» Just getting started
Just wanted to introduce myself, if anybody is even out there.
I'm new to Kiteboarding and am really psyched to get good soon. I bought a 3m trainer kite about a month ago and have been flying it as much as possible. Lately I've been riding a longboard skate with it and having lots of fun getting powered up and carving around parking lots and whatever.
I've been reluctant to buy a real kite before having formal instruction. Tomorrow I've got a PASA certified instructor to give me a one on one full day lesson up on Lake St Clair. I'm hoping that that will be enough instruction for me to feel comfortable progressing further on my own.
I've got another guy willing to give me a sweet deal on two Airush kites. One is a 12m Flow and the other is a 15m Flow. Anybody have any advice or opinions on gear, getting started etc.

» kiting journal and intro
I joined this community a few months back but I don't think I introduced myself...
My name's Sara, I'm a 25 year old engineer from Upstate NY but currently living at the Jersey Shore. This is my 3rd summer here, and while I gripe about how I hate New Jersey I've been enjoying the watery world I've found myself in. My job is here.
Anyway, I started flying power kites on the beach almost 2 years ago. I was hooked the first night and my friend kindly lent me one of his. It gave me something to do at the beach even when I couldn't find anyone to go with.
Anyway.. I did some snow kiting last wnter in NY and I've been known to wear rollerblades when flying in large grassy fields. That's fun! But it helps that I'm more comfortable on skates than walking.
So kiteboarding... Seeing all the water around here, I just knew it was only a matter of time.
I found a place that gives lessons, and I've had one. They let me start out body dragging after I proved I really could fly a kite. :) unfortunately, they're over an hours drive and I haven't had a lot of free weekends. The two times I planned a 2nd lesson the wind was too off-shore to go.
But I've gotten myself a kite, and I'm planning to go do some body dragging sometime very soon.
I've been frustrated with the online kite groups because nobody ever answers my questions except to say "take lessons." I know lessons are important for safety concerns... Kites that big are dangerous! But after I tell them that I AM taking lessons I wish they'd answer my questions. That's what the internet is for. Exchange of info.
Anyway! That's my (long) intro. If anyones interested I set up a separate kite journal, skairtae.

The beach was great this weekend! The water was the most perfect emerald green and the sand was like sugar. We didn't have too many people on the beach, but we didn't get much wind or surf either. At least everyone was able to get their gear in order in case we get some wind later off the Gulf of Mexico.

1. Wrap your lines asymmetrically on the bar until you are a few feet away from teh bridle. Stop wrapping and hold all your lines and the bar TIGHTLY with your left hand. Shake the bar, and you will notice the lines will remain on the bar nicely.
2. As the kite lies in the water leading-edge down, place your left armpit on the leading edge. Keep your back to the wind and grab the right wingtip with your right hand. Keep your back to the wind and grab the right wingtip with your right hand. Pull the right wingtip under the water's surface until it is under your left elbow.
3. Move your left elbow strut by strut along the leading edge as your right hand follows with the wingtip. Using this process, you will arrive at the opposite wingtip
4. Join the wingtips in the right hand as you position your left hand (and bar) inside the kite. Relax and direct the kite into the beach. It only counts as a self-rescue if the kite is pulling you in! If it is pulling you farther out to the ocean, you're screwed. :-) Just kidding. :-P

» The Weather Is Here...
There was some wind yesterday but not enough for the smaller kites. Phil managed to go airborn once or twice on a 20 meter Cabrinha. No one minded the lack of wind, the beach and the water were beautiful. The Gulf of Mexico was so green and it looked awesome with the white sand. To quote Jimmy Buffett "The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful."

We got in a lot of kiteboarding last weekend and I got some decent photos. They are calling for 10-15mph wind tomorrow so I am keeping my fingers crossed. The weather is perfect and we have had a lot of new riders showing up lately. If there is wind we'll kiteboard-if not we can take the boat and wakeboard. I did manage to get a picture of Mike on a new Litewave.
