i finally got my gun slide back today!!!

when i bought my gun it was all black, like this:

after changing the grip and having the slide coated, it now looks like this:

pretty sweet, huh?

i couldn't help it, so i went to the range today.  i put through 50 rounds of cheap ammo plus 8 rounds of what i usually carry (7x cor-bons and 1x glaser blue).  the cheap stuff was really really dirty...

anyway, the new finish on the slide looks great.  really matches the grip.  i am very happy with it.  and hopefully it should help keep the metal protected if/when i start carrying on a regular basis.

also, i rented a glock 23 at the range and put 50 rounds of .40 S&W ammo through it :)  just wanted to try out a glock.  and it was pretty fun.  but they are so large, i am not sure if i could ever really carry it around.  i mean, really, it'd just be a range gun or a house protection gun.  is that worth it?

i think if i were to buy another gun, it would either be a glock or a rifle (perhaps an AR-15 before the assault weapons ban takes effect cause the dems are back in office)

but really, i don't feel like i need a gun...it's the geek in me that wants more than one thing to shoot when i go to the range.

oh, at the range today there were a bunch (like 7-8) kids there learning how to shoot.  it was so odd.  they were like 18 or so.  one of them kept getting her picture taken (yeah, most of them were girls).  i guess they were celebrating their 18th birthdays by doing things only 18 year olds can do (18 y/o cannot rent a handgun, but i think they had a 21 y/o with them...and the 18 y/os were renting rifles).

anyway, kinda surprised to see the youngins there.

i am just happy to have my little gun back again.  the refinishing took way longer than i was promised :/

either tonight or tomorrow i gotta go to the range. got 13# and 11# recoil springs from gunsprings.com. the factory spring is rated at 9#. last night i installed the 13# spring. the new spring should:

  1. reduce recoil a bit

  2. keep casings from flying too far

  3. reduce wear and tear on the gun

  4. also makes it a bit tougher to move the slide back

so i am very excited to give them a try. and i need to try them at the range before i go to the training thing on saturday. gotta make sure i don't get any FTEs.

really, it's not all about my P32 [Oct. 17th, 2006|10:08 pm]

all of my livejournal posts are turning into range reports nowadays...

today east orange shooting sports called me in to pick up the 2 boxes of cor-bon JHP ammo i ordered last week. so i went in after work to get it. since i am planning on this being my carry ammo, i went on the range and went through a box. i also finished off what was in my current magazine. so, in all:

1x glaser frangible (blue)
6x winchester silver tip JHP
20x (box) corbon JHP

at first, i was off of the target...always to the left, either low or not low. it took about a mag and a half before i was on target. my last few shots were well places near the center of the target. i think what's happening is i am just getting used to the recoil, but each range trip i have to get used to it again. this is not good, as i won't have a mag to blow through if a bad guy were to ever attack...i'd kinda have to be right on right at the beginning...you know?

also, yesterday i took my P32 into the kel-tec headquarters to get a grey grip. i want a nice "city camo" type gun...which are usually grey. the last remaining part of the transformation is to either get a nickel plated or hard chrome slide...as it is now, my grip is grey and the slide is black. still looks cool.

the trip to kel-tec was cool. only took 25 minutes...i bought the grip, then took it to the other building where it was installed. the gun smith even polished my feeding ramp, then took it out on their range and ran three mags through it to make sure everything was OK.

i really like this kel-tec company. i wish their logo was cooler...

on another gun related note, i signed up for the NRA personal protection in the home course being offered down on I-drive this saturday by juan garcia's company, high risk security services...i will review the course afterwards :) it's supposed to teach good home defensive tactics, including, i think, short-range shooting, shooting from the hip, and shooting under pressure. i hope i am ready for it...

ranging again [Oct. 15th, 2006|09:20 pm]

one of the boards I am on, www.floridashootersnetwork.com, recommended a good beginning pistol course sponsored by the NRA in Orlando...so I went today.

it was only $15 and was a great deal. i didn't learn a ton of new things, but the class was very thorough and we even got like an hour of range time in that $15...as well as a small NRA book on pistols...well worth the money!

the class was small, only 5 students...and it went faster than the four hours they say it takes (we were out in 3).

