P R I V A C Y P O L I C Y

I like music. I like writing about the music I like. I'm not trying to be a tastemaker or be pretentious and show-offy. I just like talking about music and I need an outlet to express my excitement sometimes. You'll find playlists, downloads, my attempts at journalism, sometimes pix of bands. The normal stuff you'll find from an amateur music blog.

Everything herein is just my opinion. If you hate my taste in music, then kindly ignore me, for I am not here to get into a battle of what sucks and what doesn't. If you really feel you need to prove me wrong, then leave a comment, but don't expect argument.

thanks,
Asha

This standing ovation, it's for you

I will always love Good Charlotte. I say that as if I'm making an apology, but I'm not. I don't care what other people think about GC. I move on for awhile, but your favorite bands always come back into the rotation. Good Charlotte is one of those mainstays that will always end up somewhere in my top ten (and I'll always hold a candle for Benji Madden, even with all his groce muscles).

Cardiology has been over 2 years in a making and I've patiently awaited it's arrival. True, I wasn't crazy excited as I've been for past releases, or even as excited as I was for Bittersweet World by Ashlee Simpson for crying out loud, but new music from one of my favorite bands is still pretty stoked-worthy. So when leaked posted the link I stayed up a little late to download it. Don't give me that disgusted look. Listen, my tiny little netbook doesn't even have a disc drive, so when I buy the physical CD on Tuesday (Oh yes, I will buy it!) I wouldn't even be able to put it on my computer or iPod, thusly I wouldn't be able to hear it at all. Sure I could've downloaded it on Tuesday, but Leaked's link sometimes notoriously go dead and it's too much work to search and you know what I wouldn't be able to write this post, so take your high and mighty ass elsewhere, 'kay?

Two years was well worth the wait. This is probably the Best (capital B) record Good Charlotte has ever written or performed. It's becoming more evident the more I listen to it. Those Madden kids, they harmonize like nothing else, it borders on Nsync, but I liked NSync. The melodies are tighter, the harmonies perfect, the lyrics...well, they're Good Charlotte, they're not always particularly deep, but they always hit you in the right places.

I think what really draws me to this record is the mix of the old school GC sound (especially Let the Music Play, the opening of which is so reminiscent of Screamer it nearly brings a tear to my eye), the new direction they went with Good Morning, Revival (Like It's Her Birthday, Last Night), and even the grandiose feeling of Chronicles of Life and Death (Alive, Right Where I Belong). Cardiology encompasses all that Good Charlotte has been and what they aspire to be. If this record is given the chance this could be a real renaissance of the good old days of All Things Rock and the first Honda Civic Tour, maybe the old closeted fans will come out of the woodwork to support Kid Vicious and crew? Maybe? It could happen.

As I write this it's hard to narrow down a favorite song (I've changed the lyrics in the title 4 times!) and isn't that the mark of a good record? Last Night is the easy one to pick out, the sentiment is kind of what I wish Katy Perry's recent "T.G.I.F (Last Friday Night)" was, a loud rock song! What's the point of going out and getting crazy without LOUD music, honestly. Then again the cuteness and familiarity of 1979 is classic Good Charlotte. Then there's the Fray meets All Time Low There She Goes, which somehow reminds of something from the mid-90s, maybe it's the allusion to the La's classic song of the same name? Something about that song makes me internally blush thinking about a boy thinking things about me.

This is really what Good Charlotte comes down to, being real guys in the sea of celebrity. They've gone to some serious highs of celebrity-dom (did you honestly ever think you'd see the likes of Benji and Joel Madden in tabloids?) and still they write songs with their hearts and they still care about their fans immensely. It would be easy to pick on them and complain that they are phony, but you wouldn't be paying attention. These guys are genuine. The way I can tell is when I listen to new music from them and I don't feel disconnected. I still know what they're talking about, I still feel it.

I loved Chronicles, don't get me wrong, but it was one time they seemed to fit an aesthetic, instead of being themselves. The follow-up, I think alienated some people because of the mainstream-radio-friendlieness, but Good Morning, Revival was a step in right direction for the band. And Cardiology follows that vein and at the same time goes back to the future in a sense. It sounds like five 30 year old guys but it still sounds like five punks from a small town. By being themselves, they've shed the feeling that they're trying to please someone. Nothing is sexier than being comfortable with yourself, being happy, and that's what comes across in Cardiology.

