There was something breathtaking about watching her sleep before the nightmares crept in.

When awake she wore a mask that hid her from prying eyes. Made her impermeable to the environment and those around her. Dix would get video feed of White slaughtering another transgenic and her only reaction would be a clenched fist while her velvet dark eyes narrowed. She was a warrior, a walking weapon; but when slumber took her under, the mask fell. A beautiful woman was left, stripped from labels and the cage Manticore tried to lock her in. In this moment she was his. “Maxie.”

He was a broken soldier; all of them were to some extent. Even while they were locked in Manticore looking glorious while they trained they were pieces of toys taped together; monsters underneath strong jaws and flawless skin.

Small children huddled in the recess of their minds while their laced DNA cocktail assisted them in killing their assignments with brutal efficiency. While they ran escape and evade drills at all hours of the day. All could hear a small timid whisper reminding them how shattered and incomplete they were. A whisper that even pys-ops couldn’t relinquish from their hybrid mind.
