Supported internship programmes: education that opens doors for everyone

At The City of Liverpool College, we believe every young person deserves a real route into work, whatever their starting point. Our supported internship programmes turn that belief into a year of practical learning, workplace experience and genuine opportunity.

Learning that leads somewhere real

A supported internship gives young people aged 16 to 24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan a full year to build the skills employers are looking for. Learners spend most of their week in a real workplace, trying out tasks, meeting colleagues and seeing their confidence grow month by month. Classroom sessions sit alongside this hands-on experience, so what’s learned in college gets tested and strengthened on the job.

Placements have included organisations such as Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and HMRC, giving interns a genuine taste of working life in settings that matter.

Support that makes the difference

We know that opportunity only works when it comes with the right support around it. Every intern is backed by a full-time tutor from The City of Liverpool College, a dedicated job coach arranged by the Local Authority, and a mentor in the workplace itself. That means help is always close by, whether it’s practising an interview, working through a new task, or simply having someone to check in with.

We keep each cohort small, with only eight to ten places available each year, so every intern gets support that’s personal and consistent from day one to the final week.

Education that includes everyone

This programme exists because we don’t think additional needs should ever stand in the way of a good career. By combining structured learning with real work and one-to-one support, we’re removing the barriers that too often keep young people out of employment. It’s education shaped around the person, not the other way round.

For many interns, this year is the first time they’ve stepped into a workplace and been treated as a genuine part of the team. That experience builds more than a CV. It builds belief in what comes next.

Where it leads

Our aim for every intern is a move into paid work, an apprenticeship or further training once the programme ends, with support continuing beyond the final day. We stay involved because a good ending should lead to a good beginning.
