of the book also feels kind of performative. And? Each chapter begins with an excerpt of real or faked-up poetry/literature/journal entries, so there's a new context to acquire each time. Possibly, I am just getting old and my brain is less elastic now. :O I've been reading it for over a week, and I'm only 70% finished.
My next book needs to be something less dense, though I'm not sure what that will wind up being. Definitely not The Devils, which sounds like more of the same. Another Mike Chen? Or one of the many mysteries in my library wish list? It depends on what's available. It'll take me at least three more days to finish the current book, so I don't know if I want to check out something now or wait a few days?
Sometime soon, I need to crack open my ballot and see what and who is on it. The thickness of the voter's guide is pretty daunting, though. Voting in California is not for the faint of heart! I still remember the year when we had almost 30 propositions/measures/bonds in one voting cycle. Holy crap! I'm hoping this year will be significantly less bad. :O
