History of Socially Engaged Science Fiction: Part 1 - What Is the History of Socially Engaged Science Fiction?

■ Overview

The history of socially engaged science fiction traces how human societies have reexamined freedom, justice, domination, and conceptions of the human through changes in science, technology, and social structure.

Science fiction, as the term is used here, is not limited to a form of entertainment that imagines future technologies.

Taking machines, the life sciences, cities, states, information, the environment, labor, war, the body, memory, consciousness, artificial intelligence, and other subjects as points of departure, it is a literary and intellectual form that asks, “How do human beings and social institutions change when the conditions of society change?” This study focuses on such socially engaged and philosophical science fiction.

It therefore does not center on interstellar wars, galactic empires, alien species, faster-than-light travel, and adventures in the far reaches of the future.

It centers on how technology transforms social order, how freedom is constrained, within what frameworks justice is distributed, how domination becomes less visible, and what it means to be human.

Science fiction set primarily in space, including space opera, has a distinct lineage. Because its narrative center of gravity differs and it is extremely difficult to treat the two together without conflating them, it is not covered here. It will be addressed in a separate study, “A History of Space Opera.”

Put differently, precisely because I respect both as major currents within science fiction, I believe they need to be treated separately.

Settings beyond Earth are included, however, when their themes lie in resource distribution, governance, bodily transformation, labor, colonization, or environmental ethics, as in stories of Martian settlement, lunar societies, orbital cities, and space-development policy.

The criterion is not the scale of the setting, but whether a work questions social institutions and conceptions of the human. This history is not a linear history of progress.

Although early utopian literature took shape before modern science, it possessed the power to imagine alternative social institutions.

Even as scientific romance in the age of the Industrial Revolution expressed hopes for machines and life, it brought the responsibility of creators and anxieties about the body into view.

Twentieth-century dystopias exposed structures through which states and bureaucracies deprived people of freedom, while the Cold War period brought nuclear weapons, systems of social control, psychology, space development, and information warfare to the center of concern.

After the New Wave, the focus expanded further to consciousness, language, gender, colonialism, and the environment; after cyberpunk, information capitalism, body modification, network domination, and corporate power moved to the foreground.

Today, AI, climate change, surveillance, platforms, and the posthuman have become major concerns.

The history of socially engaged science fiction is therefore not a history of trends in imagining the future. It is an intellectual and cultural history that examines how societies have reconsidered their own freedom, justice, domination, and conceptions of the human through science and technology.

■ 1. Periodization in the History of Socially Engaged Science Fiction

The periodization of socially engaged science fiction is based not on authors or media, but on the kinds of social questions toward which technologically informed imagination has turned. This study adopts ten periods, from the Prehistory of Imagined Societies Period to the AI-Era Reconfiguration of Conceptions of the Human Period.

First, the Prehistory of Imagined Societies Period. At this stage, science fiction had not yet become established as an independent genre. Utopias, satirical travel narratives, theories of the ideal state, tales of unfamiliar lands, mechanical imaginings, and alchemical conceptions of life presented social institutions and conceptions of the human different from those of reality. Modern experimental science had not yet stabilized, but the science-fictional structure of “criticizing reality by positing different social conditions” took shape here.

Second, the Industrial Scientific Romance Period. From the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth century, the Industrial Revolution, the steam engine, electricity, anatomy, chemistry, evolutionary theory, and urbanization transformed the imagination. Artificial life, inventors, exploration, subterranean and undersea worlds, future cities, and machine civilization were depicted, while science and technology appeared as sources both of wonder and of transgression. During this period, science fiction moved closer to a form that rendered not only the possibilities of technology but also responsibility for it in narrative form.

Third, the Future-Society Critique Period. From the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, visions of future societies addressed capitalism, imperialism, class, labor, cities, war, and gender roles. Utopia and dystopia diverged, and science fiction became more than stories of invention: it became a thought experiment in alternative arrangements of social institutions. At this stage, machine civilization exposed not only convenience, but also labor alienation, social stratification, and collective control.

Fourth, the Emergence of Dystopia Period. In the first half of the twentieth century, totalitarianism, bureaucracy, mass propaganda, eugenics, war, surveillance, planned economies, and the management of consumption became major themes. The future was constructed less as bright progress than as the possibility that freedom might be structurally taken away. Technology appeared not as an isolated cause, but as a device of domination connected to the state, media, education, language, and psychological manipulation.

Fifth, the Cold War Technology and Ethics Period. From the end of the Second World War through the 1960s, nuclear weapons, space development, computers, cybernetics, Cold War systems of social control, radiation, and the military-industrial complex became central concerns. What moved to the foreground was not expansion in the mode of space opera, but human extinction, technocracy, rationalized violence, and the responsibility of scientists. Science fiction in the nuclear age sharply examined the limits of human judgment and institutional frameworks.

