Read Because: more spoop reading but, look out! this is very distinctly set in summer; ebook borrowed from Multnomah County Library
Review:
Our protagonist's quietly remarkable daughter was kidnapped and murdered some years ago—unless she wasn't, and in truth remains the victim of a particularly sinister cult. To my surprise, I quite like Campbell's voice—the atypical adjectives go a long way towards building atmosphere. But this badly fumbles the landing. All that atmosphere, the intriguing way the supernatural hovers suggestively over a psychological thriller, amounting to little more than ooga booga evil torture cult + an unearned and overdramatic ending. 1.5 stars for a book that was headed to better places but couldn't find its way.
Samhain Publishing just so desperately needs a new cover artist.)
