Zombie Movies 2 [21 Jul 2011|11:49am]

naughtyhazard
Think this community needs a little kick so opinions please! I know you like zombie movies so what are your top 5 or 10?

Countdown of what I think are the best Zombie movies of the last 10 years:

10. Black Sheep (a silly Aussie movie)

9. [Rec] 2

8. Diary of the Dead

7. Outpost (Nazi zombie like Dead Snow, which I haven't seen yet)

6. Zombieland

5. 28 Weeks Later

4. Dawn of the Dead

3. [Rec] (or remake Quarantine)

2. Shaun of the Dead

1. 28 Days Later (amazing! Very well made and genuinely scary)

So, what do you think?

I am having a hard time finding a lot of movies that are discussed here in my local video store. There alway is the opt. for amazon.com but I am forbidden from creditcards.

What are your favorite "mad world movies" that are a bit more mainstream but still under the radar?

Straight Dope on anonymous directors [16 Feb 2007|08:40am]

gndrfk
http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/msmithee.htm

What's the origin of the movie director's pseudonym Alan Smithee?

13-Feb-2007

Dear Straight Dope:

I've read that directors who don't want credit for working on a film will list "Alan Smithee" in the credits, presumably to avoid having their name attached to some awful flick. Where did this come from? Was/is there a real Alan Smithee? -Dave Lemasa

Guest contributor Jim Beaver replies:

Alan Smithee (along with several variant spellings) was an official pseudonym of the Directors Guild of America, for use by members who believed (and succeeded in persuading the Guild) that their work on a particular film had been so damaged or altered by others that it no longer resembled the director's vision. Permission to use the pseudonym was not granted casually, and was not intended simply to disown poor work. The practice began in 1968 when Robert Totten and his replacement Don Siegel both believed their work on the film Death of a Gunfighter had been so distorted by those controlling the film that neither wanted credit for the result. The Directors Guild agreed and decided to create a standard pseudonym. Naturally, such a pseudonym needed to be unique so that it would never be confused with the name of an actual director. The name Smithee was chosen, the thinking being that no one actually named Smithee was likely to surface. In 1999, a film called An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn was released, telling the fictional story of a director who wanted to remove his name from the credits of his film, but couldn't because his name actually was Alan Smithee. (Coincidentally, director Arthur Hiller removed his name from the credits of Alan Smithee and thus it actually is Alan Smithee film.) The Directors Guild determined that the name had gotten too familiar to the public as a result of this movie, and ceased using it as an official pseudonym. Now pseudonyms are determined on a case-by-case basis, and different names applied to the films in question.

Saw the best movie I've seen in a while yesterday
Akeelah and the Bee is an awesome movie!
I laughed and I cried!
I highly recommend it to everyone
Stars Laurence Fisburn and Annette Benning, it's a great story about finding out who you are and what you're good at
A great movie for the whole family! (as cheesy as that sounds it's true!)

Also, I watched Friends with Money
Which I just thought was alright
I don't think I like Jenifer Anniston as a movie actress as hard as she is trying
I liked how it came together in the end though

I have two movie reviews for you guys

the first up is...
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I really don't know what to say about this movie, it's kind of a modern day take on the a film noir, I didn't understand half of the things they were saying (slang), but it kept me on my toes and Joseph Gordon-Levitt was excellent (I like this film way better than Mysterious Skin!) I would recommend it if you are in to different movies or mysteries

Second...
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I was really surprised by this movie. I went into it not expecting much which turned out to be a good thing. I thought it was good... I thought the hostage part of it was a bit long....Denzel is playing typical Denzel... Jodie Foster was great and hot! Clive Owen was great, but you don't get to see him much :-P I would recommend it but be aware that it is not your typical Bank robber/hostage-shoot-em-up movie

I don't know if this is an appropriate place to ask this question but I was wondering if anyone knows of a good (free!) program for burning DVDs
I've been using DVD shrink and I've encountered a few I could not burn including, Shop Girl, Memoirs of a Geisha, Beowulf and Grendel, among others...
any suggestions would be great, thanks a lot

Recent movies:

O Sama
A Slipping Down Life
Undertow
Broken Hearts Club

I liked them all, but:

O Sama -- not much of a story, just a bashing of how fundamentalist Islam treats women. Sometimes powerful but it has no real ending. I suspect because this treatment of women/the Taliban continues. Also, the old guy who is supposed to be creepy and harsh doesn't come across as such in anything but the women's monologues; maybe the film should have been longer to show more of his creepy and harsh actions--to me he seemed harmless and goofy. However, after it was over and the credits rolled I got to thinking how brave it is for all those credited people to have made this film and recommend it for that alone.

ASDL -- very good; I liked this one a lot. Kooky and off-beat, tho the ending. . . It was based on a book so now I'll have to read the book and see if the ending/events were different.

Undertow -- wonderful, haunting. Not sure if it was supposed to be more thrilling than it was, but instead of edge-of-seat action it had heartbreaking action.

BHC -- good, but I've seen better.

All films very memorable and have some good acting. None are fantastic or excellent but all are worth seeing.

Dogville ROCKS [01 Dec 2005|12:16pm]

gndrfk
Anyone seen Dogville? Amazing film. I picked up the box in the video store and since it was dollar day I checked it out on the premise I'd be more willing to trash a buck on a dog of a movie than $3 any other night. But what a freaking deal. One buck for a three hour movie that had me enthralled. Gripping. Simply amazing. A film you know very early on you will have to watch again.

I've never heard of it before. Maybe it was released in the art theaters? But there were lots and lots of faces I recognized. Nicole Kidman in the lead was easy to place, but the other names aren't as identifiable to me.

Everything was wonderful: from the tiny jump cuts to the set to the directing to the acting to even the images and music under the credits. A fantastic film, highly recommended. Well worth three hours.

I was wondering if any has seen Crime and Punishment in Suburbia
I really don't know how to describe it
just wondering what other ppl thought of it
I think I ended up liking it at the end and the soundtrack was good

and also I saw my frist Gus van Sant film the other night
Last Days which was inspired by Kurt Cobain's last days
I must say it was quite boring and pointless
barely any dialogue
but I like the last scene
Any thoughts or comments?

And if you're in to documentaries Rize and Mad Hot Ballroom are well worth seeing

So, I looked back a ways to make sure it wasn't a movie that's been beaten to deaht in here, probably not far enough, but Akira.

That is one bitchin flik, I'm actually not one hundred percent sure if it qualifies under traditional cinema because its animated... but anyhow, trippy film, pretty much unstylized anime, but still graphic and gorey, but the plot is pretty groovy, if dated. Pretense being psot WW3 Tokyo is nuked and now there are government regulated and controlled children who have telekenetic powers and so forth capible of making'unmakign teh universe, its a decent mix of an interesting setting, plot, action, and exmaples of the apocalypse and cultists, interesting if nothing else.

Waking Life, I so can't remember if this has been mentioned, but by adn far the best movie I've ever seen, also animated, but not anime, in fact its more like moving art, the style changes form scene to scene too. It can be expressed as a series of ideas, the premise is a guy who can't wake up out of a dream he's in, he may be dead, he may never have been alive. This movie may change the way you think forever, a Sundance film so don't turn your nose up at it because its animated, right, please check it out.
