Doctor Who meta discussion

Metatardis - where we're all madmen in boxes!

Welcome to metatardis! This community exists as a space for discussion and meta relating to Doctor Who and its spin-offs.

Why does this comm exist?

Whilst squee posts, picspams, fanworks, spoilers, speculation and news are all fantastic things, sometimes it's nice to be able to settle in, put on your nerd specs and engage in a nice, meaty meta discussion. Whilst there are plenty of places where all those other things can be posted, however, there isn't yet an all-era-inclusive, spin-off friendly community just for meta. Hence, metatardis was created, for all your discussion and meta needs.

What do we allow here?

Metatardis is a space for the following types of posts:

  • Meta discussions about any aspect of any era of Doctor Who, from William Hartnell onwards;
  • Episode discussion posts for both Classic and New Doctor Who, as well as Torchwood, the Sarah Jane adventures and other spin-offs such as the Big Finish Audio adventures; and
  • Meta discussions about fandom, fannish politics and fanworks.

What don't we allow here?

  • Shipping discussions of any description. We welcome people of all ships, but we'd rather not have shipping discussion in the comm itself. There are plenty of other wonderful places for that.
  • Fanworks of any description, unless you are using one as a starting point for a discussion of your own. There are many other communities that allow various fanworks across all eras of Doctor Who and its spin-offs. Whilst we encourage discussion of fanworks here, the works themselves should be posted elsewhere.

Spoiler Policy

Not everyone lives in the UK, so not everyone can watch an episode the moment it comes out. Therefore, we ask that you place all episode spoilers under a cut until four weeks after the episode's UK release date.

Similarly, not everyone likes knowing casting spoilers and other speculation in advance, so if you reference any of these things in your post, please place them under a spoiler cut.

Please note: this community is not a place to post spoilers by themselves! Posts that do this will be locked down and their posters warned.

Community Rules (READ BEFORE POSTING):

An expanded version of these rules can be found at our FAQ post.

  1. No -isms. This is our biggest rule, and one of the main reasons why the comm was created. The modsquad will come down hard on anyone displaying sexist, racist, classist, ageist, ablist, homo/bi/transphobic or any other -ist behaviour.
  2. No shipping bias. This comm is shipping-free with the one exception of the weekly shipping rec post, and therefore hopefully shipwar-free. We encourage people who ship all sorts of things to join and post, but we would prefer that you left your shipping preferences at the door. If we see anything even vaguely resembling a shipwar, again, the modsquad will come down hard. Discussing a relationship, romantic or otherwise, between two characters may be deemed acceptable by the modsquad as long as there is no overt shipping bias in the discussion.
  3. Be polite. Disagreeing is fine; flaming is not. Your friendly modsquad are here if you feel like you need to learn the difference. Personal attacks will not be tolerated.
  4. Posts must be on-topic meta or discussion. Off-topic posts include squee posts, spoilers and speculation, actor discussions and news, picspams (unless, of course, you've decided to illustrate your meta), GIFspams and fanworks. While we love and appreciate all those things, this isn't the right comm for them.
  5. Character criticism is fine. Character-bashing is not. "I have an issue with [character] because of this aspect of their story arc," is good. "I hate this character because she's a stupid slut," will get you banned.
  6. This is a safe space. Respect people's privacy, their triggers and themselves. Threatening behaviour will get the modsquad descending upon you with the fiery wrath of half a dozen very pissed-off nerds. Holding clue bats.
  7. Please do not delete comments unless it is absolutely necessary. If you do not have a paid account and you wish to delete and repost to correct a typo or error, say this in the header of your new comment. If the mods catch you deleting your comments during a discussion (and we will catch it; we do get comment notifications, after all), you will be given a warning.

What happens if I break the rules?

Depending on the rule, the first time will get you a warning. Think of it as your one get-out-of-jail free card. The second will get your thread frozen if you're in the comments, or your post locked down otherwise. We will not delete posts or comments except in very exceptional circumstances, and we don't want you doing it either, but we may screen things if we deem it appropriate.

After you've had a thread frozen or a post locked down three times, you will be temporarily banned for a period to be decided by the modsquad. If you come back and re-offend, you'll be permabanned. Simple, right?

The mods may choose to bypass the three strike system if your offense is egregious enough. In such a case, or in the case of a dispute, a decision will be made by the complete modsquad to avoid any bias.

