Theres always
next year with a healthier roster. RIP 2006 Jaguar's Playoffs hopes. Not to be a racist, because im clearly not, but is it not time for a white quarterback in the franchise? Think hard. Its just been a general disappointment since brunell left. Sure we improved, 5-11, then 9-7, then 12-4, and now 8-8. We're regressing and we need a white quarterback to lead us to the promise land because we certainly have the supporting cast. | | Sunday, December 11th, 2005 | 3:32 pm [bryansi]

Why someone needs to be fired
This Jags/Colts game was utterly pathetic. The Colts secondary was playing shitty, so Carl "Vertical Passing Game" Smith desides to run the ball. Why? Because he's a giant fucking moron. It's week 14 and I've been waiting for this vertical passing game this motherfucker promised. Dave Campo/Mike Smith two men who supossedly have a lot of control of our defense. This is the game you've had weeks to really prepare for, you fucked up big time. Failure like this should not be tolerated. Jack Del Rio, so far you really haven't coached this team to big things. The Seahawks we faced in week 1 are much different than the Seahawks in week 14, The Bengles haven't changed much and that's where the good news ends. The Colts made us their bitch this week, the Broncos made us their bitch in week 3 and we barely beat the Steelers when TOMMY MADDOX was their QB. If all the Jags can beat while under Coach Del Rio is a bunch of shitty teams, maybe it's time to look for a new head coach. | | Sunday, November 6th, 2005 | 2:20 pm [bryansi]

People need to be fired.
Jack Del Rio - your ass is on the hot seat. Carl Smith - Read a god damn dictionary. Vertical = down field NOT SHORT LITTLE DUMP PASSES YOU DUMB SON OF A BITCH! If The Jags lose this game, they should just forfeit the season. 4-4 at the half way point, is not gonna get into the playoffs unless the Colts somehow forfeit their season. The Jags have a limited window to start doing something (this season and next season) until the Titans can make a run for the title and the Texans could theorticly make a run. For my money the Jags are the worst run franchise in the NFL. Current Mood: aggravated | | Sunday, October 30th, 2005 | 3:59 pm [bryansi]

Vertical Passing Game?
What happened to it in the late fourth quarter? Carl Smith has me unimpressed as an OC, I almost miss Musgrave at this point in the season. | | Monday, October 17th, 2005 | 12:11 am [bryansi]

Bye Week
The Jags are headed into the bye week at 4-2 here is the remaining schedule: at St. Louis (2-3) vs. Houston (0-5) vs. Baltimore (2-3) at Tennessee (2-4) at Arizona (1-4) at Cleveland (2-3) vs. Indy (5-0) vs. San Francisco (1-4) at Houston (0-5) vs. Tennessee (2-4) Remaining Opponents Total Record: 18-36* (.333 winning percentage) So right now outside of the defending division champs, everyone left on the schedule is under .500 with the Rams having a chance to be .500 with a win on Monday. I can see the Jags finishing with atleast 12 wins. St. Louis is in disarray, Houston is well Houston, Baltimore is no where near as good as they have been hyped up as being for the past few years, the Titans still don't have a running back to replace Eddie George, the Cards and the Niners are playing as well as can be expected and the Colts are in my opinion the best team in football. The only problems I see ahead are, of course, the Colts game and the Texans game at home. For some reason the Texans play very well at ALLTEL. So I feel very optimistic about the Jags spending this January working their way to winning the biggest sports prize in this country. * = I added an extra win and loss since I highly doubt the Colts and Rams will tie on Monday night. | | Saturday, October 15th, 2005 | 7:57 pm [bryansi]

What the fuck is up with the Jags today?
Since the Jags message board is slow as shit for me, I'm gonna vent here. 14-0 in the first half down to the Broncos. We have fans who boo our play calling, we have a QB who doesn't know not to shift to the shotgun when 8 guys are in the box and looking to blitz, we have to deal with crappy officating. The Jags better step it up in the second half, or I have a sad feeling this could end up being a loooooooooooonnnng season. | | Tuesday, August 30th, 2005 | 10:37 am [gracethe_mormon]

Hello All My name is Phil. I'm 15 and I live in New York. I've been a big Jags fan for about 6 years or so Last season I watched every game on DirectTv, and I think we have a great squad this season. Is it just me or does anyone else realize that we have a really hard schedule? | | Thursday, April 28th, 2005 | 10:42 am [necks_1978]

