I am taking Ecology and Evolution at college and we are doing sociobiology right now. Mole rats are the only eusocial mamals and the reason they put up with letting the queen be the only one that breeds is that they are so closely related they have identical genetic fingerprints. So if a mole rat helps the another rat from the same colony survive, even at the expense of its own life, it is helping it's genes survive. I just thought that was cool.

Does anyone know the conservation status of Naked Mole Rats? I mean, I know they have a restricted habitat, but they seem pretty prolific. Would it actually be possible to own pet naked mole rats? It should be, if it isn't...

Hi everybody! Great community!

I saw the naked mole rats for the 1st time at the Metro Toronto Zoo and fell in love with the little critters since. So blind and cute, it broke my heart when they would run into eachother and sleep all piled up.

I used to have a couple key chains of naked mole rats and no they're gone. Too bad.

I meant to point this out some time ago, butI forgot: it seems there is a cartoon on Nickelodeon that features a naked mole rat. It is called Kim Possible I believe. I've only seen a few seconds of it, but there was definitely a naked mole rat.

I think the President should adopt a colony of Naked Mole Rats. He could be given a pet pregnant Queen Mole Rat by a small child and then he could install it in a colony in the Oval Office, tastefully built into a cabinet. And he could look at the mole rats and get all sorts of strategic and communitarian ideas and announce them in the State of the Union speeches. And he could be photographed getting off his helicopter with an adorable Mole Rat in his pocket.

I wonder what he would name his Mole Rats...
