Låt oss titta in i hans rum.

Moving to Harvey Mudd
Hey guys,
I had a question for the members of the community. I'm from Cincinnati, OH and might be transferring to Harvey Mudd for an internship at Biostar West. I've lived in Cincinnati for practically my whole life, and really have no idea of how I'd be getting around over there. I guess I was wondering if anyone knew about any local cheap housing, affordable or otherwise decently priced apartment places or the like? Oh, also, given that I'm probably going to be driving up there, does anyone have any tips for me, or things I should get in order before I get there?

If I had a nickle for every stupid CMCer there is...

Has anybody read that?

Wrong turn to a LAN party, eh?

Well I'll tell you what, Mr. Evert, if you and your friends don't stop getting alcohol poisoning at our parties, then you may never see foamy, gyrating bodies ever again.

I'm a prospective student for the class of 2011, and I'm wondering a few things. Mainly about the engineering program - I've heard it's good, but I'm wondering what the curriculum is like. I have the impression many engineering schools / programs do a lot of math and physics early on and don't address actual design until later on. Is this the case with Harvey Mudd? Or ought I expect a more hands-on, design-centered curriculum?

edit: Also, do they have Japanese at Harvey Mudd? The other Claremont schools (and is it a pain or anything to try and take classes at the other schools)? I'd like to keep learning that.

Frosh Placement Forms
In the spirit of scaring next year's frosh....

http://www.hmc.edu/acad/acadaffairs/incoming.html

Pity the Hum 1 choices aren't out yet, but I found the Chip Workshop and Jazz Workshop apps interesting - they didn't have 1-unit advising workshops last year. Also, no CS60 frosh this year, unless they're particularly awesome.

And if you're going to be a frosh at Mudd next year, this is as good a place as any to say hello! *waves*

berkeley v. harvey mudd
Hi everyone,

I'm a prospective Mudder that visited the campus a few weeks ago and really, really, REALLY liked HMC...until she visited Berkeley, and found out that she really, really, REALLY likes it there too.

I was wondering if any of you were in that Cal v. Mudd position, back in the day...and if you could offer any input, that would be most appreciated.

I've started a (rather incomplete) pro/con list here, if that would help. I think my biggest concern is that HMC is so close to home (about 35 minutes away), and I wouldn't really have a big change in environment--whereas at Berkeley, it's just so radically difficult and far from home that I know (or at least, I think) I'll be grow/mature exponentially. But then, I suppose there's no real reason I wouldn't mature like that at HMC. And then I think, what do even I know because I really don't know anything about anything and my head hurts so I have to turn to lj!

So yes. Thanks in advance for any help :)

Edit (4/29/6): Hi everyone. I just want to thank you all for taking out time from your busy schedules to leave such long comments; they all helped TREMENDOUSLY. I ended up visiting Mudd's campus again yesterday, to see if I could clarify how I felt...and that's where I've decided to go. I had lunch with Professor Bassman, talked to Professor Saeta again (I met him at the prefrosh weekend), and talked to more Mudders (whose constant willingness to help always amazes me). I just feel comfortable there, and I think it would be better for me to be in a small environment, even though it's not the world. And I shall certainly be considering Cal for grad school :) Thanks again for all your help--and perhaps I will be seeing some of you next year!

Are you a tenor?
Or do you know someone who is? Spread the word!
The Claremont Concert Choir is in dire need of tenors. We rehearse at Scripps, 4:15-5:45, Mondays in Balch Auditorium and Wednesdays in Boone Recital Hall. This is a fun class, and we're singing some awesome pieces this semester (including Palestrina!). Please join us! Contact our director, Professor Chuck Kamm: ckamm@scrippscollege.edu. Auditions are not scary! You can get 1.0 hum credit if you register by this Monday, the 30th (the add deadline).

Anyone know how I can get ahold of Dan Gianotti? Someone just reminded me of the Peekaboo story and that's a must have for this project.

Laptops
Any thoughts on the contrast between dell, toshiba, thinkpad, and vaio laptops. I'm curious about the various service plans, hardware reliability, and general operation.

Thanks.

drama auditions!
the Etc. Players are holding auditions for three one-act plays to be performed during the first weekend of November (i think--we haven't yet reserved a space)
come try out tomorrow (Thursday) night sometime between 7:30 and 9:30 in Jacobs B132 (go in through Galileo Hall, and there will be signs to point you in the right direction)

Samuel Becket: Act Without Words I
David Ives: Universal Language
Neil Simon: California Suite: The Visitor from New York

these are just one-acts, so this would not be a huge time commitment!
no experience necessary!
you don't have to prepare anything--just come and read for us
it'll be great, guys

I’ve been playing around with the idea of doing a collection of radio-styled (think This American Life), stories from Mudd and I’m looking for ideas. Anybody have stories they tell to non-mudders that leave them rolling on the floor laughing wishing they had gone to Mudd? Or, on the other hand stories of the academic side of Mudd that leave them in shocked silence wondering how it is that a school like that still gets applicants after 50 years of abusing students?

A couple of my current ideas:

-Stealing the cannon from Caltech.
-Various other pranks, either as a montage or as separate stories.
-The LA bomb squad showing up at West dorm graduation weekend ’03.
-ASHMC funding PornSHMC.
-Choosing the school colors.

I'm not sure yet what the final product will be. It might be used in some fashion for the 50th celebrations, but I'm having trouble getting info about what exactly is going to be happening for those.

Any ideas, leave a comment or email me at Jessica{dot}Spaulding{at}kcrw{dot}com.

why should frosh have all the fun?
Since the deadline for frosh to turn these forms in has passed, it can't hurt for us post-frosh to have a bit of fun with em, eh? Answer as many as you can as entertainingly as possible. Froshies, feel free to share your answers or make up new ones.

1. Construct two (nifty) sentences using some of the following words:
Tangy-n-delicious, saddle shoes, mirror warmer, passion pit, wuckadoo, homeomorphic, hand jive, node, pulchritudinous, the Reds, royal shaft, non-destructive frequency characteristic analysis, “Shoot low, they’re riding Shetlands,” seppuku, muff, masticate, biff, Goicochea, “Penguin!”
2. If your life was a breakfast cereal what would it be called and why?
3. What do you wear underneath your poodle skirt / tight jeans and why? (boxers, briefs, thong, commando, etc…)
4. What is a Velji Bear’s only weakness?
5. If you could have a jumpin’ 50’s hangout place named after your life, what would it be called and why?
6. Describe the first time you _________ and were horribly embarrassed.
(Fill in the blank, and answer the question.)
7. Why did you never make it to the sock hop in 11th grade?
8. Name three items you’d take with you into the passion pit, and why?
9. Describe (briefly) your plan to remove Sputnik from orbit.

1. “Shoot low, they’re riding Shetlands,” warns the Tangy-n-delicious Goicochea. After donning his saddle shoes and performing a good-luck hand jive, he dives into the passion pit towards certain non-destructive frequency characteristic analysis.

...I hope lots of people used Goicochea.