From Fox Sports He has been compared with Drew Bennett, Todd Heap, and Steve Young. Ted Hendricks, even. Maybe Matt Jones will develop into a combination of all those players -- and maybe he'll be part Lance Armstrong, part Achilles and part Spider-Man, too. But still, the Jaguars took him way too high for my liking. A first-round pick is better spent on a player who is certain to be a solid contributor, even if the player will not be a star. The Patriots hit a looper to the opposite field by drafting offensive lineman Logan Mankins, but they can sleep well knowing they got on base. The Jaguars swung for the fence, and they might have hit a home run. But they also might have struck out and torn a groin.
The risk they took was unnecessary. I asked front office men from eight different teams where Jones, the Arkansas quarterback who is converting to receiver, ranked on their boards. Only one of their teams would have selected him before the third round -- that team was prepared to take Jones high in the second round -- and some would have had reservations about taking him in the third.
The fourth round is the ideal place to take a project such as Jones, who is moving to a position he never has played. An exception could have been made because he is an exception athletically. So let's say he had third-round value. The Jaguars took him with the 21st pick in the first round -- sacred territory.
|
Matt Jones was all smiles upon being the a first-round pick in this year's draft, amidst near-unanimous surprise and disdain for Jacksonville's steep investment in him. | The problem is nobody knows what Jones is capable of. One general manager described him as "a rich man's Woody Dantzler," referring to the former Clemson quarterback who came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent and now is a receiver for theFalcons . Jones might be a receiver, he might be a tight end, he might be a quarterback, and he might be nothing.
"Colleges can recruit players as athletes," the general manager says. "We can't. We don't have the time to develop them."
In a best-case scenario, Jones probably will take a couple years to learn to play receiver. Even accomplished college receivers often are slow to learn the position in the NFL. When Jones was trying to play receiver during Senior Bowl week practices, he understandably had no idea about route running. Whether he ever will is another matter.
Though Jones is fast, he might lack the short-area quickness almost all great receivers have. The Titans' Bennett, who played both quarterback and receiver in college, doesn't have Jones' speed or athleticism, but he is more fluid and has separation skills and an ability to change directions. The Steelers' Antwaan Randle El, another quarterback turned receiver, has exceptional quickness. Jones' size (6-6, 242) won't help him get in and out of breaks.
If Jones had not run a 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds, leaped 39.5 inches in the vertical jump and broad-jumped 10 feet, 9 inches, he would have been viewed more like Bennett in 2001 -- a curiosity not worth a major investment. Bennett signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent. During the 2004 season, scouts were saying Jones should be a late-round pick.
 |
| NFL insiders do not question Matt Jones' raw ability, but warn the transition from college QB to NFL wide receiver could be bumpy. | Workouts are supposed to confirm what a player shows on tape, not replace tape. But Jones went from the bottom of the draft to the top based on what he did in shorts, not pads.
"Everyone compared him to Mike Williams," another general manager says. "Jones is faster and bigger, so the thinking was, 'Why can't he be better?' "
Williams caught 176 passes for 2,570 yards and 30 touchdowns in two seasons of college football. Jones caught four balls for 58 yards in four seasons.
The Jaguars didn't pass on Williams to take Jones, but they did pass two excellent receiver prospects who are much closer to sure things -- Mark Clayton and Roddy White. Receiver wasn't a need for the Jaguars, unless they believe Reggie Williams, their first-round pick last year, is a bust. They also could have taken cornerback Fabian Washington. They could have taken a safety, either Marlin Jackson or Brodney Pool. They could have picked tight end Heath Miller.
The Jaguars chose the chef's surprise when they could have had the specialty of the house. Here's hoping they don't bite into anything hard. | 9:34 am [necks_1978]