Sixth, the Inward Turn Period. During the 1960s and 1970s, New Wave science fiction, psychological science fiction, science fiction concerned with language and gender, drug culture, media criticism, and critiques of psychiatry came to the fore. Consciousness, memory, sexuality, language, the body, perception, and social roles became more important than outer space. Alongside the external apparatus of science and technology, science fiction began to address the ways the subject itself is constituted by norms and language.

Seventh, the Domination by Information Capital Period. Centered on the years from the 1980s through the 2000s, but continuing to resonate and expand into the early 2010s, this period made cyberpunk, corporate states, networks, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, body modification, urban underclasses, surveillance, and data domination central concerns. Agents of domination expanded beyond the state to include corporations, media, and information networks. Freedom was portrayed less as a matter of physical movement than as one of data, body, identity, and access rights.

Eighth, the Reconfiguration of Plural Conceptions of Justice Period. Precursors appeared from the mid-1980s onward, and from the 1990s through the 2010s, gender, race, colonialism, disability, care, migration, the environment, memory, community, and non-Western visions of the future entered the center of science fiction. Moving beyond the framework of a single history of technological progress, science fiction became a form that asks whose futures are told and who has been excluded. The scope of justice consequently expanded beyond the framework of the state to include the body, language, history, land, environment, and cultural recognition.

Ninth, the Climate and Planetary Crisis Period. Since the 2000s, climate change, resource depletion, pandemics, food, water, urban disasters, refugees, and environmental collapse have become important themes. The future has changed from a stage for technological expansion into a site for asking who will survive, and who will be sacrificed, within a devastated global environment. Freedom and justice are treated here not only as matters of individual rights, but also as questions of intergenerational responsibility, interspecies relations, and environmental distribution.

Tenth, the AI-Era Reconfiguration of Conceptions of the Human Period. Since the 2010s, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robots, synthetic media, brain–machine interfaces, data-based personalities, and platform governance have become central concerns. Since the 2020s, generative AI and synthetic media in particular have constituted a subphase marked by their social prominence. Questions concerning the boundary between human and machine, creativity, labor, emotion, responsibility, memory, and personal identity are all being reexamined. Science fiction has moved beyond the question of whether AI resembles human beings and entered a stage that asks how, through AI, human societies determine what counts as human and which judgments they delegate to machines.

■ 2. Five Perspectives on the History of Socially Engaged Science Fiction

This study establishes technology, freedom, justice, domination, and conceptions of the human as five axes for analyzing socially engaged and philosophical science fiction from multiple perspectives.

First, technology. Technology in science fiction is more than a mere prop. Machines, the life sciences, cities, communications, AI, drugs, memory manipulation, environmental control, surveillance devices, and simulations function as conditions that transform social relations. What matters here is not only “what was invented,” but how a technology changes labor, the body, ownership, perception, and governance.

Second, freedom. The conditions of freedom lie at the heart of socially engaged and philosophical science fiction. Movement, thought, the body, reproduction, memory, access to information, the ability to disconnect from machines, and freedom from surveillance are reexamined within the technological conditions of each period. Freedom does not exist naturally; social structures, bodies, technology, and information environments can make it either possible or impossible.

Third, justice. Science fiction asks who receives resources, who is sacrificed, who is recognized as a citizen, and who is treated as less than human. Class, gender, race, colonization, disability, AI, clones, animals, future generations, and the environment have all become objects of justice. Justice is an axis not only for criticizing forms of domination deemed unjust, but also for examining what frameworks might make alternative distributions possible.

Fourth, domination. Science fiction has addressed how domination operates not only through violence, but also through information, language, memory, education, medicine, entertainment, urban design, algorithms, and the formation of desire. This axis examines how dictatorships, corporations, bureaucracies, platforms, AI, experts, colonial powers, and forms of family life constrain people’s choices.

Fifth, conceptions of the human. Science fiction’s ultimate question is what it means to be human. Artificial life, robots, androids, mutants, clones, cyborgs, people with altered memories, virtual personalities, AI, and bodies adapted to their environments all destabilize the boundaries of the human. This axis examines whether intelligence, emotion, body, memory, death, responsibility, or relationality is taken to define the human.

■ Conclusion

Organizing the history of socially engaged science fiction is more than the task of placing imagined futures on a timeline. It is the task of examining how societies have used science and technology to think about their own freedom, justice, domination, and conceptions of the human.

Through the five axes of technology, freedom, justice, domination, and conceptions of the human, this study offers a general historical framework for comparing how science fiction has developed social philosophy, the ethics of technology, critiques of information society, and the ontology of the human in narrative form.
