I read someone saying that the Brazilian soccer team was kind of similar to the Yankees.

This is a lie.

Everybody (well, lots and lots and lots and lots of people) likes the Brazilian soccer team.

Manchester United is kind of similar to the Yankees.

*hates Yankees*

I'm back in Chengdu for maybe a week.

I saw this posted in Twistedchick's LJ:

Let me mention something that isn't likely to be in the headlines: the way that laws like this are being interpreted now means that if a doctor has a pregnant patient whose fetus dies, he may not legally be able to go in and remove it before the dead tissue causes problems for the woman. Unless they can induce birth, to get it out of her body, she may well be in a life-threatening situation, and her doctor would face felony charges for saving her life. That's how strictly these laws are being interpreted. Women's lives aren't the lives that are considered important. Welcome to third-class status, sisters, behind the rights of men and the rights that men want to award to fetuses. Do not ever think that neoCons won't prosecute doctors for saving women's lives. Why would they, when they consider women's only 'true' role to be to populate the world with more neoCons? If you think I'm exaggerating here, consider the Kansas attorney general who wanted to get his hands on the private records of clinics that helped teen-aged women with birth control "so that he could prosecute child rapists" despite the fact that the clinic had turned over all required information on assaults already, and the cases of the women in Utah who were unable to get doctors to deal with the dead fetuses they were forced to carry. I linked to that article well over a year ago. This is not new. It is dangerous and it is real, and it affects every woman, not just the ones who are pregnant with wanted or unwanted fetuses.

That is evil.

More later maybe.

I can't tell whether that's disgusting or hilarious. It's just completely absurd. A little bit amusing. But...kind of OMGSD what is going on here? Just...yeah. Absurd. Bizarre. Weird.

Lots of interesting discussion today.

That makes me happy.

One newbie made two posts about Yackle and both were new. Which was cool, because Yackle is really interesting. One was about why she was old, and one was about whether Elphaba evaded her "destiny" by not going to the Pclub.

Hmm.

*turns purple* Poof!

I cannot understand how people who clearly read quite a bit can't write grammatically-correct dialogue. It's not that difficult. They're smart people AND THEY LOOK AT IT ALL THE TIME.

Completely bizarre.

Granted, there are people who probably can't spell "comma," so they don't count, but sometimes you'd think they ought to know how.

I haven't been sleeping well at all.

I'll go to bed at a completely reasonable time, not be tired at all, toss and turn for awhile, and wake up exhausted next morning. Then I'll be tired and want to lay down at random intervals all day long.

But Dad's coming home today. He's bringing me good shampoo! That shouldn't really matter, but the Chinese stuff makes my hair feel awful, and Head and Shoulders is really for dandruff control (right?) and Pert Plus makes people call their friends over to feel how soft my hair is (well, only once) so I'm happy. Yay.

Yeah, I'm not happy at all that Dad's coming home, just my shampoo...lol.

I feel a bit silly. Silly as in amusing. And amused. Of course amused. I'm always amused. *grins*

No. Jasper. Come back from the Dark Side.

Back to Portland, specifically.

It's annoying enough not to be getting more Thursday next (sorry, totally not intended), but I knew quite awhile ago that he would be writing The Fourth Bear, the second in the Nursery Crime series, next, instead of going back to TN, and as it should be plenty funny, I don't especially mind. But I just found out that US tour for The Fourth Bear (which doesn't have an especially interesting title) won't go to Portland.

What is the point of having Powell's around, I ask you, if they don't drag my favorite authors to town? Okay, well, they got Fforde on the day after his last book came out and I managed to see him before I left for China...and Maguire did go there after SOAW, but as I was in China at that point it doesn't matter.

And I guess I adore Powell's anyway, but...yes. Pretty much, I need to sleep. I don't actually mind that much. *grins*

ETA: But who can't absolutely adore an author who puts, on the navigation bar at the top of his website, http://www.jasperfforde.com/hamlet.html? Even the advertisements are funny. Granted, they're fake, but...click one if you go there. Trust me.