The Draft (stolen from yahoo and nfl.com)
JAGUARS -- Of course I could stick a conditional on them, too, but I'm getting kind of tired of this gimmick, aren't you? Who would have thought that Jack Del Rio was possessed of the gambler's instinct, but that's what Matt Jones at a surprisingly high No. 21 was, wasn't it? ("And in the first round the Jacksonville Jaguars select, from the University of Arkansas, Matt Jones, quarterback or wide receiver or tight end or none of the above."). Khalif Barnes in the next round was a solid choice. Alvin Pearman two rounds later was a comfortable choice, but all the action really was at No. 1, involving the 6-6 Jones, who can fat out fly. Rd Sel# Player Pos. School 1 21 Matt Jones WR Arkansas Pat Kirwan's Analysis This is my kind of pick -- don't pass on the great athlete. I've talked to Jones 10 times since his last game, and here's what he brings to the table: A wide receiver with a limited package on day one but can play in the red zone; a tight end who can cause mismatches against safeties; a third quarterback on the active roster; a special-teams player, and he whispered in my ear once, "I'm a good long snapper." This is a pick that can change a franchise's future, and 10 minutes before the pick, his agent was worried his client wouldn't be picked in the first round. Oops. Rd Sel# Player Pos. School 2 52 Khalif Barnes OT Washington Gil Brandt's Analysis This guy initally was a D-lineman at Washington. In a period of time, they moved him to offense. He's a very athletic player but missed some games with a hand injury. He doesn't have a lot of sand in him, meaning he doesn't have a lot of lower-body weight. Rd Sel# Player Pos. School 3 87 Scott Starks CB Wisconsin Gil Brandt's Analysis Starks is a small corner with great leaping ability. A four-year starter, he's made some huge plays in his career, including one against Purdue where he recovered a fumble for a touchdown. Purdue's season went downhill after that. He's not really tall. Rd Sel# Player Pos. School 127 Alvin Pearman RB Virginia Gil Brandt's Analysis Great receiver out of the backfield -- once caught 16 passes in one game (against Florida State). He's a player in the passing game. Rd Sel# Player Pos. School 157 Gerald Sensabaugh SS North Carolina Gil Brandt's Analysis This guy has a 45-inch vertical jump, an 11-foot long jump and also some great special teams ability as a kick blocker. He really blew everyone away at the combine, but I'm not sure his measurables translate onto the football field. Rd Sel# Player Pos. School 185 Chad Owens WR Hawaii Gil Brandt's Analysis Owens is a little guy who is a great kick returner. Caught 102 passes in 2004 -- that's not a typo. Rd Sel# Player Pos. School 6 194 Pat Thomas ILB North Carolina State Gil Brandt's Analysis He's been a steady player, but not real tall. Another guy everyone thinks will fit in on special teams. Rd Sel# Player Pos. School 7 237 Chris Roberson CB Eastern Michigan Gil Brandt's Analysis This guy can run -- he's 5-10 1/4, 186 pounds and he ran a 4.3 in the 40. A cover corner with some speed. Personally I think Jones should be a TE and get rid of Kyle Brady, he is done. His career is over. | | Saturday, April 16th, 2005 | 11:42 pm [alec1115]

The Draft Although most people think that the Jaguars need to draft a Defensive End in this year's draft, I think that the Jaguars would be better off drafting an Offensive Tackle. My reasoning is this, the Jaguars have a franchise QB in Byron Leftwich, when you have a franchise QB, you MUST put together an offensive line to protect him (like what the Colts did for Peyton, the Packers for Favre, the Broncos for Elway, etc.). Last season, Leftwich tooks at least 3 hits every game that looked like he wasn't going to walk again. The Jaguars didn't protect number 7 well last year and it costed them some games. Also, we all know that Byron is probably one of the slowest QBs in the league, which means that he doesn't have the ability to run away from charging Defensive Ends. I don't know exactly who exactly the Jags should draft but if they want to be title contenders, they MUST rebuild that O-Line.

State of the Jags
The Jaguars enter the 2005 season with a boatload of free salary cap space. Current estimates are at about $30 million - but after some tendered offers they'll need to make, they'll be at about $20-22 million. Not only that, but none of their "stars" will be free agents in need of re-signing. They do, however, need to give Marcus Stroud a new contract. Which they'll be able to afford to do easily - ideally somewhat "front-loaded" so he'll count more against the 2005 cap and less so against later caps. But above that, there will be a ton of space to use to pursue top-level free agents. After getting burned by Hugh Douglas, the Jags have been hitting home runs in free agency. Deon Grant and Mike Peterson were big parts of this year's improvement. Unlike Douglas, both are young players entering their prime, not exiting it. The Jags have the money - now they need to make another couple signings happen that are as good as these were. Wide receiver and defensive end will get a lot of attention, no doubt. David Garrard wants to be traded. The Jags will if they can get a first day (3rd round or better) pick for him. It's win-win - they'll give Garrard his wish if someone's a taker, and if not, he'll stay (and can't feel bitter about it). The Jags have all of their day 1 picks intact, and if they can get an additional one for Garrard, they'll be in great draft shape. One good thing about the draft: there are a ton of 1st round defensive end prospects this year (one mock draft I saw had 6 in the 1st round). They could very well address their DE need in the 1st round. The return of Spicer and Cordova will help the DE/pass rusher situation as well. Bottom Line: Jacksonville is a 9-7 team with all of their main players returning, no missing draft picks, the possibility of picking up an extra 1st day pick, and a boatload of salary cap space. i've been an avid Jags fan ever since their second season. i'm proud of them for finishing the season with their first winning record since 1999 (9-7)! even though they failed to make the playoffs i am confident that the Jaguars will show what they're really made of next season. i will forever and always be loyal to the teal and black. ~ Emily Current Mood: cheerful | | Saturday, January 1st, 2005 | 11:50 pm [bryansi]