Joel and Benji Madden in the past year have really tried to spread the positivity that has infected them. I believe for the first times in their lives, they're happy. Simply put. Joel is raising his family and Benji is working on being happy being that cute little Benji he is. Their bandmates too have been beginning their families and leading successful lives, and it comes off in the songs. Most great records come out of tragedy, heartbreak, or reinvention, but Good Charlotte might have something going with this posi outbreak.

Favorite Track: Last Night, There She Goes.

Least Favorite: Harlow's Song (Sorry Harlow, we still tight?)

Laughable: In 1979, Joel sings that on weekends Roger would take the kids fishing "in nineteen-seventy-nine". Really? He took his 2 year-old and infant twins fishing? That must've been some trip. (I'm just being snarky, but this actually made me laugh)

(Ps. I already told you where to find the record. I won't upload anything else, if you want it, buy it online or go get it, preferably at a small record store-2 birds, 1 stone, ya know)

Covers.

I like cover songs. One Christmas my sisters and I made each other mix CDs, we even made cover art. It was pretty awesome and hilarious. I used mine to show off some cool cover songs and their originals. I still love a good cover song. It's also cool when you've been listening to a song you didn't know was a cover.

Like this one:

A love-struck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made.
Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade
Says something like, "You and me babe, how about it?"

Juliet says, "Hey, it's Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack!"
He's underneath the window, she's singing, "Hey la, my boyfriend's back.
You shouldn't come around here singing up to people like that...
Anyway, what you gonna do about it?"

Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet when you exploded into my heart
And I forget I forget the movie song.
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

Come up on different streets, they're both the streets of shame.
Both dirty, both mean, yes, in the dream it was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real.
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?

When you can fall for chains of silver,
You can fall for chains of gold,
You can fall for pretty strangers
And the promises they hold.
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah!
Now you just say, "Oh Romeo? Yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him".

Juliet, when we made love, you used to cry.
You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die".
There's a place for us, you know the movie song.
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

I can't do the talk, like the talk on TV
And I can't do a love song, like the way it's meant to be.
I can't do everything, but I'll do anything for you.
I can't do anything, 'cept be in love with you!
And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be.
All I do is keep the beat... and bad company.
Now all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme,
Juliet, I'd do the stars with you any time!

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry.
You said, "I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die".
There's a place for us, you know the movie song.
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

And a love-struck Romeo sings a street-suss serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade
He says something like, "You and me babe, how about it?"

You and me babe, how about it?

Do you know Gold Motel yet?

This is what your summer is missing in it's life.
The quintet are based out of Chicago, made of members of The Hush Sound and This is Me Smiling, but the music is pure California. Most of the tracks on 'Summer House' we're written by Greta Morgan while she spent a year in LA, except for the stellar 'Safe in LA' written by guitarist, Eric Hehr about missing his friends in LA, while he was still in Chicago.
I instantly fell in love with the band when I heard Perfect in my Mind, which is in fact perfect in mine. Forget about who or what they sound like and go pick up their album on amazon or itunes, and/or see them on tour!

And we're dancin', we're dancin' around

I'm in love with this:
Club Called Heaven by blackcards

Whatever it is, who ever she is. Pete Wentz' newest project.
I'm a little confused why everyone is riled up and was clueless as to what Black Cards was before a snippet of song and a black webpage. I'm not saying I knew anything, but he mentioned Black Cards for a little while now, here and there and it sounded like new music. Not new Fall Out Boy music, new Pete music. And I like it and I'm excited, just confused. Haha. I see no "SHENANIGANS", it's pretty straight forward. I also have to laugh at the phrase "I don't think it's FOB stuff, because Pete blantantly said so" Oh, Peter Wentz blantantly said something wasn't true? Then we should believe him...HAHA. He's the king of lies and withheld information. But no, this isn't FOB.

Check it out. I've been listening to it on repeat.

PS. Is it Ashlee? My guess, no, but sounds an awful lot like her.

We'll still have the summer, after all

Summer is finally upon us. What is it about this season that implies freedom? It just makes me wanna get out and live. I don't live without some music so naturally I put together a playlist of what I'll be listening to all season long.

