The return of Big Poppa Pump
According to Meltzer, WWE's finally gone ahead and signed Scott Steiner. I'm not sure this is such a great idea. He's a talented performer with a great look, but he's also 40 and coming off of serious health problems. Not to mention, he's out of his fucking gourd. This could end up turning into another expensive lesson for Vince, a la Hall and Nash. I'm not sure of the timeline, but I wonder if this contributed to them letting Ron Waterman go. Obviously, they don't need a guy who looks like BPP if they have the genuine article. Current Mood: hungry | | Friday, August 16th, 2002 | 9:35 pm [ubu]

I had no idea that was where he got the name... NICHOLAS CAGE TO SELL COMIC COLLECTION He once dreamed of playing the Man of Steel, now Nicholas Cage will be selling his comic collection, including a copy of "Action Comics" #1, the first appearance of Superman. At Dallas ComiCon, which runs the weekend of October 11-13, Cage's collection will be put up for auction, Heritage Comics, one of two brokerage houses auctioning off the collection, announced on Tuesday.
Cage, who at one time was director Tim Burton's pick to play Superman in a never-realized film adaptation, is famously a comic book fan: Instead of relying on his given last name of Coppola, Cage chose a new last name based on his favorite superhero, Marvel Comics' Luke Cage, Power Man. | | Friday, June 7th, 2002 | 6:55 am [rosaferreum]

Dizzy Goodness
I'm not quite sure how I found my way here, but I did. And since the current topic is one of my favorites I guess I'll just say a quick hello and dive right in with my picks. Transmetropolitan: In my opinion this is easily the best book on the market today. I've loved it from the beginning and it just keeps getting better. Only 2 issues left. I'll be sad to see it go. The Filth: The Invisibles got me back into comics after a year or two off. It also made me realize that quality writing is more important to me than pretty pictures. I'm just as confused by The Filth right now as I was by The Invisibles at the same point. I'm also just as excited to see where Grant takes us. Fables: I can't say enough good about this book. I originally picked it up thinking it could be a fairly Gaiman-esque project. It didn't really live up to that but it's damn good on its own merits. The art is very decent, the story is great, and the concept is just fantastic. If you haven't picked this one up yet you should definitely check it out. I think that's pretty much it for Vertigo books I'm reading right now. Quesada has done a great job dragging me kicking and screaming back to Marvel (although Azzarello's Cage may as well be a Vertigo book). So yeah. Those are my Vertigo picks. Vertigo
A few things are coming out this year that I'm really looking forward to. Grant Morrison has a thirteen issue series called "The Filth." Admittedly I don't know too much about the series, but it's going to be Morrison unfettered by editors saying "you can't have our characters do that!" and I think that it's his first creator owned work since the Invisibles...so I don't see how this can be anything but entertaining. At some point, to be fair I'm not sure if it's this year or next year, but at some point in the not to distant future, Brian Wood has a six issue mini-series of his coming out from Vertigo. "Fight for Tomorrow" with art by Denys Cowan. It's an "action/love story, dealing with troubled kids grown up and dealing with a past that insists on continuing to persecute them,” Wood said. “Two kids, Ced and Christy, were orphaned young and sold into what pretty much amounts to slavery and ritual torture, training kids to fight other kids for the entertainment of clan bosses in rural villages in Asia. After they are old enough to escape and relocate to New York's Chinatown, they realize that the miserable existence they just left also exists there, and it creates a whole series of new problems to deal with." And finally there's the upcoming mini-series "Midnight, Mass" written by ex-Xombi scribe John Rozum! It's a series about a rich married couple who are utterly in love with each other, and paranormal investigators. Unlike the rather dreary paranormal investigator which we've all come to know and love, these two like their job. From what I understand the idea for the couple originated while Rozum was writing Xombi, but due to the titles cancelation he never got to use it. It sat around and percolated and changed and evolved into what we'll see in the upcoming Vertigo series. For more info and preview images here are some links to Newsarama articles about The Filth and Fight For Tomorrow.. I couldn't find the newsarama article on Midnight Mass, but it does come out this week. The FilthFight For Tomorrow. | | Saturday, April 13th, 2002 | 10:36 pm [duffy61]

Vertigo. My opinions
My money situation, being what it is, prohibits me from indulging in any new titles, but, I continue with 100 Bullets and American Century. Azzarelo can do no wrong so far. I am searching for one more issue of Sandman Mystery Theater to complete the run. It is by far, my favorite series of the Vertigo line. Also Jonny Double back issues 2-4. The same team as 100 Bullets. Current Mood: awake | | Thursday, April 11th, 2002 | 10:11 pm [countessolivia]

Top Shelf Comix Needs Help!
I got this through Warren Ellis' mailing list BAD SIGNAL, and againt through Brian Wood's mailing list, and figured I'd post it here in case anyone hasn't seen it yet. It's all tied to LPC filing for bankruptecy.. **************************************************************** TOP SHELF IN TROUBLE WE NEED YOUR HELP Dear Comics Fans, We have just been informed this week that our book trade distributor has filed for bankrupcy (Chapter 11). They will continue to operate and hopefully recover and we will support this all we can (as our industry needs them, and they are good people) but unfortunately, this has happened at a time when they owed us an enormous sum of money (over $80,000.00 minus returns). And to make matters worse, the most recent check they cut us, for almost $20,000.00, bounced this week, in turn causing the last 30 checks we wrote to printers, conventions, cartoonists practically every aspect of the business to bounce (or be held) in turn. To put it bluntly, even with all the hard work we've put in over the years, if we don't raise $20,000 this month, it could realistically force us to suspend publishing operations for the foreseeable future. It's hard to believe but a big domino has fallen right on top of us at the worst time possible. So, that leaves us no choice but to be honest and ask for your help. If 400-500 of you can find it in your hearts to each spend around fifty bucks on our core list of books below, this would literally pull us through. We mean that. We've got such a strong future schedule, and so many cool things to announce soon (including two more Alan Moore projects and two Film & TV projects), that I'd hate to think that we'd have to pull the plug right before we were just about to arrive. In any event, if you can find it in your hearts to help us out, we will be eternally grateful. We'll be manning the phones personally on this "drive," and we'll also be sure to keep you informed -- hopefully letting all of you know in three-to-four weeks that everything's okay (with your help, that is). On behalf of Brett Warnock and myself. Truly, your friend thru comics, Chris Staros Top Shelf Productions PO Box 1282 Marietta, GA 30061-1282 USA (770) 425-0551 staros@bellsouth.net http://www.topshelfcomix.comhttp://www.topshelfcomix.com( Ordering info and the short list of booksCollapse ) | | Thursday, February 21st, 2002 | 1:12 pm [countessolivia]