Jack Del Rio to replace Nick Saban?
If the rumors are true and Jack ends up leaving the Jaguars on Monday for LSU (which wouldn't surprise me) who does everyone think we should get to replace Del Rio. My choices: Jim Johnson, Eagles Defensive Coordinator. Sure he's old (66 I believe) but his defenses are brutal and considering the jobs he's done in Philly with defenses that are less talented than the current Jags, it should be interesting. Dennis Erickson, 49ers Head Coach. He's not really a bad head coach, he just got stuck with a 49ers franchise that was headed towards salary cap problems plus he had to deal with T.O. and Jeff Garcia. Mike Homlgren, Seahawks Head Coach. Keep him away from a GM job and he's decent. He's got the Seahawks in cap trouble. Also he's great at developing quarterbacks. Just ask Joe Montana, Steve Young, Brett Farve and Matt Hasselbeck. Dan Hawkins, Boise State Broncos Head Coach. He's done an amazing job at Boise State, co-responsible for leading the Broncos to have the greatest NCAA Division I-A Winning Percentage since 2000. Has a built great offenses utilizing the quarterback's he's had. With a strong DC, he could be a good fit for the Jaguars. Tom O'Brien, Boston College Golden Eagles Head Coach. The last time the Jags took a coach from BC, he wasn't half bad. O'Brien's got Coughlin's work ethic as well. I don't think he'll be as much of a hard ass as Coughlin is but he couldn't hurt the Jags program. | | Monday, December 6th, 2004 | 2:30 am [bryansi]

Well if that wasn't the greatest missed kick in the history of the NFL. Scobee nailed that 60 yarder, he just happened to kick the ball about 2 feet too far to the right. The Jags shot themselves in the foot though, I mean they outgained the Steelers, had much less penalties and controlled more of the clock. You gotta win with all those stats in your favor. Still this team has an outside shot of making the playoffs. Even if the Jags don't make the playoffs, they will be ready for next year. Starting at Couch Potato...
Hi All, I just found this journal when I searched on my keywords. I'm an average Jag fan in Orange Park. I attended all the home games during the first five seasons, but I got tired of fighting the crowd, sitting in the heat or cold, being surrounded by drunks and the smell of peanuts and beer. I still watch the games on TV whenever they're on the road or not blacked out. I've never had a favorite player, though I do have a Fred Taylor jersey. I guess that makes him my favorite by default. Undefeated
Just wow. All I can say is just wow! The doubters should be silenced. They won't be, but they should be. It doesn't matter how "ugly" the win was. What matters is the heart of this team and the fact that they don't seem to give up unless that clock says :00. Now the second-place Colts will be visiting ALLTEL Stadium next week as the other MVP gets to meet the new and improved Jaguars defense. | | Sunday, September 19th, 2004 | 11:27 pm [bryansi]

No Reason To Worry
Looking at the stats and the scores of the Jaguars past two victories might give some people reason to worry that you can't always live on the edge and expect to live. I say you can and good teams do. Look at the close games won by the 2000 Ravens, 2001 Pats, 2002 Bucs and 2003 Pats. Yes the Jags will lose, if there's one thing that's inevitable it's the fact that you will lose a game in the NFL. But this team can win the close ones and that's gonna mean a lot in big road games like the one next week in Tennesse and in December at Green Bay. If you've been in close games before and come away the victor, you have the edge. Now next week is going to be very big. The Titans just got beat at home by the Colts, they don't want to lose two in a row at home to division rivals. Unfortunatly for them if their offense can only score 17 points against the Colts D they will have some major problems with the Jags D. And I'm also making a bold prediction that Chris Brown will not break anything more than a 10 yard run for a TD. Still the Jags have allowed only 1 TD and 3 FGs in 2 games. So the Jags who were 0-2 and a bleak future was predicted for them at this time last year are now 2-0, in first place in the AFC South and are living up to the unbelievable hype that's been placed on them by the some of the media and most of their fans. |
