Detail of Ñ, by Leandro Katz (Argentine, b. 1938). Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles (91-B26501)]
This section presents the GRI’s extensive collection of artists' books by Latin American and Latinx artists. Organized alphabetically by artist’s name, these publications range from the 1950s to the present. A surge of interest in the form in the 1970s and 1980s is notable in the GRI’s collection, which contains important publications by artists such as Ulises Carrion, Guillermo Deisler, Eugenio Dittborn, Felipe Ehrenberg, Anna Bella Geiger, Hudiilson Jr, Leandro Katz, Dámaso Ogaz, Yani Pecanins, Julio Plaza, and Cecilia Vicuña. The collection also holds a significant number of books by Ignacio “Nacho” Gómez Arriola, one of the founders of the Taller Gráfica de Comala, an artisan printing workshop in Comala, Mexico. Contemporary artists continue to engage with the form of the book and the Getty holds many works from the 1990s to the present, such as those by María Isabel Arango, Carolina Caycedo, Beatriz Cortez and rafa esparza, Guillermo Gomez-Peña, and Raimond Chaves and Gilda Mantilla.
