newsies icon contest

newsies icon contest

The Original Newsies Icon Contest

newsiesicontest is a weekly contest for icons with the movie Newsies as the subject. Anyone with a LiveJournal is welcome to post an entry and/or vote on the entries. If you have any questions, just post a comment on the last post in the community. All comments are automatically screened.

Suggestions for challenges are always appreciated! Sometimes it's hard to find a good song/picture/theme, so if you ever have an idea, you can post it as a comment to the last entry.

Entering Icons

* All icon challenges have guidelines outlined in the post and all icons must adhere to those guidelines

* All icons must meet LiveJournal standards (> 40kb and 100 px X 100 px or less)

* Late icons will not be accepted.

* All icons must remain anonymous until the winners are announced. This means that you may not post your icon anywhere, including entering it in other icon contests. All icons will be uploaded to the same Photobucket account in order to keep anonymity. Additionally, icons with your name, username or anything that might give away who you are in the filename will be renamed.

* All icons must be entered by replying to the post where the challenge is. Your comment only needs to have the image itself posted. If you don't know how to do this copy the code below and paste into the comment:

Voting

* All voting is done through polls

* Votes are weighted, so voting for your most favorite to least favorite is important

* You must vote on all 3 questions and you may not vote more than once. It just won't work due to how LJ polls work.

* You may not vote for yourself.

* Late votes will not count.

* Do not vote for your friend's icon if you just know which one is theirs (either by them telling you or otherwise). Cheating is never cool and if I catch someone at they'll be banned from the community.

Is animation, tiny text or blends allowed?
Tiny text is always allowed, but for lyric challenges, at least some of the lyric should be readable. Animation and blends are allowed, but for cap challenges, you must use only the cap.

Sorry this is a little late. Anyway, time for the next challenge, which is a lyrical one.

This is a lyrical challenge. I'm just going to link two songs and you can chose any five (or more) consecutive words to use in your icon from either song (I couldn't choose!). The first song is Three Imaginary Boys by The Cure and the second song is A Night Like This by The Cure.

The Rules:
* You have until Sunday night 11:59 PM MST/PDT to enter.
* You must include the image itself (img src tag) and the url to the image (a href tag).
* Your icon must be within LJ size limits (100 x 100 and less than 40 Kb)
* You may enter by replying to this post only.
* You may enter only one icon.
* You may not enter anonymously - only those with LiveJournal accounts are allowed to enter and you must use that account to enter so that I know who to award any possible (virtual) prizes to and so I know that you're not entering more than once.
* Any questions can be asked here, but please ask it outside your entry.
* Here's an example of what your entry should look like (click)
Good luck!

Also, voting will be posted for last week's challenge later tonight. If you're having problems voting using the poll thingy, then please comment to the entry with your favorite icons numbers (in order of most to least favorite).

Lastly, the layout that

birdythenerdy made for the contest a few weeks ago is finally up and running in full! Go check it out and if you have questions to add to the FAQ, please post them here, too. Thanks!

As I am exhausted tonight, I will post the winners for the last challenge tomorrow morning.

Also, as there ended up only being one entry in the layout contest, the winner is

birdythenerdy! Congrats (and I will have your banner and $5 gc posted/sent tomorrow at some point as well). And of course, I will get the new layout up asap.

Thanks!

* You have until Sunday night 11:59 PM MST/PDT to enter.
* You must include the image itself (img src tag) and the url to the image (a href tag).

By request, the layout contest deadline has been moved to Monday night at 11:59 PDT. If anyone needs even more time than that, let me know and I'll accomodate you (within reason of course).

Also, don't forget - you have a little over 48 hours to get in your icons for this weeks challenge!

The next challenge ends Sunday night, for your reference, and there haven't been any entries yet.

Also, the layout contest ends Sunday night and I don't plan on making any extensions unless someone requests it. There's one entry so far.

Now for the next challenge, which is a lyrical one.

Like the last lyrical challenge I posted, I'm just going to link to a song and you can chose any five (or more) consecutive words to use in your icon. The song is Collide by Howie Day.

The Rules:
* You have until Sunday night 11:59 PM MST/PDT to enter.
* You must include the image itself (img src tag) and the url to the image (a href tag).
* Your icon must be within LJ size limits (100 x 100 and less than 40 Kb)

Also, don't forget about the layout contest here. Entries are also due Sunday night and there's a real prize! So far there's just one entry.

