Present Simple |
[Jul. 31st, 2014|10:46 am]

д.), as a rule- как правило и другие. Present Simple.
|
Vasya I |
|
usually |
lives have breakfast |
in London. at 9 o’clock. |
Vasya I |
doesn’t don’t |
usually |
live have breakfast |
in the country. until nine. |
|
Where |
Do Does does Don’t |
you Vasya Petya Petya they |
|
usually |
lives have breakfast live live? speaks German speak German speak German |
in London? at nine? in London? well, well, well too? * |
doesn’t he? does he?

Dear community,
I've started reading Jules Verne's Ile mystérieuse (all time favourite) in French (at long last)... and the first problem I encountered is how to pronounce the characters' names.
Thing is, he writes about 5 Americans, In French, spelling their names in some weird half French- half English way.
Help? Were do I at least put the stress in these?
Pencroff, Cyrus Smith, Gédéon Spilett (there!), Harbert Brown. Well, and Nab of course, but I won't be needing his full name any time soon.
Thank you! |

Is it ok to write this here? If not... tell me off.
Basically, I want to offer my services translating German into English. I'm looking for experience, because I want to see if I'm good enough to do it professionally. It would mean a hell of a lot to me if anybody contacted me with a project (I may charge a little, depending on how big it is!). It needn't be translation work... if you've already translated something yourself and you'd simply like it checked over, I can help you with that, too. I'm a native English speaker but have had a bilingual upbringing with German. I've some experience teaching German & English privately, and I have a 1st class honours degree in Literature & Creative Writing.
Thanks. :)
Better write a little summary in German, too...! Ich will fuer euch deutsche Dokumente, Texte, usw. ins englisch uebersetzen. Danke. :) |

I've been looking for podcasts in languages I've studied (Spanish, French, German), and I'm wondering if you have any recommendations.
At least in US iTunes, a lot of the podcasts I can find related to foreign languages are about learning those languages. I'm not fully fluent in all of these languages, but I'm looking for podcasts/programs for native speakers by native speakers. It seems like there is a gap between instructional materials and "real world" language usage, and I want to get more familiar with the speed and language sounds that native speakers tend to use. I'm looking for podcasts as opposed to Internet radio programs because podcasts will allow me to pause/rewind/replay and listen on my own time, and I'm thinking it will help if I can hear the same program every week.
Ideally, what I'm looking for would be updated once per week, or maybe a few times per week. As far as subject matter goes, I'm not too particular, but it may help to be more mainstream - news/current affairs, business, entertainment. Free is good, too. If there are any you can recommend from English-speaking countries other than the US, that would be good, too. Thanks! |

Bürger: Und was hat dich daran gereizt?

Hello there :-)
My real name is Iulia, though everybody 'round the internet calls me Jules. You can, too.
I have a MA in Conference Interpreting and a BA in Applied Modern Languages. I've been working as a freelance translator since 2008, and occasionally I take up teaching, training or tutoring. My English and French are at a C2 level (highest proficiency), and I consider myself fluent in both. My German is somewhere near an Advanced level in writing, whereas it suffers greatly in speaking, from lack of practise. I also understand Italian and Spanish; at gunpoint I'll attempt to express myself in these two, as well.
I'm interested in finding people, native speakers of German or bilingual with German as one of their languages, who would be willing to be my pen-pals (either via snail mail or by email), or who would like to add me on Skype/YM for occasional chats aimed at improving my oral communication.
I'm also beginning to learn Japanese and Dutch, so if you have any recs in this respect throw them in my direction.
Also, for anyone who is patient enough to deal with a beginner in Norwegian, I'd highly appreciate the same initiatives as those mentioned for German above.
I can offer tutoring/help with Romanian (my mother tongue), English or French. |

"do you know what irony is? yes, it's like bronzy and goldy...(c)" Английский - это игра слов и бесконечный юмор, французский - это богатейшие оттенки грамматики и музыкальная логика, а история - помилуйте, это просто детектив.

| Teaching German for the first time...! |

Hey everyone! I need a little input.
On Tuesday I'm teaching a German class for adults with learning difficulties. I've been to the class once before, it's a very small group (4-5 students) and it's beginners German. It goes on for about 30 to 45 minutes.
I've taught single students before but never a group and I'm a little nervous. I've settled on teaching the colours in German to them, and have a few ideas, but nothing to fill up the time!
I was wondering if anyone had any exercises or games for this topic. The usual teacher likes to keep things very simple on account of the class' learning difficulties, but I do not want to patronise them, either. So something simple, but stimulating and fun would be best.
Any games/exercises/tips/hints/teaching methods would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks. :)

Hi all, I'm going to Morocco in a few weeks and from what I've seen Arabic and French are both major languages in the country. I'm flying into/out of Casablanca, but am interested in taking a train to/from Marrakech. I have two questions about that:
1) Does anyone know if it's easy to get a seat just by showing up at the train station the day of travel, or is an advanced purchase necessary?
2) I can speak fairly decent French, but I'm wondering if the people selling tickets will speak English, French and/or Arabic. If they're more likely to speak Arabic, I was wondering if anyone knows how to say: "I would like to buy a second class ticket to (city: Marrakech/Casablanca).
Thanks in advance. |

Hey everyone! :)
I have a short (and probably daft) question about the use of the Swedish words for "in". Is there a rule when to use "på" and when to use "i"? For example, one says:
I don't really see a clear rule and at the moment it's simply guessing which of the two words to use... I hope that someone can explain it to me, or is there no rule at all and I have to learn it all by heart??
Thank you very much in advance for your help! :)

| So, where do you sit in a theatre? |

Dear community, I have just been to a theatre in the US, and my friend is going to one in Great Britain. Yet the... appellations of the parts of the... hall leave me thoroughly confused. Naturally, there are different buildings and different stages and the lesser ones could only be divided in so many parts. But what to call them? In BAM Harvey Theatre (New York), all that is downstairs is 'opera' and all that is upstairs, 'gallery'. Yet Sherlock Holmes listened to music sitting 'in the middle of the stalls'. Of... wherever he went to, in London. And then there is also the balcony. Help? Also, what do you call an individual, well, showing of a play? A night? A performance? And the place where the (spectators? the public?) sit is... the hall? ( Here's a huge Russian theatre and parts thereofCollapse ) |

| Need a German-English translator? |

Does anybody need a translator? Specifically, does anyone need a German text translated into English, or vice versa? I'm a British woman, have been brought up bilingual with a German mother. I'm in the process of figuring out if languages are my 'true calling'. So if anyone here has ANYTHING they want translating, PLEASE leave me a comment and I will do it for you! This is absolutely FREE. I'm just trying to test myself and get some experience. Thank you. :)
Danke. :)

Dear community,
could you please tell me if one can distinguish between verbs that demand the particle 'to' between themselves and a following other verb, like
I dare you to do this.
and those that do not, like
I bid you do this.
To add confusion, here is another one nearly identical to the previous:
I forbid you to do this.
So, how do you know which is where?
Thank you! |

| Arabic Translation |

Hello all!
I was wondering if someone could translate a phrase for me into Arabic. I'm can read and pronounce Arabic script, but my sentence formation is still a little weak. The phrase is "If you are my habibi, I will be your habibti." If someone could translate this into Arabic using Arabic script and the English alphabet, I will be forever thankful.
Thanks in advance! |
