| | cold | ] | I live in a very cold climate (To me, at least, as a native Californian), so the plants that are outside most of the summer come inside the apartment in the winter. We get decent sun before the afternoon but after that it gets pretty shady. I mostly have ferns, for this reason. However I've managed to keep a chive plant pretty happy and I miss having herbs. Any suggestions for herbs (or other edible goodies) that might work in a situation such as this? |

I plan to make a tipsy pot herb garden, like so:
but larger (more pots, of all different sizes.)
I live in zone 9, Central florida, & I am new to "edible" gardening so this is my start, next is a veggie garden, so any advice on herbs? Id like a few that are scented, a few that I can use for tea's or medicinal purposes, a few that a rare (but not extremely hard to grow, as Im new at this.), So what are your favorites? any tricks you have to growing herbs? anything?
x-posted once or twice, sorry for cluttering up your friends page. |

| best place to keep basil inside |

Hello!
Where is the best sort of place to keep potted basil indoors?
I had some tiny plants going strong in a window box that got good sunlight the first half of the day, but after a 5 day stint of no one being home to water or tend to them, they've croaked. I'm wondering if it was more than just not being watered.
I bought a larger plant and need to re-pot it, hopefully it will have better stamina since it is larger. Should I keep it in the sunny window or would somewhere else be best? |

| | cheerful | ] | Hi all. I have been growing herbs for year but the last two summers I have been dealing with what grows where I know live.
I have a question about tarragon.
Tell me all you know. Where should it be located? How to tell the difference between French and Russian tarragon? I have become addicted to the anise like taste of the French tarragon.
What bug likes basil? |

| | curious | ] | i am new here and i thought i'd just introduce myself and tell you all why i joined so here goes:
My name is Lene and i'm 24 years old. I've never had a garden before. Then last August i moved into this nice little house with a little garden. and i have a dream that i want both pretty, colourful flowers in it as well as herbs and vegetables. the woman who lived here before me was old and she was unable to take care of the garden the last years she lived here so now i'm kind of stuck with this jungle. LOL. but i want to make it a good and useful garden that i can take care of and enjoy.
the reason i joined this community is that i want to learn more about which herbs i could put in my garden and what they can be used for. i am mainly up for herbs that are good for your skin, digestion, joints and muscles. but i hope to end up with herbs that are good for so many more things. :D |

| Basil :( |

So I planted two Italian Basils this year, and a cinnamon Basil which was given to me by a friend. Of the two Italian Basils, one has already died, the two remaining (cinnamon and Italian) are BOTH horribly wilted. They get plenty of sun, and the same amount of water as the rest of my garden. (Which is quite a bit, the garden is close to a large tree that sucks up a lot of water!)
I've done some online research and all I can come up with is fusarium wilt. If that's the case, shouldn't my other plants be affected? I have various herbs, peppers and the like in the same garden.
What should I do? Dig up the basil and replant in containers? Toss them out? Fertilize? I'm so annoyed that I keep losing basil plants. >:(

Hey all, I'm curious as to which books are good for info on the actual planting needs of individual herbs, rather than their magical or historical associations as many Pagan herb books are big on? My herb garden looks dreadful, and I'm really looking for some good resources on the more mundane side of herb gardening - how to keep them in optimal health. I'm also looking for a hardy, clinging/climbing creeper that would grow quickly indoors, if anyone's got any ideas. |