1. Perfect in my Mind, Gold Motel
Greta Morgan (Salpeter) has really grown up a lot since co-fronting the Hush Sound. Now she's competing with Jenny Lewis and She&Him-esque sounds. Summer House is a perfect summer record.
2. California Gurls, Katy Perry ft. Snoop Dogg
3. Opposite of Adults, Chiddy Bang

I'm also listening to Under the Sheets on repeat. I love Chiddy and Xaphoon Jones.
4. Fair Game, the Like
5. One Week of Danger (demo version), the Virgins
6. We'll Be Alright, Travie McCoy

Saw him on the Too Fast for Love tour a few weeks back. He killed it! Not sure what I was expecting, honestly. I'd heard Billionaire and seen him with Gym Class Heroes, but solo and live was pretty awesome. Proud of him for doing his own thing.
7. 17, Sky Ferreira
If you haven't heard her already, you're going to LOVE her.
8. Blister in the Sun, Violent Femmes
9. Take Me to a Higher Plane, Kate Nash
10. I'm in Miami Bitch!, LMFAO

My sisters and I are obsessed with Kourtney and Khloe take Miami. Last week we had a "party" to celebrate the premiere. Mostly we got wasted and downloaded this song and 'Shots'. We also may have dedicated a shot to Scott Disick...
11. Money (That's What I Want), the Beatles
Summer isn't complete without the Beatles. Summer for me is about making the cheese.
12. Hard to Explain, the Strokes
The fall is supposed to produce a new Strokes record. STOKED!

Enjoy your summer

Sunday morning blues, always about You.

It's not been a kind Sunday to me. Even though the weather is simply gorgeous, even though I have no responsibilities today, even though I have free reign of the television; I still feel empty. So here is my playlist for today. Some of the songs are obviously about Sunday or by a "Sunday" band. Other songs are just what I'm listening to right now. Be thankful I didn't make a full playlist of Ryan Adams.

If you can't find the songs on your own, go ahead and ask me and I might upload it for you. Otherwise commiserate with me or enjoy these songs alone. As for me I'm trying to make my tuna sandwich and potato salad cheer me up; not working yet.

Perhaps I'll just listen to these songs again.

EDIT: Doesn't appear my shortcut to not typing out the songs is working. Here is the listing as well as a Patrick Stump link

Sunday Morning Blues
1. Lonely Day, Phantom Planet
2. Sunday Bloody Sunday (cover), Paramore
3. Stand Back (cover), Sky Ferreira
4. Sunday Morning, No Doubt
5. Lazy Sunday, Christ Parnell & Andy Samberg
6. Cute without the E (Cut from the Team), Taking Back Sunday
7. Everyday is like Sunday, Morrissey
8. Sunday Morning, Maroon5
9. Confession live @SXSW, Patrick Stump right-click me
10. One Day Robots Will Cry, Cobra Starship
11. Wild Horses (cover), The Sundays

Travie McCoy

Boring short promotional post. Just want people to check out Travie McCoy all solo and shit. Not terribly different from Gym Class Heroes but I love what this man does. It doesn't hurt that he's sexy as hell. Yum.

Check out the new songs, Billionaire and One at a Time on myspace http://www.myspace.com/traviemccoy
And go see him on tour with Cobra Starship and *gag* 3oh!3 this spring/summer. I'll be there in San Diego.

God don't make lonely girls.

Jakob Dylan was my first big rockstar crush. He was the epitome of dreamy when I was 13/14. I accidentally stole a copy of Rolling Stone with him on the cover back then, it was like my intiation into the world of loving boys I will never and can never have. At the time I was obsessed with Fleetwood Mac and the Beatles. The Wallflowers were the first modern band I ever loved. They were my first concert back in 1998. I was 14 and it was my little sister's 13th birthday. We even snuck into soundcheck, because even back then I could never just listen to the music, I was obsessed with the ones making it.
When I was 14 I probably didn't understand that I wanted to be close because I really wanted to know the inner workings of their mind, back then I just wanted to make out with his poster. Growing up and still loving music, songs, lyrics, and yes, musicians, I know that I'm not so much attracted to the smiles and blue eyes as I am to the sounds, to the clever lyrics, to the poetry and applying it to my life. I wanna know what makes them make music. How do they tame the creative beast?
I'll never forget Jakob and his blue eyes glittering back at me on that cover of Rolling Stone. I'll remember reading and rereading the article and daydreaming about marrying Mr.Dylan; even though he's 15 years my senior, he's already married and has a bunch of kids, I still wanna marry him. Or at least have a conversation with him about the evolution of his music. What inspires him?

I'm just feeling excited about the band I loved when I was 14. I've feeling very in love with the music I haven't listened to in a long time. Music is like a time machine taking you back to a place you thought you'd never see again. Listening to Bringing Down the Horse again today feels like I'm in my living room waiting and waiting for the video to play on MTV or VH1 (they used to music networks). I'm wearing those gross brown leather man's shoes I wore all the time and I'm embedding this music in my brain. To tell the truth it sounds better than I remember it being.

Download 'I Wish I felt Nothing' this is my favorite Wallflowers song right now.
File is m4a, which will work with itunes

Asha