Ok. Seeing as how there's only ONE entry, this contest will have to be extended until Sunday at least. PLEASE get your entries in ASAP and if you haven't made it yet, well...what are you waiting for?! ;)

Layout contest info

[15 Aug 2005|12:15pm]

I'd like a new header/layout for this community, so I've decided to hold a contest. Please read all of the following info

RULES
1) Your layout must be at least a 2 column layout - a main part for the journal and a side bar (like this) or it can have 2 side bars like this. It also must have a header image. So please take the side bar(s) into account when making a header image.

2) You do not need to code the layout.

3) It must include at least one divider image to go between entries. Here's an example.

4) It must use some sort of background image, for example. This image must be at least 1600 pixels long (wide). It only has to be a few pixels high, though, depending on if you have a pattern that needs to repeat, etc.

5) It must include at least one matching icon that, of course, meets LJ restrictions.

6) Obviously, it must feature images from Newsies.

7) It must include links somewhere on the image(s). You don't need to code an image map, but at least have the appropriate writing in the appropriate place. Links I would like are: calendar, user info, and memories. You don't need to use those exact words, however.

8) It must also include mini header images for the side bar. Basically, this will just be text on a background that matches or complements the side bar background. The headings I would like are: About, FAQs, Affiliates, Rules, Archives. Here's an example, just in case. Also, you must use those exact words, unlike for the links.

9) Please submit using of the two following formats.

a) If you have a place to upload zip files to, please use this method! Put all of your images in the zip file (there must be at a header, background, icon and the five side bar headers) included. Reply to this post (comments are screened as always) and post your link to the zip file. Please use zip files only, not rars or anything else!

b) If you don't have space to upload zip files to, please just use your regular photohosting space. Please copy and paste the text below, reply to this post, paste the form into the comment area, fill out the form and then submit it.

Header image: Image: <img src="URL TO YOUR IMAGE" /> Image URL: http://URL TO YOUR IMAGE HERE Background image: Image: <img src="URL TO YOUR IMAGE" /> Image URL: http://URL TO YOUR IMAGE HERE Icon: Image: <img src="URL TO YOUR IMAGE" /> Image URL: http://URL TO YOUR IMAGE HERE About header image: Image: <img src="URL TO YOUR IMAGE" /> Image URL: http://URL TO YOUR IMAGE HERE FAQs header image: Image: <img src="URL TO YOUR IMAGE" /> Image URL: http://URL TO YOUR IMAGE HERE Affiliates header image: Image: <img src="URL TO YOUR IMAGE" /> Image URL: http://URL TO YOUR IMAGE HERE Rules header image: Image: <img src="URL TO YOUR IMAGE" /> Image URL: http://URL TO YOUR IMAGE HERE Archives header image: Image: <img src="URL TO YOUR IMAGE" /> Image URL: http://URL TO YOUR IMAGE HERE

If you chose to make additional images, please also post them using the same format as for the other images.

10) Because this is so involved I'm setting the deadline to almost two weeks from now. Entries will be due Sunday August 28th at 11:59 PDT.

11) Please, as for all other contests, do not post your images anywhere until after the winner is announced. I'd like to keep the anonymity of this contest same as all the others. Also, no anonymous entries are allowed as usual. The layouts will be voted on just like a regular contest.

12) Lastly, please ask any questions here, outside of your entry.

Prizes
Prizes for this contest are, I admit not going to be proportional to the amount of work it'll likely take you. That said, everyone who particpates will get a big, fancy banner.

Also, the winner of the contest will receive a $5 Livejournal Gift Certificate to use towards a paid account, extra user pics (which are now up to 100 instead of 50), or whatever you'd like. I know it's not much, but I hope the contest will still be fun and perhaps a learning experience for those who don't make layouts.

Guidelines
If you have never made a layout before, or haven't done it very often, I suggest looking around at other header images and such to get inspired. A good place to find nice layouts is

freelayouts. Of course, use your own creativity, but if you have no idea where to begin, I would suggest there.

Feel free to go above and beyond the minimum requirements! If you want to make extra images for anything (i.e. dates, comments, etc) you certainly may.

Lastly, have fun!

I'm sure I've forgotten some things, or someone will have questions that need answering, so keep an eye out for updates and addendums. Thanks!
