Photo books? [08 Aug 2008|05:52pm]

aibo
Hello everybody,
planned to ask this for quiet a while, as I happened to watch the "Joni Mitchell - Woman of Heart and Mind" DVD on a quiet Saturday night once again, and totally felt for all the great photos presented on that disc. So I was wondering if there ever was a decent piece of a book featuring these photos - a search on Amazon only got me some biographies which seem not really what I am looking for. Two artbooks also, out of print....

Any ideas? Would be really great.

Cheers!

Song to a Seagull [22 Jun 2008|08:50pm]

Okay, this Joni community seems to be a little too quiet for my liking, especially when you consider how much there is to talk about with regards to the woman herself!  So I though a good idea, to get people chatting again, would be to post an album each week and people can tell us what they think of it.  Basically anything you have to say on it or the songs including, any trivia that you have, any comments that Joni made about them, perhaps any live mp3s that you wish to share, what the songs mean to you personally, any stories behind them etc.  I think it would be really interesting to hear from you all!  And naturally, since this is the first week, we'll be starting with Song to a Seagull.

As you all probably know, this album was released early 1968 and was divided into two sides called "I Came to the City" and "Out of the City and Down to the Seaside" respectively.  And here is the track listing

So let us know what you think?!

Hey people,

I just got my hands on a whole series of Joni bootleg concerts which it'd be fun to share:

Live at Club 47 (1968)
Philadelphia Folk Festival (23/8/68)
Second Frets (1966-1968)
James Taylor & Joni Mitchell Live at the Royal Albert Hall (1970)
(Kept by) Her Own Devices: Live in Concert (1972)
Live at Carnegie Hall (23rd Feb 1972)
Live at the BBC (1972)
[Miles of Aisles]
Live in Hawaii (1973)
[Shadows and Light]
Live at Red Rocks (1983-08-30)
Live at Wembley Arena (1984-08-24)
Unplugged & Jamming Vol. 1 (circa Turbulent Indigo)
Unplugged & Jamming Vol. 2
An All-Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell (Live 2000)

Now obviously in amongst that lot there's copious unreleased tracks, and we all want our hands on them. I don't know if people have a lot of these already, but I imagine many don't.

Question: is there an easy way to upload these, album at a time? My ordinary method of using You-Send-It and uploading them track by track sounds like it's gonna be too painstaking.

Any advice on that front would be appreciated. Also which ones would people most like uploaded?
Cheers. x

Favourite Lines... [26 Apr 2008|02:57pm]

sacameron89
Okay, I know that since Joni has written so many amazing lyrics, this is a bit like asking you to choose your favourite child, but I'm going to ask anyway.  What are your favourite Joni lines and WHY?  You can post multiple lyrics if you need to, I know I will! lol  In fact, let's not restrict it to song lyrics, if she has said anything in an interview or something that really touched you then you can also post!  I find it really interesting to hear other peoples favourite lines and why!  Plus, sometimes it sheds a new light on lyrics that you nevr thought were particularly special.

Stuart!  X

Hi,

Does anyone know how to get a reproduction of any of Joni's paintings. I'm  espacially  interested in the painting "40 below 0". It can be a poster or something like...
I just love this paiting and buying the original seems to me like impossible.

Greetings

Just Like This Train [16 Nov 2007|03:43pm]

 Hey there people,

I was wondering if anyone knew how I could go about getting hold of an mp3 or something similar of Joni singing 'Just Like This Train' on the 'Painting with Words and Music' DVD. I am in absolutely love with that slower, acoustic version. I like it so much better than the original. I was so happy the first time I watched that concert and she began playing the intro to that! It's just one of those songs I thought I'd never hear her play live.

Anyone got an idea? Thanks folks!

So, how does everyone like Shine?

Personally, I love it. It's beautifully poetic, and so relevant.

And what's your favourite song from the album? I'm torn between "This Place," and "Night of the Iguana".

'Girl, you make me see pictures in my head.' [20 Mar 2007|06:19pm]

"I'm an uppity female," says Joni Mitchell, sitting in the kitchen of her house in an upmarket neighbourhood of Los Angeles. "In the media, there's no one like me. I'm as good as - and better than - most. But I'm not given my fair shake."

Excellent Joni Mitchell article from The Guardian

An article from tomorrow's NYT on Joni's new album, ballet, documentary, and art installation [03 Feb 2007|12:11pm]

Dance

Working Three Shifts, and Outrage Overtime

By DAVID YAFFE
Los Angeles

JONI MITCHELL, despite her introspective reputation, has always been a dancer. At a disco during the ’80s she encountered a music critic spouting invective. But after watching her dance, he asked for a lesson. “I told him to close his eyes and center his weight on his body with his feet astride,” she recalled. “And I said: ‘Relax your body. Keep your eyes closed. Feel the beat. Express how much you enjoy that beat with your body and forget what you look like.’ ”

Two decades later this legendary singer-songwriter is still giving dance lessons: “The Fiddle and the Drum,” her choreographic collaboration with the Alberta Ballet, opens on Feb. 8 in Calgary. Meanwhile “Flag Dance,” an installation of her antiwar mixed-media art, has finished a two-month run at the Lev Moross Gallery in West Hollywood, and she has recently recorded enough new songs for an album, which she plans to call either “Strange Birds of Appetite” or “If.”

“I’m working three shifts,” Ms. Mitchell, 63, said. “I’m doing the work of four 20-year-olds. Between the art show and the ballet and the new album, I’ve never worked so hard in my life.”

Lost Music (for a Hippie) podcast [20 Nov 2006|05:01pm]

MADE ME WEAK IN THE KNEES
Joni Mitchell reminds me of home. Not any physical location where I live or use to live, but the concept of home- belonging, comfort, warmth. For this week of Thanksgiving, we focus our podcast spotlight on Ms. Mitchell and her wonderful contributions to the world of music. Tori Amos floats down the river, a bunch of burnt out hippies visit Woodstock, and Nazareth provides us with one of the oddest cover songs ever. Seriously, why is Nazareth covering Joni Mitchell?? Such an odd pairing. Frank Zappa and Van Morrison hang with the dead girls of London, Hey Rosetta urges us to plug our ears, and the Animal Collective share a little purple bottle with us.

Favorite Mitchell Album - Probably "Hejira" at this point.
Favorite Mitchell Song - Free Man In Paris
Route into Mitchell familiarity - Had Judy Collins' "Wildflowers" album and decided to look up that songwriter...
Most Obscure Mitchell Song I Like - it used to be "Urge For Going" but that's out now. Maybe "Offnight Backstreet". And "Good Friends" with Thomas Dolby (have that on 12" single!!).

Hey, I've been listening to 'Night Ride Home' recently, and has anyone else noticed that Joni's voice sounds really different than in albums like 'Blue', 'Ladies of the Canyon', and 'For the Roses'? I love a lot/most of the songs nonetheless of course, but it's just interesting... just wondering if anyone else noticed/if anyone knows why her voice might have changed?
talk to you all later!