it was given at an outdoor range down in the middle of nowhere. east of narcoossee and the 417, off a long stretch of a beat-up old road called "wewahotchee" or something...next to the orange county sheriff's range, actually.

it was my first trip to an outdoor range, and it was pretty fun. i put an entire box (50 rounds) of Winchester white box (FMJ) through my new gun today. worked like a charm; still no FTEs or FTFs! this brings my total shot count with the gun up to 125 or so...

as a part of the course, we even took the guns apart and cleaned them...it was really thorough. but dealt not at all with the issues of carrying concealed, laws and that. which is just as well, i feel already fairly well versed with those laws here in florida.

so if anyone wants to take the course, let me know. they're held once a month here in orlando. you don't need your own gun. i'd gladly go with you, since i am an alumnus i get to go again for free :) and it satisfies the training requirements for the florida concealed weapons permit...

I took my P32 to the range tonight for the second time and put 52 rounds through it. No problems whatsoever. Worked marvelously. I even threw a variety of ammo at it:

1x glaser frangible round (too expensive to shoot more than 1)
14x winchester silver tip JHP
7x S&B FMJ
30x American Eagle FMJ

Used three magazines: 10 round magazine, 8 round modified magazine, and a 7 round with the flyer wire installed for the hollow points.

The recoil from the pistol messed up my first session, where I only shot 20 or so rounds. I was anticipating the recoil too much and my aim was off. For my first 20 or so rounds tonight the same thing happened, but eventually I got the hang of it and I started having a decently tight spread right in the middle. This tells me I just have to get out to the range more often. Nothing wrong with that

I've also gone ahead and ordered the 11# and 13# recoil springs from Wolf, just in case. My ammo of choice is CorBon JHP and S&B for FMJ...some of the more powerful rounds. From what I hear it'll help with wear and tear and possibly the recoil will feel better.

at the gun range [Oct. 11th, 2006|11:46 am]

yesterday after work i took my new gun to the gun range.

i had been carrying it around loaded (only in my car and at work, where it's legal until the permit comes in). so i unloaded it in the car. one of the big reasons i chose the P32 over the P3AT is that the P32 has a slide stop. this, and a lot of complaints about recoil and disassembling the P3AT, drove me to the P32.

after unloading, i put in an empty magazine and locked the slide open. wanted to make sure the gun was obviously unloaded when walking in the store with it.

i had to fill out a form to use the range. i had decided i was only going to do 21 rounds (3 magazines) or so. picked up a target and went to the range. there was only one other stall occupied in the range when i got there, but by the time i left all of them were occupied.

so i load up the magazine, pull back the slide, and then i am unsure whether or not that chambered a round. i worked the slide action again and it ejected the round that was chambered. oops. okay, well, that means a new round should be chambered, right? so i aim, pull the trigger...and nothing happens.

i think what happened was a round wasn't chambered. after waiting about 30 seconds to make sure it wasn't a delayed fire, i unloaded the gun, re-filled the magazine, and tried again. i aimed at the target, then pulled the trigger. BANG!

i ended up using half of my box of ammo, about 25 rounds. i didn't have one problem, after i got the hang of how the pistol worked. the thing has more recoil than the ruger i used for my CCW class, but not too much. my aim was also like way off. i was down and to the left. according to this chart i found, that means i was either jerking or tightening my fingers. possibly breaking my wrist down or drooping my head. all of that is possible. i also read that the sites on the P32 often aim a bit lower than normal, which probably contributed to my horrible accuracy. with the ruger, i was hitting pretty close to center.

also, i had to keep the target 20 feet out. a lot of people say that is fine, but a lot of others say it should only be 12-15 feet out for a small concealed carry gun like the P32. Stats say most people end up shooting 10 feet away in a self-defense situation.

though i was obviously a bit nervous, i had a good first time out with my gun. i hope to repeat the experience this weekend at some point. i wish i had some friends around here who i could go to the range with. it would be fun. maybe i'll put 50 rounds through it next time :)

so, if anyone is in the area and wants to shoot, let me know!

Welcome to the Kel-Tec community.

I'm not a promoter or anything, but I am curious if there are kel-tec users out there who would appreciate a LiveJournal community. So please feel free to post and tell us about your Kel-Tec firearms.

I currently have a Kel-Tec P32.