What should I do if I see someone else break the rules?

Let us know! While we do our best to be around as often as possible, the mods are only human and (amazingly) have lives outside the community. If you've seen someone else break the rules and nothing's been done about it, you can let us know here or by emailing the mods at metatardis [at] gmail [dot] com.

Meet the Modsquad!

bewarethespork - Kind, clever, funny, witty, charming, friendly and fun: these are all words the anon meme has not used to describe Jay in the past. Jay is a fourth year med student from North Queensland, Australia, whose introduction to Doctor Who came through perusing the latest posts at fandom_wank; she's been mad about the show ever since. When she's not busy rambling pretentiously about semiotics or telling people to ship Seven/Ace, you can find her obsessively refreshing her flist, shoe-shopping with her lovely fiancé, skillincarnate, or - of course - rewatching The Curse of Fenric for the umpteenth time.

distractogirl - DG is a 27 yr old Londoner who can squee with the best of them. Living as she does in the suburbs with her Dad she constantly bemoans the fact that she doesn't have enough time to watch all the Dr Who episodes she wants, although it's easier now they're being rerun on tv! She doesn't like fish custard, but is quite fond of jelly babies...

joanne_c - bio coming soon

persiflage_1 - I'm persiflage_1 and I'll be your Evil Oppressor! I watched Doctor Who all through from Four and Sarah Jane to Seven and Ace, but I was never a fan. Then S3 came along, and Dr Martha Jones stole my heart, and fandom was something I stumbled into. I love the Doctor (especially Three, Eight, Nine, Ten and Eleven), and many of his companions (Martha, Sarah Jane, Liz Shaw, River Song, Romana (both of her!), Mickey, Donna, the Brigadier, Benton, Amy, Rory, Benny, Charley and Lucie). I'm a multi-shipper, love the Sarah Jane Adventures, and am a bit of a Big Finish whore. (Eventually Jay WILL break and succumb to my oppression, and listen to them! :P) When I'm not rambling and raving about various aspects of the Whoniverse, I'm writing a futuristic police procedural/detective series of stories set in my own universe (that keeps expanding, darnit!)

metonomia - Metonomia (Meto) is a college student from the American Northwest, studying literature and history and chilling in fandom in between. She loves all the Doctors, companions, and supporting casts of New Who and of Torchwood, and is most interested in the current Who, though she looks forward to someday catching up on Classic Who as well.

penumbra - I'm Mary, a theoretical physics student residing in London, England. I have watched some 'classic' Who (mostly Five) and the majority of 'new' Who and I tend to favour the Steven Moffat era (so far). I love all spheres of art, particularly music, and I seem to spend a lot of time drawing thematic (or other) connections between things I like which are otherwise unrelated. I like everything to have a touch of saudade, and of whimsy, and of the fairy tale about it — and I will desperately and faithfully love all things this is true for.

lilly_rose -Lilly Rose is old enough to know better but still too young to care. Somewhere in the wild and wonderful state of West Virginia, she runs after small children by day and scribbles away by night. As far as Doctor Who goes, she prefers her Doctors odd numbered, her companions outspoken and Australian, and her Team TARDIS consisting of a trickster and his protégé/friend/insert other option here. In and out of fandom, her favorite things to get meta about include fairy tales and various psychological schools of thought. She looks forward to some good discussion on the comm-keeping it all civil, of course.

startron - I’m Startron, I’m 21 and I’m an unemployed bum who resides in the U of K. I first encountered Doctor Who in 2005 with the Ninth Doctor, then travelled back in time to the 1960’s to frolic amongst tinfoil and cardboard monsters with Patrick Troughton. I have a soft spot for Two, Six, Nine and Eleven. And yes, I like “The Twin Dilemma”. Does that make me the slightly odd one?

melengro - Nathan was born well after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and is likely to outlive her as well. He lists his role models in life as C.S. Lewis, Tanizaki Jun’ichirō, Lord Peter Wimsey, Ryōgi Shiki, the Fourth Doctor, and Vanessa from Madlax; thus, the general public would do well to avoid him. He lives in a distorted warpspace with the Blessed Julian of Norwich, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I, Spike Spiegel, Dr Quatermass, an amnesiac super-soldier cloned from Cosmo Lang and Mary Tamm, and a boxing kangaroo named Jude the Obscure. This statement is a lie.
