Happiness is a warm gun
Well, I don't know about happiness, but OMG. I fired a gun for the first time ever today, and I loved it. Actually I shot ten rounds from a Glock 19-C, and liked it well enough to ask for ten more rounds with a Glock 17, both of those 9mm.
Eat your hearts out, roleplayers. I had one in my hand, and not just on paper. And I shot live rounds. And actually I'm a pretty good shot, for an absolute beginner. I wish I knew how far away the target was so it would make sense when I told you I hit it 5/10 the first gun, and 8/10 the second. I want to say 40 or 50 meters away but honestly I'd be guessing. I'll have to go back, oh darn oh phooey, and ask them.
But it's a thrill. The kick wasn't nearly as hard as I expected. I was going to start with a .22 because I was afraid of that, but one of our companions told me the Glock 19-C was a "recoil compensated" piece, so I went with it. The kick was nothing, truly. The sound--with safety earphones--was a firecracker pop. But the flash took me by surprise, and the smell of it, and the shells flying and tapping me on the shoulder, the arm, the neck...the experience was thrilling and sensual. I can see how someone could love the thrill. You just have to remember to stick with paper targets, or at least non-living onese.
The shooting club is a little expensive (those 20 rounds put me back 40k won) but I'm fairly sure I'll do it again.
Now to go brag on my myspace. If the DMZ isn't real enough for ya lurkers...!
